Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program now covers eligible, enrolled Windows 10 PCs through October 12, 2027. Windows 10’s general support still ended on October 14, 2025: ESU extends security updates for a limited time, not full support or the operating system’s life indefinitely. If you need more time, check whether your PC qualifies for ESU or a Windows 11 upgrade; don’t treat the new end date as another promised extension.
What Microsoft extended—and what it did not
Microsoft’s current consumer ESU page lists October 12, 2027 as the end date for coverage. The additional year refers to the extension announced in June 2026 beyond the October 2026 end date originally presented for the personal-device program. Microsoft says people already enrolled continue automatically through the current end date, with no action needed. It has not announced what happens to consumer Windows 10 ESU after October 12, 2027.

Windows 10 general support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says PCs can still function after support ends, but devices without ESU no longer receive Windows security updates, feature updates, or ordinary technical support. Without security updates, Microsoft warns that devices are at greater risk from viruses and malware. Microsoft Support explains what Windows 10 end of support means.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsESU is a security-update bridge, not a return to full support
For eligible enrolled devices, the consumer program supplies critical and important security updates through Windows Update. It does not add features, provide customer-requested nonsecurity updates or design changes, or restore general Windows technical support. You can still upgrade to Windows 11 later, and Microsoft says other users on an enrolled PC are also protected. Microsoft’s Windows 10 ESU page sets out the current consumer terms.

Who qualifies, and how to enroll
Consumer ESU is for eligible PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2. On a qualifying device, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and look for the enrollment link. Microsoft says consumers can enroll until the program ends, but the device is more vulnerable before enrollment.
Choose the account option that fits how you use the PC
Microsoft lists two consumer enrollment options: stay signed in to Windows with the same Microsoft account used to enroll at no additional cost, or make a one-time purchase of $30 USD (or local-currency equivalent), plus applicable tax, to continue using a local account. The ESU license is associated with the Microsoft account used to enroll and can be used on up to 10 devices, according to Microsoft’s current page.

Terms can vary by region. For consumers in the European Economic Area (EEA), Microsoft says enrollment is available after signing in with a Microsoft account. On the no-additional-cost route, continuing to sign in with that same account matters: after up to 60 days without that sign-in, updates may stop and re-enrollment may be needed. Microsoft also lists the one-time purchase option for EEA users who want to keep using a local account. Check the current terms for your location before choosing an option.

An earlier EEA announcement by Euroconsumers, dated September 22, 2025, described an initial free one-year extension through October 13, 2026. That was the announcement’s original time frame, not the current consumer ESU end date. Euroconsumers’ announcement also describes its own view that the initial extension was insufficient; that is the organization’s characterization, not a Microsoft program term.

Choose a path based on your PC and how much time you need
| Path | Who it may suit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Enroll in consumer ESU | You need more time and have an eligible Windows 10 22H2 PC. | Security updates are scheduled through October 12, 2027, subject to enrollment terms. ESU does not restore full support or add features. |
| Upgrade the existing PC to Windows 11 | Your Windows 10 22H2 PC meets Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements. | Microsoft says the upgrade is free for qualifying PCs. Check hardware eligibility before planning the move. |
| Replace the PC with a Windows 11 device | Your current hardware is ineligible, or you prefer a new device. | This requires a purchase but moves you to supported hardware and software. Microsoft recommends a new Windows 11 PC as a transition option. |
| Use a cloud PC | You are an organization or have needs suited to a cloud-hosted desktop. | Microsoft includes Windows 365 among transition options. A cloud PC is a service path, so consider subscription and connectivity needs. |
Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance covers Windows 11 upgrade eligibility and supported transition options. Check the PC’s eligibility first; don’t assume that every Windows 10 computer can upgrade.

- October 14, 2025: Windows 10 general support ended.
- October 12, 2027: current end date for consumer ESU coverage, according to Microsoft.
- October 10, 2028: Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 are scheduled to receive security updates until this date. This applies to the apps, not general Windows 10 support.
Business ESU is also separate from the consumer offer. Microsoft Learn lists a commercial starting price of $61 USD per device for Year One, with the price doubling for each consecutive year, up to three years. Microsoft describes commercial ESU as annual and cumulative; those business terms do not set the price or enrollment conditions for consumers. See Microsoft Learn’s Windows 10 ESU program details.
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog transition guide also discusses Windows 11 PCs and Windows 365. Neither the app-update date nor the business ESU schedule changes the current consumer ESU end date.
