The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate on September 16, 2026, and Vice Chair Philip Jefferson said future decisions would depend on economic data and risks. Another senior Fed official said an additional increase late in the year might be appropriate under his own forecast. For households, the practical takeaway is to compare actual borrowing and savings terms rather than make a financial decision based on a prediction about the next Fed move.
Will the Fed raise rates again in October?
It remains uncertain. The latest formal action was a 25-basis-point increase on September 16, which put the federal-funds target range at 3.75%–4.00%. The Federal Open Market Committee approved the move unanimously, citing solid economic activity and inflation that remained elevated. The Fed said the increase supported a timelier return of inflation to its 2% goal. Read the September 16 FOMC statement.

On October 1, Fed Vice Chair Philip N. Jefferson said future policy adjustments should be based on data trends, the evolving outlook and the balance of risks. That is a conditional, data-dependent statement—not a promise to hold rates at the next meeting. Jefferson said August 12-month PCE inflation was 3.4%, and described inflation risks as tilted upward while activity and employment risks appeared roughly balanced. He also stressed that his views were his own, not necessarily those of the FOMC. Read Jefferson’s October 1 speech.

There is also a counterpoint to any assumption that officials favor a pause: on September 29, New York Fed President John C. Williams said one more increase late in the year might be appropriate if the economy followed his forecast. He added that there was no need for urgency after September’s move and that policymakers had time to gather information. This was Williams’s individual outlook, not a committee decision. The Fed also released economic projections with the September decision. Those projections reflect individual participants’ assessments; they do not bind the committee to a particular action at its next meeting. See the September projections release.
What a Fed rate increase can mean for your money
The federal-funds rate does not directly set every interest rate consumers pay or earn. The effects depend on the product: variable-rate debt can adjust relatively quickly, deposit providers set their own yields, and longer-term borrowing costs respond to broader market forces. The Associated Press explains the consumer effects of Fed policy in its September 16 consumer-finance report.

Credit cards and other variable-rate debt
Most credit-card APRs are variable and tied to the prime rate, which generally responds quickly to changes in the Fed’s benchmark. If you carry a balance, your borrowing cost may change following policy moves, depending on your card agreement and the timing of rate adjustments. Check your statement or card terms for the APR formula and how changes are applied.
A balance-transfer offer may help some borrowers reduce interest, but the headline promotional rate is only one part of the cost. Compare the transfer fee, introductory period, APR after the offer ends, eligibility requirements and a realistic payoff schedule. It is only useful if the terms and repayment plan fit your circumstances.

Savings accounts and certificates of deposit
The Fed does not set consumer savings-account or CD rates. Banks and other providers choose their own rates, and deposit yields may respond differently to policy changes depending on competition and product terms. There is no single current national APY established here, so compare live offers directly rather than relying on a general rate forecast.
For a savings account, compare APY, minimum balance requirements and access to your money. For a CD, also compare the term and early-withdrawal penalty. A variable-rate account generally preserves access and flexibility; a CD can lock a rate for its stated term, subject to its withdrawal rules.

Mortgages
Mortgage rates do not mechanically track the federal-funds rate. They are influenced by inflation, Fed policy, bond-market expectations and longer-term yields, including the 10-year Treasury yield. A Fed hold by itself therefore would not guarantee that mortgage rates fall.

If you are shopping for a mortgage, compare dated lender quotes for the same loan amount and term. Look beyond the advertised rate to points, fees, fixed or adjustable terms, monthly payment and total interest. A quote can change as market conditions and your borrower profile change.
Quick Recap
How to make a decision while the outlook is uncertain
- For revolving debt: Check your current APR, balance and card terms. If considering a balance transfer, calculate the fee and whether you can repay the balance before the promotional period ends; compare the post-promotion APR as well.
- For cash savings: Compare current APYs and access rules across providers. For CDs, weigh the offered rate against the term, minimums and early-withdrawal penalty.
- For a home loan: Request current quotes and compare the full cost, not just the rate. Consider whether the loan’s fixed or adjustable structure fits how long you expect to keep it and the payment risk you can manage.
- For any major financial choice: Use the terms available to you now and your own time horizon, not a forecast that the Fed will hold or raise rates. Product rates, fees and eligibility vary.
