A TV mount is designed to make a small number of intentional holes in wall studs. When the holes are centered, correctly sized and drilled for the exact lag bolts specified by the mount, those holes are the normal way the load is transferred into the framing—not proof that the stud has been dangerously damaged.
Problems arise when an installer misses the stud center, drills the wrong pilot-hole size or depth, uses unapproved fasteners, overtightens the lag bolts, or installs a mount on a wall or stud layout it does not support. Requirements differ by model, so the current manual for your mount and TV takes priority over any general rule.

What a TV mount actually does to a stud
A wall mount has a plate that sits against the wall and a set of fasteners that pass through that plate into structural material. For a wood-stud installation, the lag bolts clamp the plate to the stud. The TV’s weight is then carried through the mount and fasteners into the stud rather than being supported by drywall alone.
That process requires holes. Installation guides commonly call for marking the center of each stud, drilling pilot holes, and driving lag bolts with washers. The holes are therefore an intended part of the mounting method. The official instructions reviewed for the RCA MAF130BK, Vogel’s MA 3010 series and other cited models do not describe correctly made pilot holes as structural damage.

- Important: Watch the video and learn the”Designed for" details listed below!
- Designed for concrete, brick and wood studs wall (single stud).
- Designed for TVs up to 80 lbs (36.3 KG) and display sized 26" - 55" (66 CM - 140 CM).
- Designed for VESA sized from 3.9'' x 3.9'' through 15.7'' x 15.7''.
- Comfortable View with tilt range from +10° to -5°.
That conclusion has limits. The guidance is model-specific, not a universal engineering study of every stud, hole diameter, wall condition or load. A hole near a stud edge, a hole that is too large, a cracked or decayed stud, or a fastener that does not match the manual can create a different situation. If the framing is damaged or the installation does not fit the manufacturer’s specifications, stop and get an assessment rather than relying on a generic “safe hole” rule.
When mounting can cause avoidable stud problems
Missing the center of the stud
Driving a lag bolt near the edge of a 2-by-4 can split wood or leave too little material around the fastener. This is why the cited instructions tell installers to locate the framing with a stud finder and mark its center instead of estimating from a wall outlet, trim or a previous hole. Vogel’s MA 3010 guidance states: “Don’t just guess! Always use a stud finder to determine the position of studs.”
Finding the stud is only the first step. Confirm the center at more than one point if the wall finish is thick, uneven or gives an inconsistent reading. Mark the centerline where the mount’s template or hole pattern will actually land.

Using the wrong pilot-hole size or depth
A pilot hole guides the threaded portion of a lag bolt and reduces the force needed to drive it. Too small a hole can require excessive torque and increase the chance of splitting or overtightening. Too large a hole removes too much wood and can reduce the fastener’s grip. A hole that is too shallow can leave the bolt bottomed out before the plate is clamped.

The RCA MAF130BK instructions specify a 1/4-inch pilot bit for its wood-stud installation. That is a specification for that mount and its supplied hardware, not a universal bit size. Another mount may call for a different diameter or depth. Measure and drill exactly as the relevant manual says.
Overtightening the lag bolts
Tightening is meant to draw the plate firmly against the wall. More force is not automatically safer. Excessive torque can crush the wood fibers, damage the bolt or distort the mount. RCA’s instructions specifically caution against overtightening. Tighten only until the plate is secure and follow any torque value or tool guidance in your manual.
Using the wrong fastener or too few attachment points
Lag bolts, washers and other hardware are selected as a set. Substituting a screw because it “looks close,” omitting a washer, or using fewer holes than the manual requires changes the load path. The mount may appear solid while the fasteners are not engaged as designed. Use the supplied hardware or an alternative explicitly approved by the manufacturer, and install every required fastener.

A mount must be suitable for the wall material, stud spacing and combined weight of the mount and display. The RCA MAF130BK example requires two adjacent wood studs 16 inches on center and says the studs must support the combined weight of the hardware and TV. Those figures cannot be transferred automatically to another product.

