Windows 10 to Windows 11 on an Unsupported PC: What the CMD Workaround Can—and Can’t—Do

setup.exe /product server is an unofficial command-line workaround, not a verified way to upgrade an unsupported Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 version 26H2. Microsoft does not document the switch, and current evidence does not establish that it works with 26H2 or that it will preserve your files and apps. If your PC meets Windows 11 requirements, use Microsoft’s supported upgrade route. If it does not, weigh the risks before attempting any unsupported installation.

Can you upgrade an unsupported PC with CMD without a USB?

Possibly, but the specific command often suggested for this—setup.exe /product server—is not a dependable, Microsoft-supported procedure based on currently available guidance. Microsoft’s public installation instructions do not document the switch. User-posted discussion about it does not verify its behavior on Windows 11 version 26H2, which Microsoft lists as generally available from September 29, 2026, build 26300 (Windows 11 release information).

That means there is no reliable basis to promise that the command will bypass hardware checks, complete an upgrade, or keep your files and apps. A command working with older installation media or Windows releases would not establish that it works with 26H2.

Which upgrade route fits your PC?

Method Eligibility USB needed Can keep files and apps? Microsoft support and 26H2 confidence
Windows Update or Installation Assistant PC must meet Windows 11 hardware requirements No USB is specified for these routes Not stated in the cited guidance for these routes Documented by Microsoft for eligible devices; Windows Update is the recommended offer path
Run installation media from within Windows Microsoft documents this as an upgrade method; unsupported-hardware eligibility is not established No bootable USB is required if the media is accessed within Windows Setup offers options to keep personal files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing Documented by Microsoft as an installation method; unsupported-PC behavior with 26H2 is not established
setup.exe /product server workaround Whether it bypasses requirements is not authoritatively established It is commonly described as a command-line approach, but current behavior is unverified Retention is not guaranteed Not documented by Microsoft; reliability on 26H2 is unverified

Microsoft recommends waiting for Windows Update to offer Windows 11 on an eligible PC. The Windows 11 specifications and requirements page and the PC Health Check app can help you check compatibility. The standard Installation Assistant only proceeds when it determines the PC meets the requirements; Microsoft recommends staying on Windows 10 if the device fails that check (Download Windows 11).

How to upgrade without booting from a USB

“Without USB” can mean two different things: using an official upgrade offer, or running Windows Setup from inside Windows instead of booting the PC from installation media. Microsoft documents the second approach as an upgrade method, with choices about what to retain. That is different from starting the computer from a USB installer, which performs a fresh installation and erases the drive.

  1. Back up important files and prepare recovery. Confirm you can restore your files and recover your current Windows installation if setup fails. Microsoft recommends backing up needed files before installing from booted media; an external backup device is one example (Reinstall Windows with the installation media).
  2. Check eligibility. Run PC Health Check and review any hardware compatibility issue it identifies. If the PC is eligible, wait for Windows Update to offer the upgrade or use Microsoft’s Installation Assistant.
  3. If using installation media, stay in your current Windows session. Access the media from within Windows and run Windows Setup there; do not boot the PC from the media if your goal is an in-place upgrade with retention choices.
  4. Review Setup’s retention choices carefully. Microsoft says Setup can offer to keep personal files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing. The available choice can determine what survives the installation.

The cited Microsoft instructions establish the in-Windows media workflow and its retention choices, but they do not validate a particular command sequence for unsupported hardware. Do not assume that the media-based method or the command-line switch will make an ineligible PC eligible.

What happens if the PC does not meet Windows 11 requirements?

Installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet minimum requirements can leave it unsupported. Microsoft does not guarantee support or update behavior for such an installation (Installing Windows 11 on devices that don’t meet minimum system requirements). A Windows license and hardware eligibility are separate issues; having a license does not establish that the PC meets the requirements or that an unsupported installation will be supported.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs will continue to start and run, but will no longer receive Microsoft software updates, including security updates, or technical support (What does it mean if Windows isn’t supported?). Consumers and organizations may be able to enroll in the paid Extended Security Updates program for Critical and Important security updates, subject to eligibility (Windows 10 Extended Security Updates).

Should you try the CMD workaround?

Only if you understand that it is an unsupported experiment, have a verified backup and recovery plan, and accept that the command may fail or leave you with an unsupported Windows installation. There is not enough authoritative evidence to recommend it as a reliable 26H2 upgrade method or to promise file and app retention.
