Windows 11 23H2 vs. 24H2: What Changes When You Upgrade?

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 24H2 is a full feature-update installation, not a small enablement switch. It carries forward many improvements that Microsoft already delivered to fully patched 23H2 systems, adds a new checkpoint cumulative-update model, changes default SMB security, and introduces AI features that only work on Copilot+ PCs or other hardware with a compatible neural-processing unit (NPU). Whether you should install it depends on your edition, hardware, applications, file servers and the support deadline for your current release.

As of October 13, 2026, 23H2 Home and Pro are already beyond their published servicing date. Enterprise and Education editions are scheduled to stop receiving updates on November 10, 2026. Staying on 23H2 can therefore be a short-term compatibility decision, not a sensible long-term plan.

23H2 and 24H2 at a glance

Question Windows 11 23H2 Windows 11 24H2
What is the upgrade? The earlier Windows 11 feature release, maintained through monthly cumulative updates. A feature release that includes earlier 23H2 fixes and features, plus additional changes. Microsoft says it is a full OS swap, not an enablement package.
Can an updated 23H2 PC already have some 24H2-listed features? Yes. Microsoft introduced some improvements through 23H2 monthly servicing before incorporating them into the 24H2 release. Yes. Installing 24H2 does not mean every item in its feature article is newly visible on a fully patched 23H2 machine.
Servicing model Traditional cumulative-update baselines. Checkpoint cumulative updates can use a previous cumulative update as a file-level baseline.
SMB signing Not the 24H2 default across all editions. Required by default for Home, Pro, Education and Enterprise.
AI features Availability depends on the individual feature and hardware. Several headline features are exclusive to Copilot+ PCs; installation alone does not add the required NPU.
23H2 Home/Pro support on October 13, 2026 Ended November 11, 2025. Moving to a supported release is necessary; 24H2 may not be the only current destination.

Microsoft’s technical inventory and upgrade prerequisites are documented in its Windows 11, version 24H2 feature documentation. Release-health pages are live, so check the relevant page immediately before a broad rollout.

What actually changes during the move

It is a feature update with a complete operating-system swap

Microsoft describes 24H2 as a feature update that includes features and fixes previously delivered through 23H2 cumulative updates. The wording matters: comparing a fully updated 23H2 installation with 24H2 is not the same as comparing launch-day 23H2 with launch-day 24H2. Monthly servicing may already have delivered part of what appears in the 24H2 feature list.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

The upgrade itself is still a full operating-system swap. Microsoft explicitly states that “Windows 11, version 24H2 is a full OS swap so it isn’t available as an enablement package.” The documented path requires Windows 11 23H2 or 22H2 with the May 2024 nonsecurity preview update, or a later update, installed. Windows Update can offer the feature update when the device is eligible; organizations can also use Windows Update client policies, WSUS, Configuration Manager or the Volume Licensing Service Center.

Some changes arrived through continuous innovation

Microsoft has used monthly updates to introduce improvements between annual releases. Consequently, a feature can be documented as part of 24H2 while being familiar to an up-to-date 23H2 user. Do not treat the release notes as a promise that every listed item will appear for the first time on upgrade day.

Microsoft also says there are no features under temporary enterprise control between 23H2 and 24H2. That removes one common deployment variable, but it does not remove application, driver, policy or hardware compatibility testing.

Checkpoint cumulative updates: what is different

Traditional cumulative-update packages used the original release as their baseline, which could make packages grow as more files changed. In 24H2, a checkpoint cumulative update can use a prior cumulative update as the baseline and deliver file-level differences from that checkpoint. Microsoft says this can reduce package size and make later downloads and installations faster.

  • A device may need a prerequisite cumulative update before it can install the latest package.
  • The model affects monthly servicing after the device is on 24H2; it is not a guarantee that the initial 23H2-to-24H2 feature upgrade will be faster.
  • Management tools and deployment rings should account for prerequisite checkpoints when approving or caching updates.

For a home user, the visible effect is usually a smaller or quicker later monthly update rather than a new control panel. For an administrator, update baselines, peer caching and maintenance windows should be reviewed against the checkpoint behavior.

AI features: 24H2 does not make every PC a Copilot+ PC

Several of the most publicized 24H2 features are hardware-gated. Microsoft’s feature documentation lists Copilot+ PCs as devices with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). These figures are Microsoft’s published feature requirements, not independent performance benchmarks.

