Will Destiny 2 Progress and Purchases Carry Over to Bungie’s Next Destiny Game?

Short answer: Bungie has not announced whether Destiny 2 characters, progression, gear, cosmetics, downloadable content or purchases will carry over to another Destiny game. As of October 13, 2026, its official statements confirm that Destiny remains part of Bungie’s future, but they do not describe a sequel account system or a migration policy. Treat transfer as unknown rather than assumed.

That uncertainty matters because “progress” and “purchases” are not one thing. Character data, earned items, paid expansions, Season Passes, Silver and Rewards Passes already follow different rules inside Destiny 2. Those existing rules cannot be used to predict what will happen in a separate future release.

What Bungie has actually confirmed

Destiny has a future, but no transfer plan is attached to it

In its official “The Next Chapter for Bungie” post, Bungie says, “All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.” The post discusses more stories and new worlds, and describes restoring vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations and raids as a first step toward new stories and games.

That is a statement of direction, not a specification for a new game. It does not name a future title, launch date, platform list, account architecture or rule for importing Destiny 2 data. There is therefore no official basis for promising that a Guardian, triumph, collection, cosmetic or purchase will appear in a later game.

  • To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home

The wording also should not be read as confirmation that a traditional sequel is launching on a particular schedule. Bungie establishes that Destiny is still an important part of its plans, while leaving the form of those stories and games open. Until a product announcement supplies technical and commercial terms, “the next Destiny game” is a description of a possible future release, not a confirmed transfer destination.

Destiny 2 is continuing in a reduced update state

Bungie’s May 2026 announcement, “Destiny 2: Every End is a New Beginning,” said the studio would begin incubating its next games. It also said June 9, 2026 would bring Destiny 2’s final planned live-service content update and that Destiny 2 would remain playable.

A later Bungie support guide says there are no planned content updates after Update 9.7.0, while allowing that a health or stability hotfix could still be required. “Final planned live-service content update” is not the same as a shutdown date, a data export or a sequel-import announcement. It describes the expected update cadence for the existing game.

Destiny 2 therefore remains playable under its current account and entitlement rules. Nothing in the May announcement or the Update 9.7.0 support guidance says that characters will be copied, that purchases will be exchanged for credits, or that a future title will read the Destiny 2 database.

Cross Save is not the same as moving progress to a new game

What Cross Save does

The Destiny 2 Cross Save Guide covers access to Destiny 2 characters on multiple platforms. You choose one active Destiny 2 account, and that account’s characters can be used on the linked platforms. Cross Save does not merge two accounts into one, combine their characters or create a universal archive for future games.

This distinction is easy to miss. If a character appears on a console and a PC after Cross Save is enabled, the same Destiny 2 account is being accessed in two places. Nothing in that feature indicates that a different game will read the account or inherit its history. Cross Save is a platform-access feature within Destiny 2, not a cross-game migration announcement.

For example, linking a PlayStation account and a Steam account does not combine the items earned on two separate Destiny 2 accounts. One account is selected as active; the other account’s characters are not merged into it. Changing that arrangement also does not create a transferable package for a future release. Any later migration policy would need to define its own source-account and eligibility rules.

Licenses and passes already have account-specific limits

The same guide says platform DLC licenses do not transfer between platform accounts. It also says Season Passes bind to the first Destiny 2 account used after purchase. Those statements explain how Destiny 2 handles ownership today; they do not establish what a future Destiny release will recognize.

Cross Save can make a character available on several platforms, but it does not make every platform store license universal. A player may still need to own an expansion on each platform where that expansion is accessed. That current distinction is a warning against treating “I can play my character elsewhere” as proof that every entitlement follows the character.

How current Destiny 2 purchases work

Before asking whether a purchase will carry over, identify which purchase it is. Bungie documents separate behavior for expansions, Silver, items bought with Silver, Season Passes and Rewards Passes.

