To preview a document without opening it, open File Explorer, choose View, and enable Preview pane. In Windows 11 the command may be under View > Show > Preview pane; in Windows 10 it is commonly on the View tab. You can also press Alt+P to toggle the pane.
The pane shows the selected file only when Windows or an installed application provides a compatible preview handler. Files downloaded from the internet may also be blocked from preview for security reasons, even when the pane itself is enabled.

What the Preview pane does
File Explorer’s Preview pane displays the contents of the item you select in the current folder, usually on the right side of the window. It is useful for checking a report, reading the first page of a PDF, identifying a photo, or confirming which document you have before opening an application.

The Preview pane attempts to show file content. The Details pane shows metadata such as file type, size, dates and other properties. Microsoft lists Alt+P for the Preview pane and Alt+Shift+P for the Details pane in its Windows keyboard-shortcut reference.

This is a built-in File Explorer feature in both Windows 11 and Windows 10; you do not need a separate preview utility or paid application. The exact command location can differ because Microsoft has changed the File Explorer command layout between releases.
Before you start
The only requirement is a Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer with File Explorer available. You do not have to open the document first, install a replacement file manager, or purchase an add-on. Have the folder containing the document ready, and remember that the pane works on the item currently selected in that folder.
It is useful to test with more than one file. A successful preview for one document confirms that the pane is active, but it does not prove that every format has a handler. Testing a second file helps separate a view-setting problem from a file-format or security problem.
Turn on document preview in Windows 11
Use the File Explorer menu
- Open File Explorer by selecting its taskbar icon or pressing Windows key + E.
- Open the folder containing the document.
- Select the document once. The pane previews the selected item, so do not open the file yet.
- Select View on the File Explorer command bar.
- Choose Show, then select Preview pane when that nested menu appears. On some Windows 11 builds, Preview pane is shown directly in the View menu instead.
- Select another supported file to verify that the pane changes with your selection.
If you cannot find the command, press Alt+P. Microsoft documents this shortcut as the show-or-hide command for the Preview pane, and it avoids differences between Windows 11 ribbon layouts.
What you should see
When the pane is enabled, File Explorer reserves an area at the right of the window. Selecting a file should load a preview there if a compatible handler is available. Selecting a folder, an unsupported format or a file whose preview is blocked may show no document content; that does not necessarily mean the pane is turned off.
Turn on document preview in Windows 10
- Press Windows key + E, or open File Explorer from the taskbar.
- Browse to the folder containing the document.
- Select the document once.
- Open the View tab on the ribbon.
- Select Preview pane. In the common Windows 10 layout, the command is visible directly on the View tab rather than inside a Show submenu.
- Click different files to confirm that the preview follows your selection.
Alt+P performs the same toggle in Windows 10. Use it when the ribbon is collapsed, the window is narrow, or you are working on a computer whose File Explorer layout is unfamiliar.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 routes at a glance
| Windows version | Visible menu route | Keyboard route | What the route changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 | View > Show > Preview pane, or View > Preview pane on some builds | Alt+P | Shows or hides the Preview pane |
| Windows 10 | View > Preview pane | Alt+P | Shows or hides the Preview pane |
The menu and shortcut are two ways to change the same File Explorer view. There is no evidence that one method enables more file types or bypasses a security block; the selected file’s handler and its security status determine whether content appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPreview pane versus Details pane
Confusing these two panes is one of the most common reasons people think document preview is not working.
- Preview pane: displays file content when a suitable preview handler can render it. Toggle it with Alt+P.
- Details pane: displays information about the selected item rather than a rendered view of its contents. Toggle it with Alt+Shift+P.
If you see dimensions, dates, authorship or other properties but no page or image, you probably enabled the Details pane. Turn that pane off with Alt+Shift+P, then turn on the Preview pane with Alt+P.
How file support works
Preview is not a universal reader. File Explorer passes the selected item to a preview handler supplied by Windows or by an installed application. The result therefore depends on the file type and the handlers available on that computer.

