A PlayStation 5 is designed for PS4 backward compatibility, not PS2 or PS3 discs. Older games that appear on a newer console may instead be digital classics, remasters, remakes, or streamed versions. Some selected classics have higher output resolution or improved frame rates, while others preserve the original presentation. Check the exact game listing, edition and country before buying or subscribing.
The direct answer
“Backward compatible” does not mean that every older PlayStation game runs unchanged on a current console. Sony’s PS5 support guidance covers the overwhelming majority of PS4 games and states that PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. You therefore cannot put a PS3 disc into a PS5 and expect the original game to launch. See PlayStation’s backward-compatibility guidance for the supported scope.

Access to a PS2- or PS3-era title on a newer system normally comes through one of four routes:
- A separately listed digital classic that runs locally on the console.
- A remaster with altered rendering, assets, controls or other technical changes.
- A remake that rebuilds part or all of the game.
- Cloud streaming through an eligible PlayStation Plus catalog listing.
Those routes are not interchangeable. A digital classic can retain the original game content while changing its output resolution or frame pacing. A remaster or remake can change the art and technology substantially. Streaming can add network-dependent image quality and input delay. Sony has said that some classic games have improved frame rates and higher-quality resolution compared with their original launch versions; the statement is selective, not a promise for every PS2 or PS3 title. The wording appears in the May 23, 2022 announcement, “UPDATE: Your guide to the all-new PlayStation Plus”.

What “original graphics and performance” actually covers
Game content and assets
Characters, levels, animation, sound, physics and game rules can remain substantially the same even when a newer release changes how the image is displayed. Calling a version “the original” is therefore incomplete unless you specify whether you mean the original assets and logic or the original presentation.
Resolution and image output
A classic may use the same underlying artwork but be rendered at a higher internal resolution, upscaled by the console, or output with cleaner filtering. That can make edges and menus look sharper without turning the game into a remaster. Conversely, a streamed copy may be rendered remotely and compressed before it reaches your screen.
Frame rate and frame pacing
Frame rate is separate from resolution. A title that originally targeted a particular frame rate might receive an improvement in a supported classic release, while another title keeps its old cap or exhibits the same performance behavior. The official announcements do not provide a complete, current per-game table of original and newer-console frame rates, so avoid assigning a number unless the individual listing or technical documentation does so.

Responsiveness and streaming quality
Local play is limited mainly by the game and console. Streaming adds the quality of your broadband connection, the service’s encoding and the distance to its data center. A game can therefore have unchanged game logic but feel less responsive than a disc or downloaded copy.
How each access route affects the result
| Version or route | Where it runs | What may change | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS3 disc | PS3 hardware | Original disc presentation on compatible PS3 hardware | Do not assume the disc is readable on PS5; PS5 disc support is limited to the documented PS4 scope. |
| Digital classic | Locally on a supported PS4 or PS5 listing | Selected titles may have higher-quality resolution or improved frame rates | The exact store listing, edition and regional availability |
| Remaster | As a newer, separately released game | Rendering, textures, resolution, frame rate, controls or other presentation elements may be changed | Whether the product is labeled a remaster and which features its publisher lists |
| Remake | As a rebuilt release | Assets, technology, level presentation and sometimes gameplay can differ substantially | Whether you are buying the remake rather than the original-generation release |
| Cloud-streamed classic | Remote servers through an eligible PlayStation Plus catalog entry | Image quality and responsiveness depend on the network and supported streaming resolution | Streaming eligibility, subscription tier, region and connection quality |
What a PS5 can and cannot do with PS2 and PS3 games
PS3 discs
The practical answer for a PS3 disc is no: the PS5 does not provide general PS3 disc compatibility. If your copy is physical, keep a compatible PS3 or look for a separately sold digital version. Buying a PS5 alone does not convert that disc into a supported license.
PS2-era titles
Some PS2-era games have appeared as downloadable classics, remasters or remakes. PlayStation’s 2022 service announcement also described streaming access to original-generation titles through the Premium tier in supported markets. That announcement describes the service structure at launch; it is not a guarantee that every named title remains available today. Search the current store or catalog in your country and read the product label before assuming that a listing is a direct, unchanged version.
PS3-era classics
The current United States PlayStation Plus catalog page says that classic PS3 games in the Classics Catalog are available via streaming only. In practice, that means an eligible listing is not a downloadable PS3 game file for local execution on your PS5. Catalog membership can change, and the same title may not be offered in every country. The current US catalog overview is at PlayStation Plus games catalog.