Category Current Destiny 2 rule Future-game treatment
DLC licenses, such as Beyond Light or Shadowkeep The license does not move between platform accounts through Cross Save. You need the license on each platform where you want to access that DLC. Not stated by Bungie.
Silver Silver is bound to the Destiny account and Destiny release that purchased it. It cannot be transferred or gifted to another account or release. Silver bought on an Active Account can be used only on the purchasing platform. Not stated by Bungie.
Items bought with Silver Items purchased with Silver on the Active Account can be used on any platform, subject to Destiny 2’s account setup. Not stated by Bungie.
Season Passes A Season Pass binds to the first Destiny 2 account used after purchase. Cross Save does not turn separate account purchases into one shared entitlement. Not stated by Bungie.
Rewards Passes Bungie’s current Rewards Pass FAQ says Rewards Passes can be shared across platforms on accounts with Cross Save enabled. Not stated by Bungie.

The “future-game treatment” column is deliberately unknown, not a prediction. A license that works across platforms inside Destiny 2 is not automatically a license for another release, and a currency restriction in Destiny 2 does not prove that a future title will use the same wallet.

There is also an important difference between currency and an item bought with currency. Bungie’s Silver guide distinguishes the Silver balance, which remains tied to the purchasing account and release, from items purchased with Silver, which can be used on any platform on the Active Account. A future policy could preserve one category and exclude the other, so a general promise about “purchases” would still need detailed terms.

What “progress carrying over” could mean

If Bungie eventually announces an import system, look for separate answers to each of these categories rather than a single yes-or-no sentence.

Character and account progression

Progress could mean a character’s class, level, subclass unlocks, quests, triumphs, achievements or account-wide reputation. An announcement may preserve some of these, reset them, or offer account-bound rewards instead of a direct character import. Until Bungie defines the destination account and data format, none of those outcomes is confirmed.

Ask whether a transfer happens automatically when the same Bungie account signs in, requires an opt-in claim, or applies only once. Also check whether inactive accounts, accounts with Cross Save disabled, or accounts linked to multiple platforms have different treatment. These are practical eligibility questions, not details that can be inferred from today’s Cross Save screen.

Earned gear and cosmetics

Weapons, armor, ornaments, shaders, emblems and other collectibles may be treated differently from gameplay progression. A future game could recognize ownership of selected cosmetics without importing the original item, or it could start with a new collection. Ask whether the rule covers all earned items, only account-wide items, or a limited set of commemorative rewards.

“Earned” and “purchased” may also be separate categories. A raid weapon, a triumph emblem and a store ornament could each have a different outcome. Unless Bungie lists the item classes that qualify, a player should not assume that a complete Destiny 2 collection becomes a complete collection in a new game.

Paid expansions and passes

Previous DLC access is not the same as ownership of a new game’s content. A future title could require a new edition, grant a migration entitlement, or provide no access to earlier expansions. Season Passes and Rewards Passes also need their own terms because Bungie already gives them different treatment within Destiny 2.

An expansion license might unlock only its original Destiny 2 activities, while a new release could sell a separate campaign or annual pass. A pass that is shareable across Destiny 2 platforms today could still expire with its season or remain limited to the original release. Only explicit product terms can answer those questions.

Premium currency

Silver is especially important to verify separately. Bungie’s current guide ties Silver to both the purchasing Destiny account and the Destiny release, and limits where newly purchased Silver can be used. Do not assume an unspent balance, purchased item or wallet will be recognized in another release unless Bungie says so explicitly.

Players should distinguish an unspent Silver balance from an ornament, emote or other item already bought with Silver. The current rules do not treat those as interchangeable, and a future game could apply a different rule to each. Keep purchase confirmations if you may need to establish which account and release received the transaction.

Platforms and regions

Even if an import exists, it could be limited by platform, region, edition or account-linking status. A policy should identify whether the source account must be active, whether Cross Save must be enabled, and whether purchases made on one platform require a second license on another.

Platform availability can matter independently of progress. A player might be allowed to bring an account-based cosmetic to a new game on console but still need to buy that game’s platform edition. Regional storefront rules, account changes and launch windows could create additional exceptions, so read the eligibility dates and platform list rather than relying on a headline summary.

