Short answer: The next Zelda game Nintendo has announced that is relevant to this question is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, arriving on November 5, 2026. Nintendo describes this release as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, so it has not been announced for the original Nintendo Switch.
That answer needs one important qualification: this is the Nintendo 64 classic returning for a new generation, not a newly announced mainline Zelda sequel. Nintendo’s announcement also does not specify a physical edition, cartridge, download format, upgrade path, or other retail details.

What Nintendo has actually announced
Nintendo’s current official announcement identifies The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as the relevant upcoming release. The anniversary information lists it for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. In its announcement, Nintendo describes the project as the Nintendo 64 classic returning for a new generation and says it is “reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.”
That wording answers the platform question more clearly than the phrase “next Zelda game” might suggest. Nintendo is announcing a return of a known classic, not presenting a brand-new numbered or otherwise new mainline entry. The game is significant because of its place in Zelda history, but the announcement should not be described as the reveal of an entirely new Zelda adventure.

The platform named by Nintendo
The announced platform is Nintendo Switch 2. “Exclusive” is the key term: Nintendo has tied this release to the newer console rather than listing both generations of Switch hardware. The official material does not promise that the game will run on the original Nintendo Switch.
The date Nintendo lists
Nintendo lists November 5, 2026 as the release date. That is a scheduled date in the announcement, not a report of a launch that has already happened. Buyers should still check Nintendo’s own store and regional notices for any later change to timing, availability, or purchase format.
Original Nintendo Switch versus Nintendo Switch 2
Many readers use “Nintendo Switch” as a general name for the family of consoles, but this announcement distinguishes the two generations. The original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 are not interchangeable labels for this release.

If you own the original Switch
On the information currently available, owning an original Nintendo Switch does not establish access to this release. Nintendo’s use of “exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2” means the safe buying assumption is that the original console is not supported unless Nintendo later announces a separate compatibility arrangement.
That does not mean every Zelda game disappears from the original Switch. Older Zelda titles, remasters, or other releases can have their own platform decisions. It means only that this particular announced return has been identified as a Switch 2 exclusive. Platform availability must be checked title by title.
If you already have a Switch 2
Switch 2 is the console directly relevant to the announcement. Nintendo has not yet supplied every purchasing detail in the material available for this title, but the platform requirement itself is clear: the announced release is intended for the newer hardware.
If you are deciding whether to buy a console
This announcement can be one factor in a hardware decision, but it should not be treated as a complete buying guide. Nintendo has not stated that this game is the only reason to choose Switch 2, nor has it published all launch, pricing, storage, accessory, or retail information here. The narrow conclusion is that an original Switch should not be purchased with the expectation that it will play this announced release.

“Next” can refer to several different things: the next game announced, the next game released, the next new mainline installment, or the next title a particular player has not experienced. Those meanings are not identical in this case.
It is a returning classic
Ocarina of Time originally appeared on Nintendo 64. Nintendo’s current announcement frames the Switch 2 project as that classic returning in 2026. Calling it a return, re-release, or revival is more precise than calling it a newly announced mainline Zelda game.
It is not evidence about every future Zelda project
The official material identifies this release and its platform. It does not establish that Nintendo has announced no other Zelda project anywhere, nor does it provide a complete schedule for future new entries. Therefore, the defensible wording is “the next Zelda game Nintendo has announced that is relevant here,” rather than a sweeping claim that no other Zelda announcement exists.
What “Switch 2 exclusive” means for compatibility
For practical purposes, an exclusive release is one Nintendo is assigning to the named platform. In this case, the named platform is Switch 2. Unless Nintendo later changes the listing or announces a separate version, readers should distinguish three different possibilities:
Recommended Free Tools
- Native Switch 2 release: the option Nintendo has announced.
- Original Switch version: not announced in the cited material.
- Backward compatibility: not promised by the announcement for this title.
Those categories matter because a game can be available on a newer console without being available on the older one. A Switch 2 owner may be able to access a release that an original Switch owner cannot, even though both systems belong to the broader Switch family.
Do not infer compatibility from the name alone
A title containing “Nintendo Switch” in a headline or retailer description is not enough to prove support for the original console. Look for the exact platform designation in Nintendo’s listing. For this game, Nintendo’s own wording points specifically to Switch 2 and uses the term “exclusive.”
Do not infer an upgrade from an older purchase
The announcement does not say that an existing copy of another Zelda game will unlock this release, nor does it describe an upgrade program. It also does not state that an original Switch version will receive a free or paid conversion. Treat those as unanswered questions rather than assumed features.