Amazon’s Ember Artline instructions require attachment into two studs when the set is installed on drywall or plasterboard and warn: “Failure to follow instructions could cause serious injury and/or TV damage.” If your spacing, wall finish or TV weight does not match the stated conditions, do not improvise a single-stud installation unless the exact manual provides for it.
Requirements vary by mount: examples from official guides
The following table shows why the exact model manual matters. These are examples, not a universal specification sheet.
| Guide or model | Stud or wall condition | Installation details stated in the guide | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| RCA MAF130BK | Two adjacent wood studs | Studs 16 inches on center; mark each stud center; drill 1/4-inch pilot holes; use supplied lag bolts and washers; do not overtighten. | The spacing and bit size apply to this model. |
| Vogel’s MA 3010 series | Wood-stud installation covered; unusual wall types addressed separately | Use a stud finder, mark the holes and drill before attaching the plate. Do not use the mount itself as a drill guide. | Consult a specialist supplier or Vogel’s support if the wall is unusual or you are uncertain. |
| Amazon Ember Artline | Drywall or plasterboard | Secure the mount into two studs; professional installation is recommended when stud spacing is unsuitable. | This is device-specific guidance, not a rule for every TV. |
| Vogel’s TVM 1220/1240 series | Specified solid wall materials and wood-stud configurations | Use a stud finder and position template holes horizontally centered on a stud. A stud adapter is mentioned for mounting between studs. | Confirm that the adapter and accessories fit your exact model and wall. |
How to mount a TV without compromising the studs
- Read the exact manual first. Identify the mount model, the TV’s weight and VESA pattern, approved wall types, required number of studs, hole pattern, pilot-hole diameter and depth, fasteners, and any torque limit. Do not use a generic installation chart in place of those instructions.
- Inspect the planned wall. Check for the required stud spacing and make sure the combined load of the mount and display is within the stated limit. Consider electrical cables, plumbing and other concealed services before drilling. If the wall is an unusual construction or its framing is uncertain, pause for manufacturer or qualified-installer advice.
- Locate the studs with a stud finder. Scan across the intended mounting area and mark both edges of each stud if the tool allows it. Establish the centerline rather than relying on a single beep. Vogel’s explicitly recommends a stud finder instead of guessing.
- Position the template or plate. Hold the template level at the desired height and align its holes with the marked stud centers. Some guides, including Vogel’s TVM 1220/1240 instructions, call for template holes to be horizontally centered on a stud. Do not assume the mount’s holes will suit every spacing.
- Mark every required hole. Count the holes shown in the manual and mark only those locations. If a hole lands outside the stud or the plate cannot span the required studs, stop and solve the layout before drilling.
- Drill the specified pilot holes. Use the bit diameter and depth stated for the exact fastener. The RCA example uses a 1/4-inch bit; another product may not. Drill straight into the stud, and do not use the mount itself as a drill guide when the manual says not to.
- Attach the wall plate with the specified hardware. Place each washer as directed, start the lag bolts by hand so the threads are not cross-started, and tighten evenly. Keep the plate flat against the wall.
- Stop at the manual’s tightening point. Do not add force after the plate is secure, and use a torque setting if one is supplied. Overtightening is a stated caution in the RCA instructions.
- Attach the TV and test the assembly gradually. Follow the mount’s procedure for the brackets, locking tabs and safety screws. Confirm that the TV is fully captured before letting go, then check for movement, loose hardware or a plate pulling away from the wall.
- Recheck after adjustment. If the mount tilts, swivels or extends, operate it slowly and watch the plate and fasteners. Movement that causes the plate to lift, the wall to flex or a fastener to loosen is a reason to stop and reassess the installation.
What to do when the studs do not line up
The plate does not span the required studs
Do not shift one side of the mount into drywall just to make the holes fit. First check whether the manual permits a different hole pattern or a wider plate. Some products are designed for a specific spacing; the RCA MAF130BK example calls for two adjacent 16-inch-on-center studs.

Look for a manufacturer-approved plate, extension or stud adapter that is compatible with your exact mount. Vogel’s TVM 1220/1240 guidance mentions a stud adapter for mounting between studs, but that does not establish compatibility with another model. Verify the adapter’s instructions, load rating and fastener requirements before purchase or installation.

The studs are too close together or offset
A different mount may have a hole pattern that fits, but changing products changes the instructions, hardware and load limits. Select only a model whose manual explicitly covers your spacing and wall type. Do not enlarge or slot holes in the plate unless the manufacturer authorizes that modification.
You cannot confirm the framing
Stop rather than drilling exploratory holes throughout the wall. Vogel’s advises seeking specialist help for unusual wall types or uncertainty, and the Ember Artline guidance recommends professional installation when stud spacing is unsuitable. A qualified installer can identify framing and services and choose a compliant attachment method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Wall material changes the answer
Drywall or plasterboard over wood studs
The board is a finish layer; the structural attachment must reach the studs when the mount’s instructions require studs. Amazon’s Ember Artline directions specify two studs for this situation. Use the fasteners and pilot holes stated by the mount, not ordinary drywall anchors substituted for the specified stud attachment.
Solid masonry or other solid walls
Some guides supply accessories intended for specified solid wall materials. Vogel’s TVM 1220/1240 instructions distinguish those materials from wood-stud mounting. Masonry anchors, drill bits and hole depths are different from wood-stud hardware. Follow the manual’s wall-material section exactly, and do not drive wood lag bolts into masonry unless the manufacturer explicitly says to.

Unusual, hollow or uncertain construction
Older homes, metal framing, layered finishes, plaster over lath and hollow partitions may not match the assumptions of a standard stud mount. The cited Vogel’s guidance directs readers with unusual walls or uncertainty to a specialist supplier or installer. Treat that as a compatibility question, not as a reason to guess.
If you drilled the wrong hole
Do not simply move the lag bolt a fraction of an inch and reuse the same plate without checking the manual. A misplaced hole can leave the fastener off-center, and an abandoned hole can complicate the strength of the intended attachment. Remove the hardware, inspect the wood and surrounding wall, and compare the new location with the required hole pattern.
- If the pilot hole is only marked but not drilled, erase or move the mark and recheck the stud center.
- If a small pilot hole is in the wrong place, do not force a lag bolt into it. Ask the mount manufacturer or a qualified installer whether a new location, alternate hole pattern or repair is acceptable.
- If the stud is split, soft, visibly damaged or repeatedly drilled, do not mount the TV until the framing has been assessed.
- If a bolt spins without tightening, the hole may be oversized or the threads may not be engaging sound wood. Remove the load and obtain a corrective method approved for the mount.
- If the plate pulls away, tilts unexpectedly or the wall cracks around a fastener, take the TV down safely and stop using the mount until the cause is resolved.

- A torque limit or tightening instruction is understood.
- Professional help is arranged if spacing, framing or wall type is uncertain.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The cited installation guides establish procedures and warnings for particular products. They do not provide a general damage rate, a universal maximum hole size or a numerical probability that a stud will fail. The 16-inch spacing and 1/4-inch pilot-hole size are specifications in the RCA MAF130BK instructions, not industry-wide values.
Accordingly, the safest answer is conditional: a correctly specified and correctly installed mount normally uses intentional holes in studs; an installation that misses the stud center, uses incompatible hardware, is overtightened or ignores the wall and load requirements can create avoidable risk. The exact manual, the actual framing and the condition of the wall determine whether a proposed installation is acceptable.
