Microsoft released Windows 11 26H1 Insider Preview builds 28120.3151 and 28020.3142 on 2 October 2026. Build 28120.3151 is for the Experimental channel; build 28020.3142 is for Beta. Both add a Cloud rebuild recovery option and fix a display delay affecting file and folder names changed only by letter case.
What changed in builds 28120.3151 and 28020.3142?
The release notes for both builds list two changes: Cloud rebuild in Windows Recovery Environment and a fix for case-only file and folder renames. Microsoft’s exact-build notes identify 28120.3151 as Experimental (26H1) and 28020.3142 as Beta (26H1). Microsoft’s Windows Insider release notes provide the build details.

Cloud rebuild can reinstall Windows through Windows Update
Cloud rebuild is a recovery option in Windows Recovery Environment. It downloads Windows installation files through Windows Update to restore the PC to a clean state. Microsoft says the workflow can perform a full reinstall even when Windows will not boot. The notes describe an operating-system recovery option; they do not say that a physical recovery drive is required.

Case-only renames now appear correctly in folder views
The builds fix an issue in which changing only the capitalization of a file or folder name did not immediately update the name shown in local or cloud folder views. For example, a rename that changes “report” to “Report” should now be reflected correctly.

How Beta 26H1 and Experimental 26H1 differ
Microsoft positions Beta as the comparatively steadier preview channel for features closer to release. Experimental is for earlier ideas and features still in active development; its features can change, be removed, or never ship. Choose based on your tolerance for preview bugs and how early you want to see developing features, not on the build number as a quality rating. Microsoft’s channel announcement describes the distinction and the separate build trains.
| Consideration | Beta (26H1) | Experimental (26H1) |
|---|---|---|
| Build in this release | 28020.3142 | 28120.3151 |
| Build series | 28000 series | 28100 series |
| Stability and feature timing | Comparatively steadier preview; features are closer to release | Earlier features in active development |
| Feature certainty | Preview features can still change | Features may change, be removed, or never ship |
| Best fit | Insiders who prefer a more stable preview and can tolerate preview bugs | Insiders willing to accept more change and bugs to see earlier ideas |
The channel series reflect separate development trains. Microsoft introduced the 28100 series for Experimental and the 28000 series for Beta in its 8 June 2026 announcement.

Can you switch between the channels without reinstalling Windows?
Yes. Microsoft says an Insider can switch between Experimental (26H1) and Beta (26H1) as an in-place upgrade, without a clean Windows reinstall. To change channels, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and select the available channel option. Check the options shown for your device before confirming the change.
Who should consider Windows 11 26H1?
Microsoft describes Windows 11 26H1 as a targeted release for specific silicon launching in 2026 and explicitly names devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series processors. That is not a blanket statement that every Windows 11 PC is eligible. Verify your device’s eligibility before selecting the 26H1 milestone. Microsoft generally recommends leaving the default Windows core selected in Advanced options unless you specifically need 26H1; details are in its 8 June 2026 channel announcement.

- Choose Experimental if you want earlier feature work and accept that it may change or be removed.
- Check hardware eligibility before opting into 26H1, particularly if your device is not a Snapdragon X2 system.
- As Insider preview builds, neither channel should be treated as a guarantee of a finished, production-ready Windows release.
