Will Your AT&T Mexico Contract, Balance, and Phone Number Change After the Acquisition?

Not immediately. AT&T announced on October 13, 2026, that it agreed to sell AT&T Mexico to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2 billion in cash at closing. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending customary conditions and Mexican regulatory approvals. AT&T says the announcement itself does not affect service, including service for U.S. customers traveling in Mexico.

Your existing contract, device installments, and phone number therefore continue to be governed by your current documents for now. The announcement does not publish a post-closing billing system, brand, pricing, promotion policy, or new contract, so those details cannot yet be predicted.

What the announced sale actually changes today

The transaction is an agreement, not a completed transfer. AT&T Inc. announced the proposed sale on October 13, 2026. The stated consideration is $2 billion in cash paid at closing, and the companies expect closing during the first quarter of 2027. Completion still depends on customary closing conditions and approvals from Mexican regulators.

Until closing occurs, AT&T Mexico remains the service provider identified in your account and contract. AT&T’s customer FAQ uses unusually broad wording: “There are no impacts to your service related to this announcement – including for customers traveling to Mexico from the U.S.” That statement addresses the period covered by the announcement; it is not a promise about every commercial detail after closing.

You do not need to change a plan, replace a SIM, pay a special acquisition charge, or sign a document merely because the sale was announced. Continue using your service and paying invoices through the normal channels unless AT&T sends an official, contractually valid notice that changes an operational detail.

Will your existing contract be cancelled or rewritten?

No cancellation, automatic rewrite, or mandatory migration to new terms is described in the sale announcement. The Mexican regulator’s mobile-contract page lists AT&T among the providers whose adhesion contracts can be consulted. That registered contract, together with the version you accepted, is the practical reference while the transaction is pending.

What to check in your own documents

  • The contract or plan summary showing your monthly charge, included services, term, and cancellation conditions.
  • Any equipment-financing agreement, including the number of installments and the amount still outstanding.
  • Promotion terms that specify a discount period, eligibility requirement, minimum term, or consequence of early cancellation.
  • Recent invoices and account notices, which establish what AT&T has actually billed and whether a temporary offer is still active.

Keep copies of these records in a place you can access without the carrier’s app. Screenshots should include the date and the complete page, not just a promotional headline. If a future notice proposes a different contract, you can compare it against the terms you saved instead of relying on memory.

Could a new owner ask you to sign again?

A future owner could publish a new customer agreement or ask customers to accept updated terms, but the cited announcement does not say that this will happen. It also does not set a deadline, describe a consent process, or explain whether acceptance would be required to keep service. Treat any request as a separate notice to read carefully, rather than assuming the acquisition itself changes your obligations.

What happens to an unpaid phone or device balance?

AT&T México’s current postpaid terms allow a customer either to use a personal device or to finance a device over 24, 30, or 36 months. The same terms state that deferred-equipment charges continue until the equipment is fully paid. The acquisition announcement does not announce forgiveness, acceleration, or an immediate payoff demand.

What you should do with installments

  1. Open your latest bill and record the equipment line, installment number, and remaining amount.
  2. Save the financing terms and any receipt showing the original device purchase or upgrade.
  3. Keep making the scheduled payment through the existing account while the sale is pending.
  4. Compare every future bill with the saved installment schedule. A different description or billing platform is not, by itself, proof that the principal balance changed.
  5. If a notice says the remaining balance is due at once, ask for the contractual clause and a written explanation before paying an unexpected amount.

An acquisition announcement cannot be used as evidence that your debt has disappeared, nor does it establish that the balance becomes immediately due. Your signed financing arrangement and later formal notices are the documents that would show a change.

What is not yet known about device financing

The available announcement does not identify the company that will service existing installment accounts after closing, whether account numbers will change, how autopay authorizations will be handled, or whether customers will receive a replacement financing statement. It also does not state how promotional device credits will be administered. Do not assume any of these outcomes until the proposed owners or the regulator publish specific instructions.

Will you keep your AT&T Mexico phone number?

You should not receive a new number solely because AT&T Mexico is being sold. The Mexican regulator’s Portabilidad Numérica page explains: “La Portabilidad es el Derecho de los usuarios de conservar el mismo número telefónico al cambiarse de concesionario o prestador de servicios de telefonía de manera gratuita y en 24 horas.” In English, portability is the user’s right to keep the same telephone number when changing concessionaire or telephone-service provider, free of charge and within 24 hours.

That right matters if you later decide to leave the service, whether before or after closing. It is a mechanism for moving your number to another provider; it is not an announcement that every AT&T Mexico customer must switch. Keep control of the line, make sure your identity information is current, and do not surrender a working number to an unverified caller claiming to process the sale.

When a number-porting request may be appropriate

  • You independently choose another provider and want to retain the number.
  • A verified post-closing notice gives you a migration choice and explains the porting process.
  • Your service fails and the provider cannot restore it under the terms that apply to you.

Use the receiving provider’s official process and keep the confirmation of the request. A port completed without your authorization is a separate account-security problem; contact the providers promptly and preserve messages, dates, and case numbers.

Which customer details remain unresolved?

