Will a Samsung Soundbar Work With a Non-Samsung TV?

Yes. A Samsung soundbar can work with a non-Samsung TV when the two exact models share a compatible connection, such as HDMI ARC/eARC, optical audio or Bluetooth. The brands do not have to match for basic sound, but the available ports, supported audio formats and control features do have to match.

Use the TV’s audio output and the soundbar’s corresponding input as the compatibility test. A mixed-brand setup may provide reliable TV audio while omitting Samsung-specific features designed for a Samsung TV and Samsung soundbar pair.

What determines compatibility?

Soundbars do not require a television from the same manufacturer to play audio. They receive a digital audio signal through a physical input or wireless connection. If your TV can send audio through a connection that your Samsung soundbar can receive, the basic setup can work.

Check the labels on both devices rather than relying on the brand names. For the most common wired setup, the TV must have an HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, and the soundbar must have an HDMI port labeled HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) or equivalent. An ordinary HDMI input on the TV does not necessarily send television audio back to a soundbar.

For an optical connection, the TV needs an optical audio output and the soundbar needs an optical or Digital Audio IN. For Bluetooth, both devices must support Bluetooth audio and allow the TV to select the soundbar as an output device.

Basic playback and advanced features are separate questions. A non-Samsung TV may send stereo, Dolby Digital or other supported formats to the soundbar, but Samsung-specific pairing and control functions are not guaranteed. Samsung UK Support’s guide, updated 11 August 2026, associates BT, TVSoundConnect and Soundshare use with a Samsung TV and Samsung soundbar. That statement should not be treated as a promise that every Samsung soundbar has every feature, or that those features work with another brand of TV.

Connection options compared

Choose the connection that both models support and that fits your desired audio quality and control. The exact sound formats available still depend on the TV, soundbar model, firmware and the output format selected in the TV menu.

Connection What must be present Advantages Limits and checks
HDMI ARC/eARC TV HDMI ARC/eARC port and soundbar HDMI ARC/eARC port One cable carries TV audio; HDMI-CEC can allow coordinated power and volume control. eARC has the greatest format capacity of these common options. Use the labeled ARC/eARC ports, enable ARC/eARC and CEC when required, and verify that both devices support the format you want. Samsung recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or a Premium High Speed cable for its documented ARC/eARC setup.
Optical TV Optical OUT and soundbar Optical IN Simple, dependable wired fallback that is independent of HDMI-CEC. Audio-format support is more limited. Samsung’s comparison says optical does not carry Dolby Digital Plus. You must select optical output on the TV and the corresponding D.IN/optical source on the soundbar.
Bluetooth Bluetooth audio on both devices No audio cable and easy placement when pairing succeeds. Pairing menus and supported codecs vary. Samsung lists fewer high-bitrate format capabilities for Bluetooth than for HDMI-eARC, and wireless latency or reconnection behavior can differ by model.
Wi-Fi or proprietary wireless Support for the exact TV, soundbar and app or ecosystem combination Can add convenient wireless control or multiroom functions on compatible equipment. Do not assume a feature designed for Samsung devices will work with a non-Samsung TV. Check both manuals for model and regional restrictions.

Compare the options on five practical points: shared ports, the audio formats you need, how much control you want from the TV remote, cable availability and whether a wireless connection is acceptable in your room.

Set up HDMI ARC or eARC

HDMI is normally the best first choice when both devices have ARC or eARC. It can carry TV audio over the same type of cable used for HDMI equipment and may let the TV remote adjust soundbar volume when HDMI-CEC works correctly.

  1. Locate the correct ports. On the TV, find the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC. On the soundbar, find HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC). Do not connect the soundbar to an unrelated HDMI input and expect audio return.
  2. Connect an appropriate cable. Samsung’s documented setup recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or a Premium High Speed cable. Use a cable that meets the requirements of the capabilities you are trying to use; a shared connector by itself does not prove that every eARC format will pass.
  3. Select the soundbar source. Use the soundbar remote or controls to choose the HDMI ARC/eARC source. On some Samsung models the display may show HDMI ARC; source labels can vary by model.
  4. Change the TV audio output. Open the TV’s sound settings and choose the connected external audio system, receiver or HDMI output. The menu wording differs among manufacturers.
  5. Enable ARC/eARC if necessary. Some televisions have a separate toggle for HDMI-ARC or eARC. Turn on eARC on both devices when you want eARC operation and both models support it.
  6. Enable HDMI-CEC for remote control. HDMI-CEC is the standard control channel that can coordinate power and volume. Samsung calls its implementation Anynet+; another manufacturer may use a different name and menu location. CEC is not required for every audio connection, but disabling it can remove automatic switching or remote-volume behavior.
  7. Test the result. Play a TV channel or app, raise the volume and confirm that the soundbar display indicates the HDMI/ARC source. If you get silence, follow the port and settings checks in the troubleshooting section before changing advanced audio formats.

ARC and eARC are not identical. eARC generally supports more demanding formats and higher data rates, but the TV, cable, soundbar and selected output format all have to support the same capability. If either device is ARC-only, the link operates within ARC’s limits.

Use optical audio as a fallback

Optical is useful when the TV has no ARC/eARC port, when HDMI-CEC is unreliable or when you want a straightforward connection with fewer control dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Insert the cable into the TV’s Optical OUT and the soundbar’s Digital Audio IN (Optical). Remove any protective caps from the cable tips before inserting them.
  2. Set the TV’s sound output to Optical, Digital audio out or the equivalent label.
  3. Set the soundbar source to D.IN, Optical or the equivalent input.
  4. Play audio and verify that the optical indicator or source name appears on the soundbar.