What has not been announced yet
Readers often want to know more than the console and date. The available announcement is narrower, so several useful details remain open.
Physical edition and retail format
Nintendo’s announcement does not identify a physical game edition, cartridge, download-only release, collector’s package, or specific retailer arrangement. Do not promise a cartridge or a particular purchase option based on the announcement alone.
Pricing
No price is established in the information available for this title. A future regional store listing may provide pricing, but it should be checked for the buyer’s country because Nintendo prices and taxes can vary by market.
Technical features
The announcement does not establish resolution, frame rate, visual changes, audio options, control schemes, save-transfer support, display modes, or other technical specifications. The fact that the game is returning on newer hardware does not, by itself, prove any particular enhancement.
Availability by country
The anniversary information that lists the date is from Nintendo Australia. The Switch 2 platform designation is the important compatibility signal, but release timing, storefront listings, ratings, packaging, and purchase terms can differ by region. Check the Nintendo site and eShop serving your location before ordering.

How to check your own setup before release
If you are trying to determine whether you will be ready to play, use this short verification process rather than relying on a retailer headline or a social-media summary.
- Identify your console model. Confirm whether you own the original Nintendo Switch family hardware or Nintendo Switch 2. The system name shown in the console settings and on the packaging is more reliable than the generic phrase “Switch.”
- Check Nintendo’s title listing. Look for the exact The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time listing in your region and confirm that it names Switch 2.
- Verify the date in your region. Use the local Nintendo announcement or store page to confirm whether November 5, 2026 applies to your market and whether the date has changed.
- Wait for purchase details before choosing a format. Since the announcement does not specify cartridge or download availability, do not pay a reseller premium for an unconfirmed edition.
- Check for later compatibility notices. If Nintendo publishes an original-Switch version, a special upgrade, or another access route, that later notice would supersede the current assumption. Until then, treat Switch 2 exclusivity as the operative rule.
A precise answer to common reader scenarios
“Can I play it on my launch-model Switch?”
Nothing in the announcement confirms that. Nintendo identifies the release as exclusive to Switch 2, so an original Switch owner should not count on access.
“Is this the next brand-new Zelda game?”
No. It is the announced return of the Nintendo 64 classic Ocarina of Time. That makes it an upcoming Zelda release, but not a newly revealed mainline installment.
“Should I buy a Switch 2 just for this game?”
The announcement establishes Switch 2 as the relevant console, but it does not provide enough information to make a complete purchase recommendation. Consider the wider Switch 2 library, your budget, display setup, and other games you expect to play. The specific compatibility point is straightforward: the original Switch is not the platform Nintendo has announced for this title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Will there be a physical cartridge?”
Nintendo has not stated that in the announcement. Wait for an official store or product listing before assuming a physical edition exists.
“Does this confirm the next original Zelda adventure?”
No. It confirms a 2026 Switch 2 return of Ocarina of Time. It does not provide a release date or platform announcement for a separate, newly created mainline game.
What to watch for in future Nintendo updates
The most useful future announcements will be the ones that answer the remaining practical questions: whether Nintendo offers physical media, how the game is sold in each region, its price, technical features, and whether any compatibility or upgrade policy exists. A later announcement could add those details without changing the current platform statement.
Until Nintendo publishes such information, keep the facts separate from assumptions. The confirmed points are the returning Nintendo 64 title, its November 5, 2026 date, and its Switch 2 exclusivity. The original Switch version, retail format, price, and technical specifications remain unconfirmed.
