Lanterns had not been officially renewed for Season 2 as of October 2, 2026. Reports of a writers’ room and early story planning suggest the creative team is exploring what could come next, but they do not amount to an HBO or DC Studios greenlight. The available reporting also does not establish that viewing figures secured another season.
Has HBO renewed Lanterns for Season 2?
No. The latest report in this update, published by TV Insider on October 2, 2026, says HBO and DC Studios had not officially renewed Lanterns for a second season. That is the clearest answer to whether another season is confirmed: it is not.

Warner Bros. Discovery originally announced Lanterns as an eight-episode HBO drama based on DC’s Green Lantern. HBO executive Casey Bloys described the series as an original detective story in the company’s announcement.

What does the reported writers’ room mean?
It means the creative team is developing possibilities, not that HBO has ordered another season. Damon Lindelof said Chris Mundy had started a writers’ room to consider stories the series could tell next. Mundy described the work as laying out a season before taking it to decision-makers. Those comments point to active exploration, while leaving approval unresolved.

- Factory sealed DVD
TV Insider reported on October 2 that a Season 2 writers’ room had reportedly been assembled and named Chris Mundy, Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, and Vanessa Baden Kelly as expected participants. The lineup is reported, not an official studio confirmation, and the same report says a second season is not guaranteed.
The distinction matters: writers can prepare a possible next season before executives decide whether to commission it. Creative preparation is a sign of interest; a formal renewal announcement is the sign that would settle the show’s status.

Does the finale wording confirm another season?
No. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn called the October 4 installment a “Season finale, correct,” as reported by GamesRadar. Calling it a season finale rather than a series finale leaves room for the story to continue, but does not confirm that Season 2 has been ordered.

That has not been established. The reporting reviewed describes the show’s viewership qualitatively, including as a success, but does not provide a precise, attributable audience figure with a measurement period and geography. Nor does it identify a studio representative explicitly linking audience performance to a Season 2 decision.

Lindelof framed the possibility conditionally at the series premiere: “If it’s successful and people love it, there’s a lot of runway to launch into future seasons.” That describes potential, not a renewal decision or proof that ratings caused one.

There are two separate signals: reported story development suggests the creative team is preparing ideas, while the latest reported formal status remains unrenewed. Bloys has also cautioned against treating development reporting as a greenlight; TechRadar’s September 16, 2026 account said The People v Gorilla Grodd was the only DC Studios TV show then in active development. That context reinforces the need to distinguish planning from commissioning, but does not independently determine Lanterns’ future.
Rank #4
For now, the accurate description is that Lanterns Season 2 is under discussion and reported creative development, not officially renewed. The status may change, so a later HBO or DC Studios announcement would supersede this update.
