What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, but not in a simple one-for-one way. AI data-center expansion is consuming more high-bandwidth memory, server DRAM and enterprise SSD capacity, encouraging manufacturers to prioritize those higher-value products. That tightens the broader DRAM and NAND supply chain and can raise costs for consumer PC memory and client SSDs.
The latest TrendForce outlook, published September 30, 2026, forecasts 4Q26 conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20%. Those are industry contract forecasts, not guaranteed retail increases for every RAM kit or SSD. Consumer demand, retailer inventory, product capacity and local competition can make the price you see move less, later or not at all.

What AI demand is doing to the memory market
AI workloads need several kinds of memory at once. Accelerators use high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for rapid data movement, servers use large amounts of conventional DRAM for working data, and AI systems store models, datasets and checkpoints on high-capacity enterprise SSDs. These products are not identical to the DDR5 modules in a desktop PC or the client SSD in a laptop, but they compete for manufacturing capacity, packaging resources and suppliers’ investment.
Micron’s 2026 third-quarter Form 10-Q says AI-driven memory and storage growth is outpacing industry supply. The company reported constrained supply and increased pricing across its DRAM and NAND portfolio. That is company-reported evidence rather than an independent measure of every retail market, but it explains why AI demand can affect products that consumers buy.

Suppliers also have a financial reason to allocate scarce advanced-process capacity to server products, HBM and enterprise storage. Samsung’s FY2025 results emphasized HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs while describing limited supply and higher prices, and the company planned to expand AI-related products in 2026. SK hynix’s second-quarter 2026 results likewise reported continuing AI-infrastructure demand and quarter-over-quarter increases in both DRAM and NAND flash prices.
The result is a supply-side squeeze, not a rule that every consumer component must rise by the same percentage. A desktop memory kit and a data-center module can use different specifications, production steps and contracts. Their prices may respond at different speeds.
The latest price outlook, and what the percentages actually mean
TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 forecast is the most recent outlook cited here. It covers negotiated industry contract prices, generally agreed between suppliers and large buyers such as OEMs, module makers and storage manufacturers. A contract increase can eventually influence retail pricing, but it is not a promised change at a particular shop.
| Market measure | Forecast change | Period | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional DRAM contract prices | Up 10–15% quarter over quarter | 4Q26 | Applies to industry contracts, not automatically to a consumer RAM kit |
| NAND Flash contract prices | Up 15–20% quarter over quarter | 4Q26 | Underlying flash-media pricing; a client SSD’s retail price can diverge |
| Conventional DRAM contract prices | Up 13–18% quarter over quarter | 3Q26 context | Earlier TrendForce forecast, included to show the preceding direction |
| NAND Flash contract prices | Up 10–15% quarter over quarter | 3Q26 context | Earlier industry forecast, not a consumer price measurement |
For example, a 15% increase in a NAND contract does not mean a 1TB client SSD at a local retailer must become exactly 15% more expensive. The drive also includes a controller, firmware, packaging, assembly, distribution, retailer margin and sometimes a promotional discount. Existing inventory may have been purchased at an earlier cost. Conversely, a retailer with little stock may reprice quickly when replacement inventory becomes more expensive.

Will consumer RAM get more expensive?
Consumer PC RAM is exposed to upward pressure, especially when server demand absorbs available capacity. TrendForce says suppliers are prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products and that more capacity could move toward server applications. It also warns that PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as allocation shifts toward servers.
Why PC memory is not the same as HBM
HBM is a specialized, vertically stacked memory product used alongside AI accelerators. Desktop and laptop modules generally use conventional DRAM, such as DDR5, installed in a different form factor. HBM demand does not set the retail price of a specific DDR5 kit directly. The connection is that manufacturers have finite clean-room, wafer, testing and packaging resources. Investment and allocation decisions favor products with stronger returns, leaving less flexibility for other segments.
What the PC supply situation means in practice
TrendForce reported that agreed supply volumes to PC OEMs and module makers were being fulfilled through 2026. That means a shortage of every retail kit is not established. Buyers should expect product availability to vary by speed, capacity, generation and region rather than assume that all RAM disappears or rises together.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A manufacturer may secure a larger volume under contract while a small retailer has only limited inventory. One store can therefore hold older stock at a lower price while another reprices new shipments immediately.

Which consumer buyers are most exposed
- New PC builders: They purchase the full capacity at current market prices and have no existing modules to reuse.
- High-capacity upgrades: 64GB, 96GB or 128GB kits use more chips and can be affected by availability even when mainstream capacities remain stocked.
- Older-generation systems: DDR4 or laptop-specific modules may have different production and inventory dynamics from current DDR5 desktop kits.
- Specialized speeds and timings: Less common specifications have fewer competing sellers and can show wider price differences.
Why SSD pricing can diverge from RAM pricing
SSDs use NAND flash, a non-volatile medium that retains data without power. DRAM is volatile working memory used for active programs and data. A NAND contract forecast should not be applied to RAM, and a DRAM forecast should not be applied to an SSD.
Client SSDs: weaker buying can temper increases
TrendForce says PC brands can draw on finished-device and channel inventories, while weaker consumer demand and limited purchasing requirements reduce urgency. Some PC makers are reducing mainstream SSD capacities to lower system costs. Those conditions give suppliers a more flexible pricing stance for client SSDs, even when the underlying NAND market is tightening.
This creates a possible lag between higher NAND contracts and a laptop or retail SSD price. A distributor with inventory bought before the increase can keep pricing stable. A manufacturer trying to clear excess stock may discount a drive despite a rising market forecast. When that inventory is exhausted, replacement costs can pass through more visibly.
Enterprise SSDs: a different demand engine
The enterprise SSD market presents a markedly different picture. Cloud providers are expanding infrastructure for AI inference, and TrendForce forecasts enterprise SSD bit demand to grow by more than 80% year over year in 2026. Most incremental supply is already committed, so enterprise pricing is expected to grow faster than client-side pricing.

