No Microsoft acquisition of EA occurred. Electronic Arts announced that its acquisition by a consortium of PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners closed on August 4, 2026. That means there is no Microsoft-owned EA platform policy to assess.
EA’s closing announcement describes a business that continues to make and deliver games for internet-connected consoles, mobile devices, and PCs, but it does not promise that every EA title will remain on PlayStation. For a specific game, the reliable answer is its current official EA product information and PlayStation Store listing—not a general assumption based on who owns the company.

The direct answer: Microsoft did not buy EA
The question is conditional on an event that did not happen. EA’s official completion announcement says its acquisition closed on August 4, 2026, after stockholder approval, with PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners as the acquiring consortium. EA stockholders were to receive $210 in cash for each share, and EA common stock ceased trading and was delisted from Nasdaq at closing.

EA’s regulatory filing describes the same consortium as the merger counterparty. Under the structure described in that filing, EA remained the surviving company as a wholly owned subsidiary of the merger parent. Neither the announcement nor the filing identifies Microsoft as the buyer.

Because Microsoft is not EA’s owner, claims that Microsoft has already decided to remove EA games from PlayStation—or to keep all of them there—are unsupported. The remaining question is narrower: what does EA’s current ownership announcement actually say about platform availability, and how should players check a particular game?
What EA’s 2026 ownership announcement establishes

These details correct the ownership premise. They should not be treated as evidence of a complete publishing policy under the new owners.
What EA has—and has not—said about PlayStation
EA’s announcement characterizes the company as developing and delivering games, content, and online services for internet-connected consoles, mobile devices, and PCs. It names a broad portfolio that includes EA SPORTS FC, Battlefield, Apex Legends, The Sims, Madden NFL, College Football, Need for Speed, Dragon Age, Titanfall, and Plants vs. Zombies.

That language confirms a multi-platform business description, not a permanent promise for every platform or franchise. It does not say that every future EA release will launch on PlayStation, that every existing PlayStation game will receive updates indefinitely, or that no game could become exclusive elsewhere. A general statement about serving consoles cannot answer a title-specific distribution decision.
It is also important to separate three different questions:
- Is the game available now? This is a current catalog question answered by the game’s official page and the relevant PlayStation Store listing.
- Has a PlayStation version been confirmed for a future release? Look for a dated announcement, platform list, or store page from the publisher or platform holder.
- Will an unannounced or later game come to PlayStation? The available ownership announcement provides no reliable prediction.
EA reported approximately $7.5 billion in GAAP net revenue for fiscal year 2026 in its acquisition announcement. That is a company financial figure, not a measurement of PlayStation support and not a reason to infer where future games will ship.

Why ownership does not automatically determine platform availability
A parent company can change a game’s distribution strategy, but ownership alone does not reveal the decision. Publishers weigh existing contracts, development plans, online-service communities, installed audiences, licensing obligations, revenue expectations, and the cost of supporting multiple platforms. Those factors can differ from one franchise to another.
Existing releases also have a different status from unannounced projects. A game already sold on PlayStation may have ongoing support obligations, downloadable content plans, or a large connected-player base. A new project without a public platform announcement has no equivalent public commitment. Even within one publisher, the outcome can vary by game.
For that reason, neither the consortium’s identity nor EA’s description of its business can be converted into a blanket rule such as “all EA games will stay on PlayStation” or “all EA games will become exclusive.” The evidence supports neither statement.

What Microsoft’s previous gaming deals can—and cannot—show
ZeniMax: Microsoft described a case-by-case approach
In its response to the Federal Trade Commission’s Activision case, Microsoft described its treatment of future ZeniMax titles as case by case. The filing said some planned new games would be Xbox and PC exclusives, while the existing multiplayer games Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online continued on PlayStation.
This is useful context because it shows that Microsoft has not applied one identical rule to every acquired catalog. It is not a neutral industry standard, and it is not a binding promise about EA. It is Microsoft’s characterization in a legal filing about a different acquisition and a different group of games.

For its separate Activision transaction, Microsoft’s 2023 fact sheet described a ten-year agreement to keep Call of Duty available on PlayStation. Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith said: “One of the things we’re being very clear about as we move forward with the regulatory review of this acquisition is that great titles like Call of Duty from Activision Blizzard today will continue to be available on the Sony PlayStation.”

That commitment was franchise-specific and tied to the Activision transaction. It should not be generalized into a guarantee for EA games, Battlefield, EA SPORTS FC, or any other EA series. The FTC matter’s case page is listed as closed and was last updated May 22, 2025; that procedural status does not establish an EA platform policy.

How to check whether a particular EA game is on PlayStation
Use a title-specific check whenever the answer matters, especially before buying a console, pre-ordering, or relying on a rumored release.
- Identify the exact game and edition. Record the title, platform generation, and whether you mean the base game, a remake, an expansion, or a cloud service.
- Check the current official EA product information. Look for the platforms listed for that exact title. Do not substitute a franchise homepage or an older announcement for the game’s current page.
- Check the PlayStation Store in your region. Store availability can vary by country, generation, edition, age rating, and release date. A listing is stronger evidence of current sale than a general statement about EA’s portfolio.
- Separate release confirmation from future speculation. A dated platform announcement or active store page supports a confirmed release. A rumor, job listing, interview about another game, or historical precedent does not.
- Check service status and support expectations. For an online game, verify whether the listing and publisher notices address servers, cross-play, updates, or a planned sunset. Availability to purchase is not the same as indefinite online support.
- Recheck near launch or a major update. Platform information is volatile. A current listing is more useful than an old article that predates a release change, ownership change, or service announcement.
If Microsoft acquired EA in the future, what outcomes would be possible?
A future Microsoft acquisition would still require a game-by-game analysis. The following scenarios describe what evidence would matter; they are not predictions of what Microsoft would choose.

If a future deal included a written, time-limited commitment for a named franchise, that commitment would answer only the scope stated in its terms. It would not automatically cover other EA properties.
Statements from the companies, read in context
EA CEO Andrew Wilson said in the August 4, 2026 closing announcement: “We’re entering this next chapter from a position of strength with partners who share our vision and ambition.” The quote describes EA’s ownership transition and does not promise PlayStation availability.
Likewise, Brad Smith’s Call of Duty statement concerns Microsoft’s regulatory review of the Activision transaction. Treating either statement as an EA-wide platform guarantee would extend it beyond what the speaker and transaction addressed.