If a particular soundtrack fails, open the TV’s digital-audio-output format setting and try a format the soundbar supports. Samsung’s format comparison states that optical does not carry Dolby Digital Plus, so an application or TV set to that format may need a different output choice or an HDMI connection. Consult both model manuals for the complete supported-format list.

  • BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices

Pair the soundbar over Bluetooth

Bluetooth avoids an audio cable, but it is more model-dependent than a wired connection. Put the soundbar into Bluetooth pairing mode, then open the TV’s sound-output or Bluetooth-speaker list and select the soundbar when it appears.

  1. Choose Bluetooth as the soundbar’s source and activate pairing mode according to its model instructions.
  2. On the TV, open the audio output, speaker list or Bluetooth device menu.
  3. Select the soundbar name and approve pairing.
  4. Set the TV to use the paired soundbar as its output and test speech and video for acceptable synchronization.

Menus, supported codecs and reconnection behavior vary by model. Samsung’s UK guidance lists fewer high-bitrate formats for Bluetooth than for HDMI-eARC, so Bluetooth is best viewed as a convenience option rather than a replacement for eARC when maximum format support matters.

What you may lose with a mixed-brand setup

Audio compatibility does not guarantee ecosystem compatibility. Samsung features that depend on communication between a Samsung TV and Samsung soundbar may not appear when the TV is made by another company. The Samsung UK Support wording specifically says that using BT, TVSoundConnect or Soundshare is available when connecting both a Samsung TV and Samsung soundbar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With a non-Samsung TV, you should not promise access to those named features. You may still obtain ordinary Bluetooth audio if both models support it, and HDMI-CEC may still provide power and volume control if the manufacturers’ implementations interoperate. However, CEC behavior is not identical across brands, so automatic input switching or one-remote operation can be inconsistent.

Surround and object-based formats also require a complete path. The TV must be able to output the format, the connection must carry it and the soundbar must decode it. If any part of that chain is limited, the TV may convert the signal to another format or output stereo instead.

Troubleshoot “no sound” in the right order

Start with the physical path and basic source selection. Changing advanced formats before confirming the correct ports often hides the real problem.

  • Confirm the TV port. For ARC/eARC, the cable must be in the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC. Other HDMI sockets may only be inputs.
  • Confirm the soundbar port. The TV’s ARC/eARC socket must connect to the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC), not to an unrelated HDMI input.
  • Check cable seating. Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends. Inspect for a damaged connector and try a known-good cable that meets the required category.
  • Select the matching source. For optical, choose D.IN or optical on the soundbar. For HDMI, choose the HDMI ARC/eARC source. For Bluetooth, select the paired wireless device.
  • Set the TV’s output correctly. Choose the external receiver, soundbar, HDMI output or optical output rather than the internal TV speakers.
  • Enable ARC/eARC and CEC. Some TVs require separate settings. Samsung calls CEC Anynet+; a non-Samsung TV will use its own name.
  • Lower the format complexity. If one soundtrack produces silence, temporarily select a more basic digital output format supported by both manuals. Optical cannot carry Dolby Digital Plus according to Samsung’s comparison.
  • Power-cycle both devices. Turn off the TV and soundbar, disconnect power briefly, reconnect, then select the correct source again. This can clear a failed HDMI handshake.
  • Try another shared route. If ARC/eARC still fails, try optical or Bluetooth only if both exact models support it. A successful fallback identifies the problem as connection, handshake or setting-related rather than proof that the soundbar is unusable.
  • Check model and region documentation. Samsung cautions that available options can differ by model and region. Read the manuals and regional support pages for both devices before concluding that they are incompatible.

If the TV sees the soundbar but volume control does not work, the audio path may still be functioning. Treat remote control as a separate HDMI-CEC issue: confirm CEC is enabled on both devices, then check whether the TV manufacturer documents soundbar control for external brands.

Which connection should you choose?

Choose HDMI ARC/eARC when

  • Both devices have matching ARC or eARC ports.
  • You want one cable and the best chance of broad audio-format support.
  • You want to try TV-remote power and volume control through HDMI-CEC.

Choose optical when

  • The TV lacks ARC/eARC or HDMI control is unreliable.
  • You need a simple wired link and can accept the format limitations.
  • Both devices clearly label optical output and input.

Choose Bluetooth when

  • You need a cable-free installation and both models support Bluetooth audio.
  • You accept model-dependent codecs, possible latency and fewer high-bitrate capabilities than HDMI-eARC.

Investigate wireless ecosystem features only when

  • The manuals explicitly list your exact TV and soundbar models as compatible.
  • You are prepared for regional or firmware differences and do not require those features for basic audio.

Before buying a cable or replacing equipment

Read the port labels and manuals first. If ARC/eARC is available, check whether your existing HDMI cable meets the documented requirement; Samsung recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or Premium High Speed cable for its ARC/eARC instructions. Buy a replacement only when the current cable is missing, damaged or below the needed specification.

  • BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices

For optical, purchase a digital optical (Toslink) cable only when both devices have the required optical ports. Optical can solve a connection problem, but it will not add support for formats the interface cannot carry.

When no shared connection exists, the issue is not that the brands differ; it is that the specific devices lack a common audio path. A different soundbar, TV, adapter or installation approach may then be necessary, and the manuals remain the deciding reference.

Bottom line

A Samsung soundbar generally works with a non-Samsung TV through a shared HDMI ARC/eARC, optical or Bluetooth connection. Match the labeled ports, select the corresponding inputs and TV output, and enable ARC/eARC or HDMI-CEC when required. Expect basic audio to work independently of brand, but verify model-specific formats, wireless features and remote-control behavior instead of assuming Samsung-only functions will transfer.