That more than 80% figure describes enterprise SSD demand, not consumer SSD sales or the price of a retail 2TB drive. Enterprise systems use different endurance ratings, capacities, firmware and qualification processes. Their procurement contracts and supply commitments should not be used as a direct prediction for consumer shelves.
Why a contract-price forecast may not reach your shopping cart immediately
Several layers sit between a memory manufacturer and a consumer:
- Chip contracts: DRAM or NAND manufacturers negotiate prices and volumes with large customers.
- Component assembly: Module and SSD makers add controllers, substrates, testing, firmware and packaging.
- Device production: PC makers may have inventory purchased under earlier contracts.
- Distribution: Wholesalers and retailers carry stock bought at different costs.
- Consumer pricing: Sellers adjust for demand, competition, promotions, currency, taxes and shipping.
TrendForce’s earlier third-quarter outlook described consumers reaching affordability limits and client SSD buyers resisting another round of increases because of inventory. Those demand constraints can moderate pass-through even while supply remains tight. A forecast therefore indicates direction and pressure, not a guaranteed checkout price.

There is no universal “buy now” signal in the cited data. The forecast supports the possibility of continued upward pressure, but it does not establish current retail prices by country or prove that purchasing today will save money. Make the decision from your actual upgrade need and the local price you can verify.

Buy sooner when the upgrade is necessary
- Your current system is paging to storage, crashing under memory load or failing a required workload.
- You have found a compatible capacity and specification at a price that fits your budget.
- Your laptop or desktop has limited upgradeability and the required module or SSD is becoming uncommon.
Wait when the purchase is optional
- You are considering an upgrade only because of a market headline.
- Your system has adequate RAM and free storage for the work you actually do.
- You are willing to compare several capacities and sellers while monitoring inventory.
Do not treat the 10–15% DRAM or 15–20% NAND figures as a promise that waiting will cost exactly that much, or that buying immediately guarantees a saving. They are quarter-over-quarter contract forecasts for 4Q26.
Compatibility checks before buying consumer RAM
Price is irrelevant if the module cannot run in your device. Confirm these details in the computer manufacturer’s specification, motherboard manual or current module labels:
- Memory generation: DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. A DDR5 module will not fit a DDR4-only slot.
- Form factor: Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs have different physical sizes and pin layouts.
- Maximum capacity: Check the motherboard or laptop limit, including the number of slots.
- Speed and profiles: Verify supported data rates and whether an XMP or EXPO profile is appropriate for the platform.
- Channel configuration: A matched kit can make dual-channel operation simpler than mixing unrelated modules.
- Operating voltage and error correction: Registered, unbuffered and ECC memory are platform-specific choices, not interchangeable consumer upgrades.
For a planned PC upgrade, search for a compatible DDR5 RAM kit by generation, form factor, capacity and supported speed rather than by the AI market forecast alone.

Compatibility checks before buying a client SSD
- Interface: Identify whether the device accepts SATA, PCIe NVMe or another interface.
- Physical size: M.2 drives can use different lengths, such as 2230, 2242 or 2280; a slot may not support every size.
- PCIe generation: A newer drive may work in an older slot at reduced speed, but verify system support and thermals.
- Capacity: Check firmware and operating-system limits, especially in older laptops.
- Endurance and warranty: Match the drive’s rated workload to your use; an enterprise SSD specification is not automatically an advantage in a client computer.
- Migration plan: Back up data before cloning or replacing the boot drive, and confirm that the computer can be opened without voiding applicable coverage.
What could change the outlook
The pressure could ease if new capacity comes online, AI infrastructure spending slows, or cloud providers delay deployments. Consumer prices could also remain subdued if PC shipments weaken or retailers carry substantial inventory. Conversely, stronger AI inference expansion, further supplier allocation toward servers, currency movement or a shortage of a particular consumer specification could make some products rise faster than the broad contract forecast.
The available evidence does not quantify what share of a consumer product’s final price is caused specifically by AI demand. It also does not establish a universal retail trajectory by country, seller or product model. Those limits matter: the industry direction is informative, but a local comparison of current prices and stock is still the best buying evidence.
Bottom line for consumers
AI memory demand is likely to keep upward pressure on consumer RAM and client SSD costs while supply remains constrained. The clearest near-term figures are TrendForce’s 4Q26 contract forecasts: 10–15% higher conventional DRAM and 15–20% higher NAND Flash quarter over quarter. Consumer RAM is exposed because suppliers are prioritizing server products, while client SSD pricing can lag because PC makers and distributors have inventory and weaker purchasing needs. Enterprise SSD demand is much stronger and should not be used as a proxy for retail drives.
Use the forecast as market context, not a guaranteed retail price chart. Buy when the upgrade is needed and the exact component is compatible at a reasonable local price; otherwise, compare inventory and capacity options rather than assuming that either waiting or buying immediately will always win.