Feature Eligibility described by Microsoft What installing 24H2 does not do
Live Captions translation Copilot+ PCs can translate speech from 44 languages into English subtitles. It does not add the required NPU to an ordinary Windows 11 computer.
Paint Cocreator Listed as a Copilot+ PC feature. It is not automatically available on every 24H2 installation.
Auto Super Resolution Listed as a Copilot+ PC feature. Installing the release does not guarantee support for every GPU, game or display configuration.
Photos Image Creator and Restyle Image Listed as Copilot+ PC features. They remain subject to the device class and feature availability, not just the Windows version.
Windows Studio Effects Available on Copilot+ PCs and selected Windows 11 devices with compatible NPUs. A 24H2 upgrade alone does not establish compatibility.

If an AI feature is your reason for upgrading, first identify the computer’s NPU capability and confirm that Microsoft lists the feature for that hardware. A standard 24H2 desktop or laptop receives the operating-system changes but not the Copilot+ hardware class.

SMB security and file-sharing behavior

24H2 makes a material change for systems that use Server Message Block (SMB) file sharing. SMB signing is required by default in Home, Pro, Education and Enterprise editions. Signing helps protect the integrity of SMB traffic, but it can expose old NAS appliances, legacy servers or third-party clients that never supported signing correctly.

24H2 capability or default Deployment implication
SMB signing required by default Test every file server, NAS device, scanner, backup target and embedded client used by the organization or household.
Outbound SMB encryption controls Administrators can require encryption for outbound client connections where the server supports it.
Signing and encryption auditing Use auditing to identify incompatible connections before enforcing stricter policy.
Outbound NTLM blocking for SMB, with exceptions Legacy authentication dependencies need an explicit remediation or documented exception.
SMB dialect management Older devices may need a supported dialect or replacement rather than a relaxed global policy.
Alternative SMB ports Use only when the server supports the configured port and firewalls are updated consistently.
SMB over QUIC client access and firewall behavior Remote-access designs need matching server, client and firewall configuration.

These controls can improve security, but they also change the assumptions made by older equipment. Before upgrading a business fleet, inventory SMB dependencies, test representative shares with signing and encryption enabled, and record which devices require remediation. For a personal PC, the same check matters if it connects to an older home server or NAS.

Support deadlines change the decision

Microsoft’s 23H2 release-health page states that Home and Pro reached end of updates on November 11, 2025. As of October 13, 2026, those editions are therefore outside their published servicing period. Enterprise and Education editions are scheduled to reach end of updates on November 10, 2026. The edition-specific dates are documented at Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 23H2 known-issues page.

That does not prove that 24H2 is the only or newest supported choice. Microsoft’s 24H2 release-health snapshot dated March 27, 2026 reported that 25H2 was the latest available version and described automatic 25H2 updates for certain unmanaged Home and Pro devices. Because that snapshot predates October 13, 2026, use the live release-health information before deciding between 24H2 and a later supported release.

Your situation Practical decision
Home or Pro still on 23H2 Plan an immediate move to a currently supported release. Remaining on 23H2 should be treated as temporary exception handling.
Enterprise or Education on 23H2 Complete compatibility work before November 10, 2026 and schedule a supported-version migration.
Fully patched 23H2 with a critical legacy application Test the application on 24H2 or the currently offered later release, document any safeguard hold, and avoid an unsupported indefinite delay.
Copilot+ hardware owner Choose the supported release that exposes the desired hardware features after confirming Microsoft’s eligibility requirements.
Older PC without a qualifying NPU Upgrade for support, security and operating-system changes, not for Copilot+ exclusives.

Check your edition, build and hardware first

  1. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version and OS build.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install all offered quality updates. Restart when requested, then check again.
  3. Confirm that the device is running 23H2 or 22H2 with the May 2024 nonsecurity preview update or a later update, which is part of Microsoft’s documented prerequisite path.
  4. Review storage capacity, device encryption or BitLocker recovery access, and current backups before starting a feature update.
  5. List software that touches audio decoding, VPNs, security, storage, virtualization, printers and file shares. These categories are more likely to expose compatibility problems than ordinary desktop applications.
  6. If AI features matter, identify whether the computer has a compatible NPU and whether its capability exceeds Microsoft’s more-than-40-TOPS Copilot+ threshold.
  7. If the computer accesses SMB shares, record the server model, SMB dialect, signing and encryption settings, and any applications that open files directly from those shares.

How to upgrade a personal PC through Windows Update

  1. Make a current backup of documents and verify that you can restore at least one file. Keep the device connected to reliable power.
  2. Go to Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates. Reboot and return to the same page.
  3. When Windows offers the feature update, read the release and restart information, then choose Download and install. If no offer appears, the device may have a safeguard hold, unmet prerequisite, policy restriction or hardware incompatibility.
  4. Allow the installation to complete without powering off the computer. Several restarts are normal for a full OS swap.
  5. After sign-in, open Settings > System > About and verify the version. Then run Windows Update again so the new release receives its latest cumulative update and any prerequisite checkpoint package.
  6. Test the functions you rely on: sign in, print, connect to VPN, open business applications, play audio and video, access network shares, and wake the computer from sleep.
  7. If a required application fails, capture its version, the Windows build and the exact error before changing policies or uninstalling updates.

