Search engines now include AI-generated summaries, and people can also ask conversational assistants. For a business, the practical response is to make its useful pages accessible and worth finding—not to abandon SEO or buy a promise of guaranteed AI recommendations.
Are people replacing Google with AI?
Not on the evidence available here. AI-generated summaries are appearing on conventional search pages, while standalone assistants offer another way to seek information. Seeing an AI summary in search is not the same as abandoning Google or asking an assistant to choose a business.

A May 2025 Pew Research Center analysis of one month of browsing data found that around six in ten respondents visited a search page containing an AI-generated summary. That measures exposure to a page with a summary; it does not measure how many people stopped using Google, bought something through AI, or discovered a business through an assistant. The broader balance of discovery across Google and different AI assistants remains unsettled. Pew Research Center’s report

What does Google say a site needs for AI search?
Google’s guidance treats its generative search features as part of Search, not as a separate channel requiring a special optimization system. Its guide discusses existing Search systems and query fan-out, in which a query may be explored through related searches. Google says foundational SEO remains relevant. For a page to be eligible to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google says it must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Those conditions do not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, serve, or feature a particular page. As Google puts it, “There are no additional technical requirements” for these AI features; that does not remove the usual Search eligibility requirements. What should a business improve first?
Make important pages accessible
- Check that key pages can be crawled and indexed. Confirm that robots.txt, a CDN, or hosting settings are not blocking Googlebot from important content.
- Keep essential information available as text, and make internal navigation usable so visitors and crawlers can reach it.
- Use Search Console to investigate indexing or search-performance issues rather than assuming an AI-specific setting is missing.
Give people a reason to choose your content
Publish material that answers real customer questions with useful detail, original experience, or a distinct point of view. Avoid generating batches of near-identical pages for slight variations of prompts. Google Search Relations’ John Mueller advised site owners to “Focus on unique, non-commodity content that visitors from Search and your own readers will find helpful and satisfying.” Google’s May 21, 2025 guidance on succeeding in AI search

Keep business information accurate
Maintain correct business details and, where relevant, Merchant Center information. Structured data can help describe a page, but it should accurately match content visitors can see. Google does not require special AI schema or newly created machine-readable files for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Existing controls, including robots.txt and snippet controls, still matter.

Measure outcomes, not just visibility claims
Google says traffic from its AI features is included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. Review search traffic alongside the outcomes that matter to your business—such as leads, sales, or signups—rather than treating clicks or a third-party “AI visibility” score as proof of commercial impact. Which AI-search advice is worth trusting?
| Decision area | Sound baseline | Be skeptical of |
|---|---|---|
| Technical access | Crawlability, indexability, and eligibility for Search | Claims that a special AI file or schema is mandatory |
| Content | Original, useful, reliable material | Scaled, repetitive pages made for prompt variations |
| Measurement | Search Console plus business outcomes | A proprietary score presented as guaranteed traffic |
| Promises | Improving accessibility and content quality | Guaranteed placement or recommendations in AI answers |
Google’s own documentation is a useful standard for assessing SEO advice. A service that promises guaranteed inclusion or recommendations should explain how it measures results and provide verifiable evidence; meeting Google’s stated requirements still does not guarantee visibility.