Enhancements are title-specific, not a system-wide guarantee
PlayStation’s May 23, 2022 announcement says that “some titles will show improved frame rates and higher-quality resolution compared to their original launch versions.” The limiting word is some. It does not establish a universal enhancement mode for all PS2 and PS3 games, nor does it specify one resolution or frame-rate target for the entire catalog.
For an individual game, treat “classic,” “remastered” and “remake” as different product descriptions. A classic listing may preserve the original game while applying selected technical improvements. A remaster is an intentionally modified release. A remake may replace the original technology and assets. If the listing does not state the resolution, frame rate or enhancement features, the official general support pages do not justify inventing those specifications.
Streaming requirements and their effect on image quality
PlayStation’s Classics Catalog support page lists a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for streaming PlayStation Plus games. It says 15 Mbps is needed for 1080p streaming when the game supports that resolution. These are service requirements, not claims about the game’s original render resolution or frame rate. If your connection falls, the service can reduce the delivered resolution. Details are in How to access the PlayStation Plus classics catalog on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles.
| Streaming figure | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | Minimum broadband speed identified by PlayStation for streaming PlayStation Plus games |
| 15 Mbps | Speed identified for 1080p streaming when the particular game supports 1080p |
A fast connection cannot make a game render at a higher native frame rate than the service provides. It can, however, reduce buffering and make it more likely that the stream maintains its intended output quality. Wired networking or a strong, uncongested Wi-Fi connection is preferable when responsiveness matters.

For streamed PS3 games, the support page maps Select to the left side of the DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad and Start to the right side. You must click the corresponding side; tapping the pad does not activate those functions. This is a service control mapping, not evidence that the game has been remade for modern controls.

PlayStation Plus Premium includes cloud streaming and the Classics Catalog in the United States plan overview, but catalog access is market- and title-dependent. The current US plan information is available at PlayStation Plus. Do not transfer a US catalog result to another country without checking that country’s store.
Before you rely on a listing, confirm all of the following:

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- Your country or PlayStation Store region.
- The exact edition and platform shown on the product page.
- Whether the game is downloadable, stream-only or both.
- The PlayStation Plus tier required, if any.
- Whether the title is still in the catalog on the date you plan to play it.
- Any stated resolution, frame-rate or enhancement notes.
How to check one specific game before you buy or subscribe
- Start with the exact title. Include the game’s subtitle, region and edition. A PS2 original, a later remaster and a remake can have separate store pages.
- Read the platform label. Confirm that the listing is for PS5, PS4, streaming or another supported platform rather than assuming your physical copy transfers.
- Identify the delivery method. Look for download, stream or both. A PS3 classic in the current US Classics Catalog is described as streaming-only.
- Check the catalog and subscription requirement. A Premium benefit applies only where the title and service are offered in your market.
- Look for technical notes. Use title-specific statements about enhanced resolution, frame rate, widescreen support or other changes. If none are published, describe the technical behavior as unconfirmed rather than assigning a number.
- Choose the version that matches your priority. Select a local digital classic when avoiding network variability matters; choose a remaster or remake when updated presentation is the goal; use streaming when immediate access is more important than local ownership.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a PS5 reads every PlayStation disc
PS5 backward compatibility is not a blanket promise for all prior generations. Check the supported platform before purchasing a console for a disc collection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCalling every catalog entry an untouched original
A catalog label can represent a supported classic, a remaster, a remake or a streamed copy. Read the product description and delivery method instead of inferring the release type from the game’s age.
Treating “1080p streaming” as the game’s native resolution
The 15 Mbps figure describes a streaming condition when the game supports 1080p. It does not document the original PS2 or PS3 render resolution, and it does not prove that every title streams at 1080p.
Expecting one enhancement policy for the whole catalog
The official wording covers selected titles. Enhancement behavior must be established per game, and the general support pages do not publish a complete title-by-title resolution and frame-rate comparison.
Ignoring catalog changes
Subscription catalogs and regional eligibility can change. Recheck the live listing when you are ready to play, especially if your decision depends on streaming-only access.

PS2 and PS3 games do not automatically keep their original graphics and performance on newer consoles. A PS5 does not play PS3 discs, and newer-console access usually means a separately supported digital classic, remaster, remake or stream. Some selected classics improve resolution or frame rate, while others may preserve more of the original presentation. The only reliable way to know what you will receive is to check the current game listing, delivery method, region and title-specific technical notes.