The announced transaction does not publish the operational model customers will see after closing. The following items are therefore not stated in the announcement or the cited FAQ:

Customer question What is established What is not yet stated
Brand and storefronts The proposed buyers are Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings. The post-closing consumer brand, store network, and app are not stated.
Billing Current invoices remain the reference while the deal is pending. A new billing platform, account number, invoice format, and autopay process are not stated.
Prices and plans No immediate service impact is announced. Future rates, plan names, included allowances, and eligibility rules are not stated.
Promotions Existing promotion terms remain relevant to your current account. How discounts or device credits will be honored after closing is not stated.
Coverage and roaming AT&T says the announcement does not affect service, including U.S. customers traveling in Mexico. Any post-closing coverage, roaming, or international-use policy is not stated.
Support channels Use your existing verified support channels while service remains with AT&T Mexico. Future telephone numbers, chat systems, stores, and escalation routes are not stated.
Contracts Your signed agreement and regulator-registered terms remain the working documents. A replacement agreement or required acceptance process is not stated.

“Not stated” is different from “will not change.” It means there is no published basis yet for a precise answer. Avoid treating rumors, social-media posts, or an unsolicited text as an official policy.

What to do before the expected first-quarter 2027 closing

1. Build a simple account record

Write down your mobile number, account number, plan name, regular monthly charge, billing date, and customer-service contact method. Save the latest several invoices and the contract version available in your account. Redact passwords and payment-card details before storing copies in cloud folders or sharing them.

2. Separate service charges from equipment charges

Your bill may combine airtime, taxes, add-ons, and a device installment. Record each separately. A future invoice that changes the layout can still be reconciled if you know the old components and the installment end date.

  • EASY ACTIVATION: Bring your own phone and activate your SIM on the Tello website; check your phone compatibility and coverage maps before purchasing to confirm service in your area

3. Check automatic payments

Confirm which bank or card authorization is active and when it runs. Do not cancel a working authorization solely because of the announcement; a missed payment can create avoidable service or credit problems. If an official migration requires a new authorization, establish it through a verified channel and remove the old one only after the final transition instructions are clear.

4. Verify contact information

Make sure the account has your current email address and mobile contact. Official notices about billing or migration are more useful when they reach you, but never use a link in an unexpected message to provide a password, one-time code, identity document, or payment details.

5. Watch for formal notices, not predictions

A meaningful notice should identify the sender, effective date, affected service, contract or account terms, and a support route you can verify independently. Save the complete notice and any acknowledgment you submit.

How to evaluate a post-closing offer if one arrives

If the new owners present replacement plans or migration choices, compare the documents line by line before accepting. Use this checklist:

  • Monthly price: Include taxes, mandatory fees, and the price after any introductory period.
  • Included service: Check data, voice minutes, messaging, hotspot allowances, speed limits, and overage rules.
  • Contract term: Note the minimum period, renewal language, cancellation fee, and consequences of changing plans.
  • Device balance: Confirm the principal still owed, the number of installments, and whether credits remain attached to the account.
  • Promotion continuity: Look for a written statement about discounts, trade-in credits, and eligibility after migration.
  • Coverage and roaming: Check the areas and networks covered, especially if you travel between Mexico and the United States.
  • Number handling: Confirm that your existing number is retained automatically or learn the documented porting steps and timing.
  • Support and disputes: Record the new billing contact, complaint route, and regulator information supplied with the offer.

Do not compare only the headline monthly price. A cheaper plan can cost more if it removes a device credit, shortens a promotional period, adds a financing charge, or excludes the roaming you use.

Recognizing acquisition-related scams

Corporate transactions often generate convincing impersonation attempts. A caller may claim that your number will be deleted unless you “verify” it, or that an immediate payment is needed to preserve your balance. The announcement provides no basis for those demands.

  • End unsolicited calls and contact the carrier through a number printed on a prior bill or displayed after signing in through the usual app or website.
  • Never disclose a one-time verification code, account password, full payment-card number, or identity document to an unverified contact.
  • Do not install a remote-access app or change SIM settings at a caller’s instruction.
  • Check the sender and destination of links by opening the known carrier channel yourself rather than tapping the message.
  • Keep screenshots, phone numbers, dates, and transaction records if you report an attempted takeover.

A practical timeline for customers

Period What you can reasonably do
Announcement through closing Use service normally, pay existing invoices, preserve contracts and device records, and monitor verified notices.
Regulatory-review period Recognize that timing can move; do not treat the expected first-quarter 2027 date as a guaranteed completion date.
Official migration notice Read the effective date, billing instructions, contract language, promotion treatment, support contacts, and number procedure before acting.
After closing Reconcile the first bills, confirm device installments and promotions, test support access, and report discrepancies with your saved records.

Bottom line for your account

The sale announcement does not by itself cancel your AT&T Mexico contract, erase or accelerate a device balance, or assign you a new telephone number. AT&T says current service is unaffected by the announcement, and the proposed closing remains subject to approvals. Keep paying and documenting your existing arrangement until an official notice provides different, specific terms. Future branding, billing, prices, promotions, support channels, coverage, and migration procedures remain open questions; evaluate them only from formal information issued after the transaction’s required approvals and closing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
