Will the Motorola Razr Stop at Android 17? It Depends on the Model

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No—not every Motorola Razr stops at Android 17. The claim most plausibly applies to the Razr+ (2024): Android 17 is expected to be its final major Android upgrade under reporting of a three-generation policy, but Motorola’s U.S. support page currently lists Android 16 as its next OS upgrade. Newer Razr models have different launch versions and update policies. A phone’s last major Android upgrade is also not necessarily the end of its security support.

Which Motorola Razr is the Android 17 claim about?

“Motorola Razr” is a product family, not one phone with one update schedule. The clearest case for Android 17 being a final major upgrade is the U.S. Razr+ (2024). Even there, the endpoint is an expectation based on reported policy, not an unqualified final-version statement on Motorola’s support page.

Motorola lists Razr generations and configurations separately. Its U.S. Android 15 compatibility page includes the Razr (2023), Razr+ (2023), Razr+ (2024), Razr (2025), Razr+ (2025), Razr Ultra (2025), and the Razr 40, 40 Ultra, 50, 50 Ultra, 60 and 60 Ultra. Names also vary by market: the Razr 60 Ultra is closely related to the model marketed in North America as the Razr Ultra (2025). Check the exact model and sales region before applying another Razr’s policy to your own phone. Motorola’s Android 15 compatibility list identifies models, but inclusion on that list alone does not specify each phone’s final Android version.

Razr update outlook by model

The table separates Motorola’s published U.S. status from endpoints inferred by counting the promised OS generations. “Final version” is an inference where Motorola’s cited page does not explicitly name the endpoint; “not stated” means the cited material does not establish the value.

Razr+ (2024), U.S. Android 14 Motorola’s U.S. listing shows Android 16 as next. Separate reporting describes three Android generations and expects Android 17 to be the final major upgrade. Android 17 is expected under the reported three-generation policy; Motorola’s cited support page does not itself confirm that endpoint. Through June 2028, per Motorola’s U.S. listing.
Razr+ (2026), U.S. Android 16 Motorola lists Android 17 as the next OS upgrade. Not established by the cited support page. Android 17 being next does not mean it is final. Through May 2030; Motorola lists at least bi-monthly security updates.

Why Android 17 could be the last major update for the Razr+ (2024)

An OS-upgrade count starts with the Android version the phone launched on and counts subsequent major versions. The Razr+ (2024) launched with Android 14. If the reported three-generation policy applies as Android 15, 16 and 17, Android 17 would be the third and final major upgrade. Android Central reports that expectation, while Motorola’s U.S. page currently lists Android 16 as the next OS upgrade. Those sources are not synchronized, so treat Android 17 as expected rather than a confirmed final-version statement from Motorola.

Motorola says its published update information describes current plans, not a binding commitment, and that timing or coverage can change. Availability can also vary with region, carrier, firmware channel and certification. See Motorola’s software upgrade information for its policy caveats. A listed next version is a status snapshot, not proof that every device in every market is still waiting for that update.

Android upgrades and security support are different

A major Android upgrade changes the platform version. Security Maintenance Releases address vulnerabilities and can continue for the phone’s existing Android version after major OS upgrades end. Google Play system updates, Play Store app updates and Motorola app updates are separate delivery paths; maintenance releases may also address stability, connectivity or other device issues without changing the Android version. Motorola explains the distinction between OS upgrades and security updates in its U.S. software-update guidance.

For the models with U.S. dates established here, Motorola lists security support through September 2027 for the Razr (2023), June 2028 for the Razr+ (2024), and May 2030 for the Razr+ (2026). These dates are model-specific, not a promise for the whole Razr range. Motorola notes that plans can vary by product channel, region and certification, and may change; its security-update information provides the broader qualification. Security updates are not necessarily monthly: Motorola lists at least a bi-monthly cadence for the Razr+ (2026).

When major upgrades stop, the phone can still receive security patches or other updates during its listed support period. Over time, however, some new platform features may be unavailable, and apps can eventually require a newer Android version. Motorola’s Razr 2025 Android 16 user guide notes that newer apps may require a newer Android version and that many improvements also arrive through app updates. App compatibility, banking or enterprise access, and feature availability therefore depend on the app and device, not only the major-version endpoint.

How to check your Razr’s Android version and updates

  1. To identify the software version, open Settings > About phone, then choose Device details or Android version. Labels may vary slightly by software build.
  2. To check for an update, open Settings > System > System updates and tap Check for updates. On some builds the control is under Settings > About phone > System updates.
  3. Use Wi-Fi where possible and keep the phone charged or connected to power while downloading and installing.
  4. If no update appears, confirm the exact model number and whether the phone is carrier-branded or unlocked. Install the latest available security patch, restart, and check the model-specific Motorola support listing. Rollouts can be staged, and carrier certification may affect timing.

Motorola says its many models, regions, distribution channels, carriers and partners mean software versions require extensive testing. A delayed update on one unit does not by itself show that the model has been excluded. Motorola also says users cannot downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update; avoid unofficial firmware unless you understand the possible data loss, warranty and device-failure risks.

Should you keep or buy a Razr if Android 17 is its endpoint?

Do not decide from the Android number alone. For a phone you already own, weigh its remaining security-support period, condition, repair cost and whether your essential apps still work. The end of major upgrades by itself is not a reason to discard a phone that remains secure, functional and affordable to maintain. Reconsider when its security-support period ends, required apps no longer work, or a repair is uneconomical.

For a purchase, compare the model’s launch Android version, promised number of OS upgrades, security end date and patch cadence, then consider carrier and regional policy, foldable repair costs, price and likely resale value. “Three years of updates” can mean three Android generations, not three years from the day you buy the handset. A discount on an older Razr is only useful if its remaining support life suits your plans. An imported model may have different update timing, modem-band compatibility and warranty coverage.

Motorola’s foldable design and outer-display experience may be the priority for some buyers; update timing has historically been less predictable than the clearest update messaging from Google or Samsung. A Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is a closer flip-foldable alternative, while Google Pixel phones may suit buyers prioritizing Android updates but are not a like-for-like flip-foldable substitute. Check the current model-specific policy rather than assuming one brand-wide promise: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip range and Google’s phone lineup change over time.
