For touch interaction with Mac windows, Apple documents a different setup: a compatible iPad used as a Sidecar display, with expanded touch interaction beginning in iPadOS 27 and macOS 27.
What “work well with a touchscreen” means on a MacBook Pro
There are two separate questions: whether an app runs on a Mac, and whether you can touch the Mac’s display to control it. Apple’s documentation addresses Mac app compatibility and alternative input methods, but does not say that the MacBook Pro’s built-in screen accepts touch.
A native Mac app designed for a pointer, keyboard and trackpad can be used with those inputs as usual. That does not make its controls touch-friendly, nor does it mean a finger can operate the built-in display. Apple’s guidance also does not establish general touch behavior for third-party external monitors connected to a MacBook Pro.
How well an app fits depends on its design
Native Mac apps
Judge a Mac app by the inputs it supports. Controls designed for clicking, menus and keyboard shortcuts can work normally with a Mac’s usual input devices; the absence of a supported touch display is a separate hardware limitation.

iPhone and iPad apps on Apple silicon
Some iPhone and iPad apps are available on Apple silicon Macs. In the Mac App Store, look for the labels “Designed for iPhone” or “Designed for iPad.” Availability is app-specific: developers can opt out, and an app may not be suitable for Mac if it depends on iOS-only hardware, unavailable frameworks, custom hardware, or extensive touch interaction that has no practical keyboard or other input equivalent. Apple’s developer guidance on running iOS apps in macOS explains these considerations.
Apple says common gestures such as pinch, scroll, rotate and zoom can map to trackpad gestures, and eligible apps can use Touch Alternatives for certain actions. These can provide a workable substitute for some touch-driven interactions, but they are not the same as tapping the MacBook Pro display. Apple notes that apps relying on single-finger touch or occasional multifinger gestures do not necessarily need to opt out of Mac availability.

Apple’s guidance for using iPhone and iPad apps on a Mac with Apple silicon gives holding Option while using the trackpad as an example of a touch alternative. Whether that is useful depends on the app and how it implements its gestures.
Touch a Mac display through Sidecar on a compatible iPad
Sidecar lets a compatible iPad serve as a second display for a Mac. Apple Support says expanded touch interaction with Mac windows and menus on the iPad is available beginning with iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. This means touching the iPad while it is being used with Sidecar—not touching the MacBook Pro’s built-in screen. Apple’s Sidecar setup and support guidance lists eligible devices and connection requirements.

Apple’s developer documentation describes how apps can receive direct Sidecar touches through gesture recognizers. That is guidance about touch on the Sidecar iPad, not evidence that a MacBook Pro panel or any arbitrary touch monitor supports direct touch. Check Apple’s current compatibility list for the exact Mac and iPad models and OS versions before relying on Sidecar.

- You use ordinary Mac apps: Expect them to work with the keyboard, trackpad and mouse inputs they already support; do not assume the built-in display is touch-enabled.
- You want to run an iPhone or iPad app: Check the Mac App Store’s device-design label and whether the app is available for Apple silicon. Touch Alternatives may help with some gestures, but app design and hardware dependencies affect the experience.
- You want to touch Mac windows: Use a compatible iPad with Sidecar and meet Apple’s stated device and OS requirements. It is a separate display workflow, not a touchscreen conversion for the MacBook Pro.
Apple’s sources offer qualitative compatibility guidance, not measured app-by-app performance or a percentage of apps that work well with touch. Without app-specific documentation or testing, it is not possible to promise that a particular app will feel natural under touch alternatives.
