Local reporting says the new Freelander brand intends to launch in 2027 with the Freelander 8 as its first model. That is a target year, not a confirmed on-sale or delivery date: local dealers, prices and vehicle specifications have not yet been announced.
What is confirmed about a New Zealand launch?
Chery Group’s 3 October 2026 international roadmap names Australia and New Zealand as priority markets for the brand’s right-hand-drive expansion. It does not set an entry date for New Zealand or name local retailers. The following day, CarExpert NZ reported that Freelander plans to launch locally in 2027, led by the Freelander 8. Its report says exact timing, dealer appointments, pricing and specifications are still pending.

Accordingly, 2027 is the reported launch target—not a confirmed date for orders, showroom availability or customer deliveries. The roadmap says local plans will be confirmed progressively.

Which New Zealand dealers will sell it?
No Freelander dealers have been named. Local reporting describes an intended network using established dealerships with premium showrooms and dedicated sales, service and aftersales training, but that plan does not identify the retailers.

Do not assume an existing Land Rover retailer or a Chery/Omoda Jaecoo outlet will sell or service the vehicle. Jaguar Land Rover New Zealand’s current retailer and authorised repairer locator lists Land Rover locations; it is not a Freelander appointment list.
Is Freelander a Land Rover model?
Freelander is a JLR and Chery collaboration, but the new brand should not be treated as simply a current Land Rover model. In a June 2024 announcement, JLR and Chery said Freelander was licensed to their 50:50 Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture. The initial plan was to sell vehicles in China through a distinct retailer network, with global exports intended over time. The companies’ announcement is available from JLR.

What is not yet known about the New Zealand vehicle?
New Zealand pricing and the local trim, powertrain, safety equipment, charging details and final specification have not been established in the available launch reporting. Chery’s Freelander 8 launch material concerns the Middle East model and says specifications can vary by market and trim. Those overseas details are not a substitute for a New Zealand specification sheet.

Chinese or Middle East specifications alone cannot establish how the New Zealand model will compare.

What should buyers ask a dealer before paying a deposit?
Once retailers are appointed, ask for answers in writing. These questions address details that remain unsettled; they are not policies already announced for New Zealand.
- Is the vehicle a New Zealand-market, right-hand-drive model? Which trim and powertrain are confirmed for New Zealand?
- What is the drive-away price, what does it include, and can it change between ordering and delivery?
- Is the payment an expression of interest, a refundable deposit or a binding order? What are the written cancellation and refund terms?
- What is the estimated delivery window? What happens if launch timing or the build specification changes?
- What are the vehicle and high-voltage battery warranty terms, and what exclusions apply?
- Where will routine servicing and high-voltage repairs be carried out? Are parts held locally, and what roadside assistance is included?
- Which driver-assistance, connectivity and software functions will be approved and active in New Zealand? Are any features market- or subscription-dependent?
- What charging connector, charging rate and charging equipment apply to the New Zealand vehicle? What home-charging setup does the dealer recommend?
- Can the dealer provide the final New Zealand specification sheet, warranty document and order terms before taking a deposit?
Until those details are available, treat any deposit or delivery discussion as dependent on the retailer’s written terms rather than an assurance that the announced target year guarantees delivery.
