Will the U.S. Megadrought Ever End? What the Science Says in 2026

The drought can ease, and wetter years will almost certainly come. No credible source gives an end date, though, and “ending” is not one event. A run of wet seasons can pull the Southwest out of drought categories on the map. It does not automatically refill reservoirs, rebuild groundwater, restore snowpack or reverse the warming that makes each dry spell hit harder.

“The U.S. megadrought” in the science is mainly the multidecadal drought centered on the Southwest and affecting the wider western U.S. It is not a uniform drought across every state. The rest of this article separates the different meanings of “end,” shows the dated 2026 evidence, and explains why history and climate models do not support a calendar prediction.

What “end” can mean

When people ask whether the megadrought will end, they usually mean one of two things. The sources support very different answers for each.

Meaning of “end” What it looks like Can it happen soon?
Drought-monitor relief Drought indicators improve and areas leave drought categories after wetter conditions Yes. Wet seasons and regional improvement are normal parts of precipitation variability.
Hydrologic recovery Reservoirs, groundwater, snowpack, streamflow and ecosystems recover from accumulated deficits Slower and less certain. A wet season can leave these impacts largely in place.
Return to the old baseline The region’s moisture balance goes back to its pre-drought norm Hardest. Warming-driven aridification works against it.

NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), the National Academies and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) all point the same way. A drought episode can improve while longer-term water impacts persist, and a short-term end to drought conditions would not necessarily mean a return to the past water regime.

The National Academies’ 2026 consensus report, Improving Future U.S. Drought Assessment, describes the Southwest megadrought as among the most severe in the past 1,200 years. It also says drought behavior and assessment are changing as climate, land and water management, and historical baselines change. Its official page states: “Droughts are becoming more frequent and longer-lasting, occurring against a backdrop of long-term regional drying trends in many areas.”

Why monsoon rain was not expected to fix it

The June update is a clear example of the gap between relief and recovery. NIDIS expected above-average monsoon precipitation to help short-term drought conditions. It also said the long-term impacts of the record-low snowpack would remain. It judged that monsoon rain would likely have little influence on Colorado and Rio Grande streamflow and would not substantially change regional reservoir levels. A wet season, in other words, was expected to improve the map without refilling the system.

Why wetter years may not restore the old balance

Precipitation still matters. A run of wet years can shrink a cumulative precipitation deficit, and the Southwest has a long history of wet and dry swings. But heat raises evaporative demand and worsens moisture stress. Describing this drought as only “not enough rain” leaves out the role of temperature.

The USGS’s 2025 synthesis, Climate change and future water availability in the United States (Scholl, McCabe, Olson and Powlen, Professional Paper 1894), treats aridification and drought as processes that shape future water availability. It examines precipitation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, streamflow, lakes and wetlands, snow and ice, and groundwater. Those are the places where lingering impacts show up even when a drought map improves.

What history says about recovery time

A peer-reviewed 2022 study in Communications Earth & Environment, “Southwestern United States drought of the 21st century presages drier conditions into the future” (archived in NOAA’s repository), asked how long the Southwest has historically needed to recover from a deficit like the current one. Its figures describe a reconstructed precipitation record. They are not a forecast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The shortest estimated time to recover the current cumulative precipitation deficit to climatological normal was five years, tied to a wet run in the 1740s.
  • Only 2.9% of the study’s recovery values were 10 years or less.
  • Only 13.6% were 30 years or less.

Fast recovery has happened, but it is the rare end of the distribution. The study also estimated that temperature’s role relative to precipitation had grown in the drought indices it analyzed. Its estimates were 34% and 37% reductions in precipitation’s relative role in two indices. These are empirical estimates for those indices. They do not mean climate change explains that fraction of the whole drought.

  • Versatile Landscaping Application: Perfect for paver gaps, rock gardens, flower bed borders or lawn alternatives, naturally suppressing weed growth.

The authors conclude that recovery to prior moisture-balance conditions is harder once temperature stress is counted alongside precipitation.

What climate models add, and what they cannot say

In the same study’s CMIP6 analysis under the high-emissions SSP5-8.5 scenario, expected Southwest moisture balances stayed strongly negative through the 21st century. Model outcomes varied widely and included wetter ones.

That result is conditional on a high-emissions pathway and on model assumptions. It does not say every year will be dry. It does not prove this particular drought cannot end. It supplies no end date. Neither the historical record nor the projections can tell you the year this drought will be declared over.

How to read a future “drought is over” headline

  • Check the geography. Is the claim about the Southwest, the western U.S. or the whole country? Nationwide drought coverage and five-state coverage are different measures.
  • Check the date. Drought status and reservoir levels change week to week, and seasonal summaries describe a period rather than a single day.
  • Check what improved. A better drought-monitor category is not the same as higher reservoir storage, recovered streamflow or restored groundwater.
  • Check the snowpack. In the Southwest, winter snow feeds spring and summer runoff. Record-low snowpack, as in 2026, leaves a gap that rain at other times of year may not close.
  • Check for temperature. A wet year during a record-warm period may still leave a moisture deficit.
  • Separate observation from projection. Monitoring reports what has happened. Model projections say what could happen under stated assumptions.

The honest answer

Yes, drought conditions in the Southwest can and likely will ease at times, and individual wet seasons can bring real relief. The more demanding question is whether the region’s water supply returns to where it was before the megadrought. The evidence suggests that is harder than a wet year or two, because warming raises the bar for recovery. For a technical, non-predictive look at how drought is measured and why those methods are being reconsidered, the National Academies report is a useful companion. It is a guide to assessment and planning, not a forecast of when the drought ends.