Supported does not mean every file will render
A document may fail to preview when its format has no installed handler, when the handler cannot read that particular file, or when the file is protected or marked as coming from the internet. The Preview pane setting can still be enabled in all of those cases.
Use the pane as a quick inspection tool, not as a guarantee that a file can be opened or edited. If a document needs a specialized application, opening it normally may be necessary even though ordinary documents from the same folder preview correctly.
Selection matters
The pane works on the item currently selected in File Explorer. Select the file with a single click. Double-clicking opens it in its associated application instead of leaving it available for an in-place preview. Selecting a folder or an item with no preview handler will not produce document content.
A repeatable test
- Press Alt+P and make sure the pane appears.
- Single-click a document that you know normally has a Windows or application handler.
- Wait for the pane to respond, then select a second file.
- Compare the result with the Details pane: content indicates a preview, while properties indicate metadata only.
This sequence avoids changing several settings at once. If the pane stays visible but only one file is blank, investigate that file’s format or security mark rather than repeatedly toggling the pane.
Why a downloaded file may not preview
Microsoft changed the behavior for files marked as originating from the internet with security updates released on and after October 14, 2025. File Explorer can automatically disable preview for those files to reduce the risk of an attack that abuses HTML content and external paths to leak an NTLM hash. This security behavior is separate from whether the Preview pane is switched on.

For an affected file, File Explorer may show Microsoft’s warning: “The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer. If you trust the file and the source you received it from, open it to view its contents.” The warning means the file has been treated as potentially unsafe; it does not indicate that the Preview pane command failed. Microsoft’s explanation of this change is in its File Explorer preview security guidance.
Safely handling a file you trust
Only remove the block when you have independently verified the file and its source. Do not use this procedure as a blanket setting for all downloads.
- Close any application that may be using the file.
- In File Explorer, right-click the specific document and select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for the security notice and the Unblock option.
- Select Unblock, choose Apply, and then select OK.
- Return to File Explorer and select the document again. Microsoft notes that the change may take effect after the next sign-in, so sign out and back in if the preview remains blocked.
Unblocking changes the mark on that individual file. It does not make unknown downloads safe, and it should not be used merely because the Preview pane is convenient.
What the warning does and does not mean
The warning does not mean that every file in the folder is dangerous, nor does it mean that the pane is globally disabled. It identifies a file carrying an internet-origin mark and asks you to make a trust decision. Leave the file blocked when you cannot verify where it came from. If you do verify it, remove the mark only from that specific item and then test the preview again.

