Will Gen Alpha Use Voice Notes at Work Instead of Email? What the Evidence Shows

There is no evidence that Gen Alpha will stop emailing their bosses when they enter the workforce. A 2024 UK survey found that many children aged 8–12 had used voice notes and many had never sent an email, but it did not ask what they would use at work. A separate 2026 experiment with working-age adults found that voice notes can reduce misunderstandings in some situations—not that they will replace email.

What the Gen Alpha survey actually found

Generationally Speaking’s 2024 Communication Habits and Preferences survey reported that 72% of its Gen Alpha respondents had ever left a voice note, while 62% had never sent an email. The Gen Alpha respondents were UK children aged 8–12. These are reports of whether they had done those things, not preferences about future workplace communication. Generationally Speaking’s survey

The survey covered 4,067 people aged 8 to over 78, according to the publisher. The detailed sampling information for the Gen Alpha subgroup is not established in the available account, so the percentages should not be treated as representative of all children, all countries, or future employees. What the workplace experiment says about voice notes

A 2026 peer-reviewed online experiment in Computers in Human Behavior Reports involved 793 working-age participants. It compared how people interpreted identically worded manager messages delivered by email or voice note across three manager–employee scenarios. Voice notes reduced negative interpretation bias when they reduced ambiguity. When ambiguity was not reduced, some groups could interpret a voice note more negatively. The experiment measured interpretation of hypothetical messages. It did not test Gen Alpha, actual workplace adoption, productivity, or whether employees will prefer voice notes over email in 2030. Its result supports using voice notes selectively where vocal cues clarify a short, conversational message—not treating them as a universal substitute.

The University of Oxford’s Wellbeing Research Centre summary likewise frames voice notes as potentially useful in selected conversations, rather than as a wholesale email replacement. Study co-author William Fleming said a short voice note “won’t solve every communication problem” and that it “should [not] replace email entirely”; in the tested short, conversational messages, reducing ambiguity could prevent needless misunderstandings, particularly in hybrid and geographically dispersed teams. When each channel is useful

The experiment directly supports considering ambiguity and tone; the other differences below are practical communication considerations, not outcomes measured by that study.

Need Voice note Email
Short, conversational message where tone may clarify intent Can convey vocal cues; useful when those cues reduce ambiguity. May leave tone open to interpretation.
Complex instructions, details, or a durable record Can be harder to scan, search, or refer back to precisely. Usually easier to skim, search, quote, and retain as a written record.
Recipient cannot listen immediately or needs an accessible format Depends on a suitable listening context and the recipient’s ability to use audio. Can be read when convenient and is easier to revisit visually.

For a decision, deadline, or multi-part instruction, written follow-up can preserve the details even if a voice note helps establish tone. For a brief, informal check-in, audio may be more natural when both people can listen and the message is clear.

What the 2028 voice-AI forecast does—and does not—show

A Fortune article published October 3, 2026, attributes a forecast to researchers at the London School of Economics and audiovisual technology company Jabra: voice AI could become the default way of working by 2028. That is a forecast about voice AI, not evidence that Gen Alpha will send voice notes to managers instead of email. The primary LSE/Jabra report and its methodology were not verified, so the forecast’s population, research design, and precise wording are not independently established here. Another projection, from IMA Research in January 2026, estimates that Gen Alpha could make up approximately one in seven global workers by 2030. It is a workforce-share projection, not a measured result or a prediction about which communication channels those workers will choose. IMA Research overview

What employers should prepare for

The UAE Government’s 2025 Generation Alpha report includes interpersonal skills such as collaboration and communication among future workforce skills. That points to a practical preparation strategy: help people communicate clearly across channels, rather than assuming one medium will displace another. UAE Government Generation Alpha report

  • Choose a channel that suits the message: use audio when vocal cues help with a short conversation, and written communication when precision, searchability, or a lasting record matters.
  • Make key actions and deadlines explicit, especially when a spoken message contains several details.
  • Agree on team norms so employees know which channels are appropriate, when a response is expected, and how important decisions are documented.