Do not force an installation simply because a guide says the feature update exists. Microsoft can place a safeguard hold when a known compatibility issue affects a device; removing that protection without resolving the underlying issue can create a more difficult recovery.

Deployment guidance for managed devices

Use a staged ring, not a single switch

A practical rollout separates pilot devices, representative departments and the remaining fleet. Include systems with older peripherals, line-of-business applications, remote access, large local profiles and SMB dependencies in the pilot group. This is a deployment recommendation based on the documented SMB defaults, prerequisite servicing and changing release-health status, not a universal sequence mandated by Microsoft.

Validate management and servicing paths

  • Confirm that Windows Update client policies, WSUS or Configuration Manager offer the intended release and do not defer it indefinitely.
  • For volume-licensed deployments, verify access to the Volume Licensing Service Center media and licensing information used by your organization.
  • Plan for the prerequisite cumulative update that may be required before a later checkpoint package installs.
  • Keep recovery media, BitLocker recovery information and a tested rollback process available for pilot devices.
  • Review Microsoft’s current 24H2 release-health page immediately before each expansion wave: Windows 11, version 24H2 known issues and notifications.

Test SMB deliberately

  1. Enumerate every file server, NAS, multifunction printer and application that uses SMB.
  2. From pilot clients, test signed connections, encrypted connections and the authentication method used by each workload.
  3. Check whether any client depends on outbound NTLM, an obsolete dialect or a nonstandard port.
  4. Apply the least permissive policy that still supports documented business requirements, and replace or remediate devices that cannot meet the security baseline.
  5. Monitor help-desk tickets and authentication logs during the pilot before expanding deployment.

Known issues and what to do if something breaks

AC-3 audio applications

At the time covered by Microsoft’s release-health listing, some applications that require AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio decoding could close unexpectedly after updates released September 22, 2026 and later. Microsoft noted that the incidence depends on what the application is doing and that older applications are more likely to rely on Windows’ built-in decoder. A resolution was being worked on. This is a monthly-update issue listed on the 24H2 release-health page, not proof that every 24H2 installation has an audio defect.

If an affected application closes, note the Windows cumulative-update date and application version, check the live release-health entry for mitigation or resolution, and use the application vendor’s supported decoder or update when available. Avoid treating unrelated audio failures as evidence that the entire feature release is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SMB share no longer opens

  • Confirm that the server is online and that the failure occurs only from the upgraded client.
  • Check whether the server supports SMB signing and the negotiated dialect expected by 24H2.
  • Review signing, encryption and NTLM audit information before changing enforcement.
  • Update the server or client where possible. A temporary, narrowly scoped exception should have an owner and an expiry date rather than becoming a permanent security downgrade.

The feature update is not offered

Install the latest quality updates, verify the edition and prerequisite version, review Windows Update policies, and check the release-health page for a safeguard hold. A missing offer can be intentional protection, not a failed update service.

The PC is unstable after installation

Record the exact build and symptoms, install any pending cumulative update, and test whether one driver or application reproduces the failure. Use the organization’s tested recovery or rollback procedure rather than deleting system files or disabling security controls at random. If the issue matches a live Microsoft notification, follow the mitigation and status documented there.

Should you choose 24H2, stay on 23H2 or move later?

For a Home or Pro PC that remains on 23H2, the support deadline outweighs the convenience of postponing indefinitely. Upgrade to the currently offered supported release after checking application and file-sharing compatibility. If Windows Update offers 25H2 or another newer supported version, compare that offer with 24H2 instead of assuming 24H2 is mandatory.

For Enterprise and Education, use the remaining time before November 10, 2026 to complete pilots, remediate SMB dependencies and schedule the migration. A short, documented delay for a critical compatibility issue is different from leaving an entire fleet on an unsupported release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Copilot+ owners, 24H2 or a later supported release is the software foundation for the listed AI experiences, but the NPU requirement remains decisive. For ordinary hardware, the strongest reasons to move are support, security defaults, servicing improvements and compatibility with the current Windows ecosystem—not access to features the device cannot run.

Bottom line

Windows 11 24H2 is more than a cosmetic update: it replaces the operating system, changes cumulative-update servicing, requires SMB signing by default across all major editions, and gates several AI features behind Copilot+ hardware. A fully patched 23H2 PC may already contain some of the improvements attributed to 24H2, so evaluate the change by support status, application and SMB compatibility, and the release Microsoft currently offers your device. As of October 13, 2026, Home and Pro systems still on 23H2 are already past their servicing deadline, while Enterprise and Education administrators have a November 10, 2026 deadline to complete their move.