Windows 11 update behavior for HTML and other files
A Windows 11 preview-update notice dated September 22, 2026 (KB5124010) describes additional behavior for internet-originated files. On devices receiving that change, an HTML file can present a Preview anyway acknowledgement, while non-HTML examples such as PDFs can be previewed automatically under the updated rules. Microsoft states that availability can vary during rollout, so two Windows 11 computers may not show the same prompt or timing even when both have the Preview pane enabled. See Microsoft’s KB5124010 preview-update notice for the version-specific description.
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
This update does not replace the normal View menu or Alt+P shortcut. It changes how certain internet-marked files are handled after the pane has been enabled. If your computer has not received the relevant rollout, you may continue to see the earlier warning and individual Unblock workflow.
The date and update identifier matter because preview behavior can differ by Windows release. Do not assume that seeing Preview anyway on one Windows 11 computer means every device has the same option. Conversely, not seeing that acknowledgement is not evidence that the pane is configured incorrectly; it may simply reflect rollout timing or the type of file selected.
Resize and use the pane efficiently
Give the preview enough room
Drag the vertical divider between the file list and the preview area to make the pane wider or narrower. A narrow pane can make a page appear blank or clipped even when the handler is working. Maximizing File Explorer can also provide enough width for page text, especially on a laptop display.
Keep the pane for inspection
Use single-click selection to move through documents quickly. If you need to edit, print or search the complete file, open it in its associated application after confirming that it is the intended document. Previewing is designed to reduce unnecessary opening, not to replace the document’s full application.
When comparing several files, keep the folder in a recognizable view and move through items one at a time. If the pane appears to stop responding, select a different supported document; this helps determine whether the delay is tied to one handler or to the File Explorer view itself.
Troubleshoot a blank or missing preview
The Preview pane command is missing
- Press Alt+P first; this is the documented toggle and is independent of whether Windows 11 displays the command directly or under View > Show.
- Confirm that you are in File Explorer, not an application’s Open or Save dialog. The steps in this guide apply to the File Explorer window.
- Check that you did not enable the Details pane with Alt+Shift+P.
- Widen or maximize the File Explorer window if the command bar is compressed. Then check both the direct View menu and the Show submenu.
The pane is visible but empty
- Select a file rather than a folder, shortcut or blank area.
- Try another document type that normally has a Windows or application preview handler. If one type works and another does not, the difference is likely file-format support rather than the pane setting.
- Verify that the document is not blocked by the internet-file security behavior described above. A warning about possible harm is a security decision, not a missing-pane error.
- If the format requires a separate application and no handler is installed, File Explorer may have nothing available to render. The pane cannot preview every format simply because the feature is enabled.
- Check the file itself by selecting another copy or another document in the same folder. A single damaged, protected or unusually complex file can fail while the pane remains healthy.
The preview shows a safety warning
Read the warning and identify the file’s source. For a file you do not trust, leave it blocked and open it only after appropriate verification. For a file you do trust, use the individual Properties > Unblock process and allow for the possibility that a new sign-in is required.
Only some pages or elements appear
Preview handlers may provide a quick rendering rather than the full editing view. A complex document, embedded object or protected feature may not display exactly as it does when opened in its application. Treat the preview as an identification and inspection aid; open the file normally when exact layout or complete content matters.
The pane changes when you click files
That behavior is expected. The pane is tied to the current selection, not permanently to one document. Single-click a different item to change the content; double-click only when you intend to open the file in its associated application.
Menu or shortcut: which should you use?
| Method | Best for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| View menu | First-time setup and seeing the current setting | The command location differs between Windows 11 builds and Windows 10 layouts |
| Alt+P | Fast repeated toggling and computers with different ribbon layouts | It is less discoverable if you do not know the shortcut |
Both methods enable the same pane. Choose the menu when teaching someone the feature or checking the setting visually; choose Alt+P when you already know the pane is the view you need. Neither route changes the available handlers, the internet-origin mark, or the security rules applied to a selected file.
A practical safety checklist
- Confirm that the selected item is the document you intend to inspect.
- Use Alt+P for the Preview pane and Alt+Shift+P for the Details pane.
- Expect different results for different formats because preview handlers vary.
- Treat internet-originated-file warnings as security controls, not as ordinary display errors.
- Unblock only a specific file whose source and contents you trust.
- Remember that Windows 11’s HTML and non-HTML behavior may vary while the KB5124010 rollout is being delivered.
- Open the document in its normal application when you need complete content, editing or precise layout.
When opening the file is the better choice
Use the Preview pane when you need a quick answer such as “Which report is this?” or “Is this the document I want?” Open the file in its associated application when you need to edit, print, search the complete file, run macros or embedded content, inspect every page precisely, use accessibility features, or work with a format that has no preview handler. The pane is intentionally limited: it reduces unnecessary openings without removing the protections and application requirements that apply to the file itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to enable document preview in Windows 11?
Open File Explorer and press Alt+P. This toggles the Preview pane without requiring you to locate the command in the Windows 11 menu. You can also select View > Show > Preview pane, although some builds display the command directly under View.
How do I enable document preview in Windows 10?
Open File Explorer, select the View tab, and choose Preview pane. The same pane can be shown or hidden with Alt+P.
Why do I see file details instead of a document preview?
You likely enabled the Details pane. It shows metadata such as dates, size and authorship. Press Alt+Shift+P to hide it, then press Alt+P to show the Preview pane.
Does the Preview pane support every document format?
No. File Explorer needs a compatible preview handler supplied by Windows or an installed application. A format without a handler, a protected file or a file that the handler cannot read may remain blank even though the pane is enabled.
Why does a downloaded document say that preview could harm my computer?
Security updates released on and after October 14, 2025 can disable preview for files marked as originating from the internet. Microsoft says this reduces risk from HTML content and external paths that could expose an NTLM hash. The warning concerns the file’s security mark, not the Preview pane setting.

Only do this for a file whose source you have verified. Right-click the file, choose Properties, select Unblock on the General tab, choose Apply, and select OK. The change applies to that individual file. Microsoft notes that you may need to sign out and back in before the preview is available.
What is Preview anyway in Windows 11?
A Windows 11 update notice dated September 22, 2026 for KB5124010 describes a Preview anyway acknowledgement for some HTML files. The same notice describes automatic previews for non-HTML examples such as PDFs under updated rules. Microsoft says rollout availability varies, so the option may not appear on every computer.
Will using the menu instead of Alt+P improve preview support?
No. The menu route and Alt+P change the same File Explorer view. Neither method installs handlers, changes which formats are supported, or bypasses internet-file security controls.
Can I edit a document in the Preview pane?
No. The pane is for quick inspection. Open the file in its associated application when you need to edit, print, search the complete content, use accessibility features, or work with embedded or protected features.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The preview handler may provide a quick rendering rather than the full application view. A narrow pane can also clip text, so drag the divider wider or maximize File Explorer. For exact layout and complete content, open the document normally.
The Bottom Line
Enable File Explorer’s Preview pane with View > Show > Preview pane in Windows 11, View > Preview pane in Windows 10, or the universal Alt+P shortcut. If a selected file stays blank, check its preview-handler support and whether internet-origin security controls are blocking it. Unblock only a specifically verified file, and remember that Windows 11’s HTML and PDF behavior can vary during the KB5124010 rollout.
