Rockstar currently lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the console platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar’s official announcement does not list PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch or any other platform, so owners should plan around the currently announced consoles rather than assume compatibility from older games.
The Xbox wording covers both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Rockstar has not published a supported-source comparison of their resolution, frame rate, graphics settings or other performance characteristics, and the available platform information does not establish that either console is technically identical to the other.

Which consoles are officially supported?
Rockstar’s current customer-support FAQ, updated August 18, 2026, says: “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” Its August 6, 2026 Newswire announcement uses the same platform family and states that the game is coming to those consoles. These are the platforms Rockstar has formally announced.
| Console | Current official status | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Supported platform | Rockstar lists PS5 for pre-order and release. |
| Xbox Series X | Included in the Xbox Series X|S family | Rockstar names the Series X|S family but does not publish separate Series X performance specifications. |
| Xbox Series S | Included in the Xbox Series X|S family | Rockstar names the Series X|S family but does not publish separate Series S performance specifications. |
| PlayStation 4 | Not listed | The current platform FAQ does not announce a PS4 version. |
| Xbox One | Not listed | The current platform FAQ does not announce an Xbox One version. |
| PC or Nintendo Switch | Not listed | No version for these platforms is identified in the cited official platform statement. |
“Not listed” is the precise qualification. It means Rockstar has not announced that platform in the current information; it is not a prediction that no additional version can ever be announced.

What does “Xbox Series X|S” mean?
One platform family, two consoles
Xbox Series X|S is Microsoft’s naming for the current-generation Xbox family. Rockstar uses the family designation in its FAQ and announcement instead of publishing a separate compatibility paragraph for each model. Therefore, a buyer with either a Series X or Series S is looking at the announced Xbox version of GTA VI.
Do Series X and Series S have the same performance?
That has not been established by Rockstar’s cited materials. The support FAQ does not state resolution targets, frame-rate modes, texture settings, installation size, ray-tracing features or other differences between the two Xbox models. Do not treat the shared platform name as proof of identical visual quality or frame rate. Wait for Rockstar’s technical specifications or detailed console-performance information before making a performance-based choice.
Is GTA 6 coming to PS4 or Xbox One?
The current announcement does not include either older console
Rockstar’s current platform list names PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. PS4 and Xbox One do not appear in that list, so owners of those consoles should not buy a listed PS5 or Xbox copy expecting it to run natively on their existing hardware.
Why older Rockstar games cause confusion
Rockstar’s November 2020 announcement about backward compatibility explains how selected older Rockstar titles can be played on PS5 and Xbox Series hardware. For compatible games, disc owners can insert a disc into a disc-equipped PS5 or Xbox Series X, while digital owners can access eligible titles connected to their account. The announcement specifically excludes disc use on a PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S because those systems have no disc drive.

That backward-compatibility information concerns older games. It does not announce GTA VI for PS4 or Xbox One, and it does not turn GTA VI into a previous-generation title. Compatibility of an older game should never be used as evidence that a new game will run on an older console.
When is GTA 6 scheduled to release?
Rockstar’s latest cited announcement, “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,” dated August 6, 2026, gives November 19, 2026 as the announced release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is the current date to use when planning a purchase, while recognizing that an announced date can change.
| Announcement | Release wording | How it fits the current schedule |
|---|---|---|
| December 5, 2023 | “Coming 2025” | Earlier target, superseded by later announcements. |
| May 2, 2025 | May 26, 2026 | Later target, superseded by the August 2026 announcement. |
| August 6, 2026 | November 19, 2026 | Latest cited official date. |
The latest date is documented in Rockstar’s Newswire announcement at rockstargames.com/newswire/article/9k2kaa1o3297k9/grand-theft-auto-vi-an-extended-look. Older dates should not be presented as current.
Which editions are available?
Rockstar’s platform-and-editions FAQ identifies two versions. The difference described there is the included content, not a different console compatibility list.

