It was a relatively small feature update, not a major redesign: for PCs already running version 1903, Microsoft activated features that were largely present but dormant using the enablement package KB4517245. Version 1909 is now unsupported on every edition. Home and Pro support ended May 11, 2021; Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise support ended May 10, 2022.

Microsoft described versions 1903 and 1909 as sharing a common core and system files. The release name refers to the November public release; “1909” reflects the release’s year-and-month naming convention, while “19H2” was its development designation. Microsoft’s Windows 10 update history explains the shared servicing model.

What changed for everyday users?
Create calendar events from the taskbar
In version 1909, selecting the date and time on the taskbar opened the calendar flyout, where users could type an event and add details such as a time and location without opening the full Calendar app. It was an inline shortcut, not a new calendar application. Fields and account integrations depended on the built-in calendar experience and account configuration.
More direct notification controls
The update made notification settings easier to reach and understand. Action Center gained a Manage notifications button near the top, and notification senders could be sorted by most recently shown rather than alphabetically by default. Users could configure or turn off notifications from a notification itself, disable notification sounds, and see illustrations distinguishing desktop banners from notifications in Action Center.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn the Windows 10 1909 interface, notification options were under Settings > System > Notifications & actions. Labels and layouts may differ in later Windows versions.

Search from File Explorer
File Explorer’s search box was updated to use Windows Search, bringing indexed local results and online OneDrive content into a more unified search experience. OneDrive results depended on account access, connectivity, indexing, permissions, and cloud-file availability; the change did not guarantee that every cloud file would appear immediately or be available offline.
Labels in Start’s navigation pane
Hovering over the navigation pane on the left side of Start expanded it to show text labels beside its icons. This was a small discoverability improvement, not a Start-menu redesign.
Voice activation for supported assistants on the lock screen
Version 1909 allowed supported third-party digital assistants to respond to voice activation above the lock screen. An assistant had to implement the capability; availability could also depend on the app version, language, region, hardware, and privacy settings. It did not provide unrestricted access to the PC while it was locked.

Microsoft’s November 12, 2019 release announcement covers the main user-facing changes.
Technical and hardware changes
Some 1909 improvements were aimed at particular hardware or accessibility scenarios rather than at every PC:
- Processor scheduling: Windows adjusted how work was distributed among favored cores on processors with multiple preferred cores.
- Power efficiency: Microsoft made targeted battery-life and power-efficiency improvements for certain processors. These were not a guarantee of longer battery life on every device.
- Hardware development: The update added debugging capabilities for newer Intel processors and gave device makers more scope to tune inking latency to their hardware.
- Keyboard accessibility: Narrator and other assistive technologies could identify the location and locked or unlocked state of the keyboard’s Fn key.
These are specific platform changes, not evidence that all PCs became faster or more efficient. Microsoft’s 19H2 feature notes describe the technical additions.
What changed for IT administrators?
Security and management capabilities
- BitLocker recovery-password rotation: On appropriately managed Azure AD-joined or MDM-managed devices, administrators could rotate recovery passwords on demand or after a recovery password was used, reducing the risk of an exposed credential remaining in use.
- Credential Guard on ARM64: Windows Defender Credential Guard support extended credential-theft protection to enterprise ARM64 deployments.
- Win32 apps in S mode: Enterprise policy support was expanded to allow traditional Win32 desktop apps through Microsoft Intune management.
These capabilities were aimed at managed deployments and required suitable hardware, edition, identity, and management configuration; they were not general-purpose switches for every home PC.
Servicing and deployment
Organizations could obtain 1909 through Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, WSUS, and the Volume Licensing Service Center, and manage rollout with tools such as Configuration Manager or Intune. The enablement-package route applied to eligible version 1903 devices; systems earlier than 1903 and installations from media followed a conventional feature-update process. The shorter 1903-to-1909 transition reduced installation disruption, but did not remove the need to test applications, drivers, and policy compatibility.
Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions received 30 months of servicing under the applicable servicing cadence. That extended lifecycle did not apply to Home and Pro. Microsoft’s IT Pro overview and deployment guidance describe the enterprise changes and delivery options.

How version 1909 was installed
From Windows 10 version 1903
For eligible version 1903 installations, KB4517245 activated features already delivered in dormant form through servicing updates. The historical Windows Update path was:
- Install applicable servicing-stack and cumulative updates for version 1903.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If offered, select Download and install for Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909.
- Restart when prompted.
- Verify the installed version with
winver.
Because this was an enablement package rather than a full feature-update image, an eligible 1903-to-1909 upgrade was comparatively quick and normally required one restart. Microsoft’s update history identifies KB4517245.
From an earlier Windows 10 version
The enablement package was not a universal shortcut. Devices on a version earlier than 1903 used a conventional feature update, which could involve a larger download, longer installation, compatibility checks, and a more substantial rollback window.
If Windows Update did not offer it
A missing offer could reflect a safeguard hold for a known compatibility issue, missing servicing updates, a device or edition configuration, management policy, or phased availability. The responsible approach at the time was to check Windows release-health information and resolve driver or application concerns rather than force the upgrade blindly. That historical advice is not a recommendation to install 1909 now.
Historical rollback
Microsoft documented uninstalling the enablement package through Settings > Update & Security > View update history > Uninstall updates, then selecting Feature Update to Windows 10 version 1909 via Enablement Package (KB4517245). This route was time-limited: the option could disappear after the recovery window, cleanup of prior installation files, or later servicing changes. It is not a guaranteed recovery method for an unsupported system today.
How to check whether a PC is running version 1909
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Read the version number in the About Windows dialog.
Alternatively, open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. Settings layouts can differ across releases, so winver is the most direct check for version 1909.
What version 1909 did not include
Version 1909 was not a major Start-menu overhaul or a Windows 11-style redesign, and it should not be confused with features from later Windows 10 releases. In particular, later Start-menu redesigns, Search highlights, cloud reset, and other later recovery changes were not part of this release. The Chromium-based Microsoft Edge rollout was also later, not one of 1909’s November 2019 additions. Microsoft’s version history distinguishes the releases.
Is Windows 10 version 1909 still supported?
No. Microsoft ended servicing for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations on May 11, 2021. Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions reached end of servicing on May 10, 2022. Those editions no longer receive normal security or quality updates for version 1909. See Microsoft’s lifecycle notices for Home and Pro editions and Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise.
In 2019, moving from 1903 to 1909 was a practical way to reach a newer supported Windows 10 release with relatively little disruption. That historical rationale no longer applies: 1909 is not a supported security target in 2026. Use a currently supported Windows release appropriate to the device and organization, rather than seeking unofficial 1909 images or modified installers.