What Destiny 2 players should do now

  1. Keep the account that owns your characters. Cross Save uses one active account and does not merge accounts. Avoid unlinking or rearranging platform connections simply because you expect a future transfer; no such transfer has been announced.
  2. Record your account and platform details. Note which Bungie account is active, which platforms are linked, and where major DLC, Silver and pass purchases were made. This information will help you interpret any eligibility rule later.
  3. Separate receipts by purchase type. Keep records for expansions, Season Passes, Rewards Passes, Silver and Silver-purchased items. Bungie’s current policies do not treat those categories identically.
  4. Do not buy or retain currency based on a transfer assumption. Destiny 2 remains playable, but Bungie has not promised that Silver or another entitlement will be accepted by a future game.
  5. Do not delete characters to “make room” for migration. No announced system says that deleting or recreating a Guardian improves eligibility. Preserve the account state you care about until official instructions explain any transfer process.
  6. Use Bungie’s official announcements and help pages for any change. A store listing, datamined menu or community interpretation is not a transfer policy. Look for terms that name the source game, destination game, eligible account, platforms, dates and exceptions.

How to evaluate a future carryover announcement

When Bungie publishes concrete terms, check the details in this order:

  1. Eligibility: Is every Destiny 2 account eligible, or only accounts active before a cutoff date? Are suspended, merged or platform-linked accounts handled differently?
  2. Progress scope: Does “progress” include characters, quests, triumphs, achievements, collections, titles and reputation, or only a subset?
  3. Item scope: Are earned weapons, armor, ornaments, shaders and emblems imported, converted into unlocks, or excluded?
  4. Purchase scope: Are DLC licenses, Season Passes, Rewards Passes and store items treated as separate entitlements?
  5. Currency scope: Does the policy mention Silver by name, and does it cover unspent currency, previously purchased items, or both?
  6. Platform and timing: Which platforms qualify, when must accounts be linked, and is the transfer a one-time claim or an ongoing entitlement?
  7. Reversal and support: Can an account be changed after migration, and what evidence will support require if an entitlement is missing?

Also check whether the announcement distinguishes a reward for longtime players from a literal import. A commemorative emblem or cosmetic granted for having played Destiny 2 would be recognition, not proof that characters, quests, gear or currency transferred. Likewise, a bundle that includes a copy of a future game would not necessarily include earlier DLC licenses.

Until those questions have official answers, the safe way to manage Destiny 2 is to treat its characters and purchases as belonging to Destiny 2. Bungie has confirmed a continuing future for the Destiny universe and has described Destiny 2’s planned update endpoint, but it has not published a carryover policy for another Destiny game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Destiny 2 progress carry over to Bungie’s next Destiny game?

Bungie has not announced whether characters, levels, quests, triumphs, achievements, collections or reputation will transfer. Its statements confirm more Destiny stories and games are planned, but provide no migration rules.

Will my Destiny 2 purchases transfer?

No transfer policy has been announced. DLC licenses, Season Passes, Rewards Passes, Silver and items bought with Silver already have different rules inside Destiny 2, so each category would need separate confirmation.

Will my Silver transfer?

There is no confirmed future-game Silver transfer. Bungie currently binds Silver to the Destiny account and Destiny release that purchased it and says it cannot be transferred or gifted to another account or release.

Is Cross Save the same as carrying progress into a new game?

No. Cross Save lets one active Destiny 2 account access its characters across linked platforms. It does not merge accounts or establish that another game can import the account.

Does Destiny 2 remain playable after the final planned update?

Yes. Bungie’s May 2026 announcement said Destiny 2 would remain playable, and its Update 9.7.0 support guidance says no further content updates are planned, while allowing for possible health or stability hotfixes.

Do Destiny 2 DLC licenses work on every platform through Cross Save?

No. Bungie says platform DLC licenses do not transfer between platform accounts. You need the applicable license on each platform where you want to access that downloadable content.

Are Rewards Passes shared across platforms?

Bungie’s current Rewards Pass FAQ says they can be shared across platforms when Cross Save is enabled. That is a Destiny 2 platform-sharing rule, not confirmation that Rewards Passes will work in another game.

Should I change my Cross Save setup before a future game launches?

There is no announced transfer benefit to doing so. Keep the active account that contains your characters, avoid assuming accounts will merge, and wait for official eligibility and linking instructions.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Bungie says Destiny has more stories and games ahead, but as of October 13, 2026 it has not said whether Destiny 2 progress, gear, cosmetics, DLC, Silver or passes will carry over. Cross Save only provides multi-platform access to one Destiny 2 account. Keep your account and purchase records intact, and treat any future transfer as unknown until Bungie publishes specific terms.