| Edition | What Rockstar says it includes | Upgrade option |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | The game | Owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade through the PlayStation or Microsoft store after redeeming the Standard Edition code. |
| Ultimate Edition | The game plus the Ultimate Edition Upgrade | The upgrade is included rather than purchased separately. |
Both editions must be matched to the console platform on which you intend to play. A PS5 purchase is not a license for Xbox, and an Xbox purchase is not a license for PlayStation.
Does the physical version contain a disc?
No. Rockstar describes the physical product as a boxed download code and explicitly says that a disc will not be included in the box. The code is redeemed to download the game digitally. Rockstar says this format supports pre-loading, so “physical” refers to the retail box and code rather than disc-based installation.
Check the product description carefully before ordering. A box illustration or “physical edition” label does not mean there is a Blu-ray or Xbox disc inside. Keep the code, packaging and purchase receipt until redemption and installation are complete.
How should you buy and redeem the game?
- Confirm your console. Choose the PS5 version for a PlayStation 5, or the Xbox Series X|S version for either current Xbox Series model.
- Choose the edition. Select Standard if you want the base game, or Ultimate if you want the included Ultimate Edition Upgrade.
- Use an appropriate store or retailer. Rockstar lists the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Rockstar Store and select retailers as purchase channels. Availability depends on country; check the listing for your market.
- Verify the account region. Rockstar advises buying and playing from a retailer in the country associated with your platform account. Code-redemption rules vary by region, so do not assume a code bought abroad will activate everywhere.
- Redeem the code on the matching platform. On PlayStation, use the PlayStation Store account that will play the game. On Xbox, redeem through the Microsoft account used on the Series console.
- Pre-load when the platform makes it available. A boxed code is still a digital download, so allow time for the download and any required updates before release day.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which console should an existing owner choose?
If you already own a PS5
Buy the PS5 edition through the PlayStation Store or a retailer selling a PS5 code. The available sources do not identify a platform advantage, so the practical factors are your existing hardware, your PlayStation account and where you keep your games.
If you already own an Xbox Series X or Series S
Buy the Xbox Series X|S edition through the Xbox Store or a retailer selling an Xbox code. Rockstar treats the two Xbox models as one announced platform family, but has not published a technical comparison between them.
If you own only a PS4 or Xbox One
The currently announced version requires one of the listed current-generation consoles. Because neither PS4 nor Xbox One appears in Rockstar’s platform FAQ, do not assume your older console will run the game. If you decide to upgrade, choose the console that fits your existing account, digital library and preferred store; the cited sources do not justify calling one platform the universally better choice.

The official platform and edition materials establish compatibility, release timing, editions and purchase format. They do not provide named frame-rate targets, resolutions, graphics modes, console-specific visual comparisons, storage requirements or a Series X-versus-Series S benchmark. Any article or listing that supplies those figures needs a separate, attributable technical source.
This distinction matters when deciding whether to upgrade hardware. Compatibility answers “Can I play on this announced platform?” It does not answer “What resolution or frame rate will I get?” Rockstar may publish those details later, but they are not part of the current platform statement.
Common purchasing and compatibility mistakes
- Buying the wrong console code: A PS5 code and an Xbox code are separate products. Confirm the platform before paying.
- Expecting a disc: The physical box contains a download code, not a disc.
- Assuming backward compatibility works both ways: Older games can be compatible with newer consoles; that does not make GTA VI playable on PS4 or Xbox One.
- Importing a cheap code without checking: Regional activation restrictions can prevent redemption. Match the retailer country to your platform-account country where possible.
- Assuming Series X and Series S performance is identical: Rockstar has not stated that. Treat the shared platform label as compatibility information only.
- Relying on old release dates: The 2025 and May 26, 2026 targets were earlier plans. Use the latest Rockstar announcement when checking the schedule.
Bottom line
GTA VI is currently announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Rockstar giving November 19, 2026 as the latest release date. PS4 and Xbox One are not on the current platform list. The Xbox Series X and Series S share the announced platform designation, but Rockstar has not published performance differences. If you buy a physical copy, expect a boxed download code with no disc, and verify the platform and account region before redeeming it.
