There is no single universal “ultimate recovery download” for Windows 10. If you need a bootable USB to install or reinstall Windows, use Microsoft’s installation media. If Windows still works and you want recovery tools for later, create a recovery drive. For a device that needs its factory setup or hardware-specific drivers, check the PC manufacturer’s support page. Choose the least disruptive option that fits your situation, and back up important files before recovery.
Choose the right Windows 10 recovery option
| Option | Best suited to | What it does to personal files |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Windows recovery tools | Windows starts, or Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) is available | Depends on the tool. System Restore is intended to roll back system changes without affecting personal files. Reset this PC lets you choose whether to keep or remove personal files. |
| USB recovery drive | You want Windows recovery media made from a working Windows PC | Reinstalling from a recovery drive removes personal files, apps, and settings. Creating the drive erases the USB stick. |
| Microsoft installation media | You need a general Windows installation USB to start setup or reinstall Windows | Depends on how you start setup and the keep option you select; a clean installation removes content. |
| PC manufacturer’s recovery media | You need a model-specific factory recovery image, drivers, or customizations | Check the instructions for your specific device and recovery image. |
Microsoft notes that manufacturer recovery media may include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft media does not. Use the support page for your PC model to check whether media is available and how to use it. Microsoft’s recovery options guide outlines the main routes.

Download Microsoft’s Windows 10 installation media
For a bootable Windows 10 installation USB, use Microsoft’s installation-media instructions. The USB needs to be blank and have at least 8 GB of space; creating the media erases everything on it. Microsoft’s instruction is direct: “Back up your files before you install or reinstall Windows on your PC.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On a working PC, open Microsoft’s Windows 10 download page.
- Under “Create Windows 10 Installation Media,” select “Download Now.”
- Run MediaCreationTool.exe and follow its prompts to create installation media on the USB drive.
- When the USB is ready, use it to start the affected PC and follow Windows Setup. Startup and boot-device instructions vary by PC model; consult the manufacturer’s support page if needed.
Installation media is for installing or reinstalling Windows. It does not restore Windows 10 security support, which ended on October 14, 2025.

Create a USB recovery drive from a working Windows PC
A recovery drive is different from Microsoft’s generic installation USB. Use the Windows Recovery Drive utility on a working Windows PC and select “Back up system files to the recovery drive” when following its instructions. Microsoft says this drive includes Windows files, updates installed when it is created, and manufacturer customizations, but not personal files. The creation process erases the USB drive, so use an empty one.
Follow Microsoft’s recovery-drive instructions to make the drive. Reinstalling from it removes personal files, apps, and settings, so it is not a file-preserving shortcut.
If Windows starts but something is wrong
Start with the least disruptive recovery tool that addresses the problem. Back up important files first, especially before resetting or reinstalling Windows. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options include these common paths:
- Uninstall a recent update: Consider this if the trouble began after an update.
- System Restore: Use a restore point to roll back system changes; this is intended not to affect personal files.
- Reset this PC: Choose whether to keep or remove personal files. Apps and settings are removed.
- Reinstall Windows: Use installation media or a recovery drive when other options do not address the problem. The effect on files depends on the route and choices; a clean installation removes content.
These options do not have identical data consequences. Read the on-screen choices carefully rather than assuming a reset or reinstall will preserve everything.

If Windows will not start or is stuck restarting
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) provides built-in troubleshooting tools and may start automatically after repeated unsuccessful boots. If it does not, Microsoft documents these ways to reach recovery:
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart from Windows, if you can reach the sign-in screen or desktop.
- Use the PC manufacturer’s recovery button or key combination; the shortcut varies by model.
- Boot from a recovery drive you created earlier.
- Boot from Windows installation media.
Once in Windows RE, choose the recovery action that fits the issue. If BitLocker is enabled, locate your BitLocker recovery key before using most Windows RE recovery options. Microsoft explains where to find a BitLocker recovery key.
Windows 10 support ended, but recovery media still works
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. An installed copy continues to function, but ordinary free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes have ended. Downloading installation media can help you install or repair Windows; it does not bring back ongoing security support. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. For devices that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, see Microsoft’s current guidance on Windows 10’s end of support.
