Usually, yes—but the monitor cannot create a 1440p, 144Hz signal that the connected device, port, cable, dock, or adapter does not support. QHD normally means 2560×1440, while 144Hz is the display’s maximum refresh capability. A laptop may reach QHD at 144Hz, a PlayStation 5 generally uses 1440p at 60Hz or 120Hz, and an older PC may be limited to 60Hz or another lower rate. Check the entire signal path rather than the monitor specification alone.

What a QHD 144Hz monitor actually promises

QHD is commonly used for a 2560×1440 resolution. The 144Hz label means the panel can refresh up to 144 times per second when it receives a compatible signal. It does not mean every device connected to the monitor will output 2560×1440 at 144Hz.

Think of the connection as one chain: source device, source port, cable, any dock or adapter, monitor input, and the selected display mode. The chain can run only at the highest mode supported by every link. ViewSonic’s support guidance makes the same point: the source output, monitor input, and cable must all meet the requirements for the chosen resolution and refresh rate.

A monitor can still be useful when a device cannot reach its headline specification. For example, a console may send 1440p at 120Hz, while an older computer may send 1440p at 60Hz. The display simply operates at the mode the source negotiates.

Compatibility at a glance

Source What must be checked Likely outcome
Modern laptop GPU capability, exact HDMI/DisplayPort/USB-C video specification, monitor input, cable, and dock limits QHD at 144Hz is possible when every component lists that mode
PlayStation 5 Monitor’s HDMI support for 1440p at 60Hz or 120Hz, plus compatible VRR if required 1440p works on compatible displays; the console uses 60Hz or 120Hz rather than 144Hz
Older PC Graphics processor, output port, driver modes, cable, and monitor input It may work at QHD 60Hz or another lower refresh rate, even if 144Hz is unavailable
Laptop dock, hub, or adapter Its own maximum resolution and refresh rate, in addition to the laptop and monitor It can reduce the available mode; direct connection is the clearest test

Will a laptop run QHD at 144Hz?

It can, provided the laptop’s graphics hardware and video output support 2560×1440 at 144Hz through the connector you plan to use. The exact laptop model matters: two computers with similar processors can have different graphics hardware or port capabilities.

Check the laptop’s physical output

Look up the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C port. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output, DisplayPort signaling, QHD resolution, or a particular refresh rate. The specification must identify video output and the supported modes. If the laptop has several outputs, verify each one separately.

Include the dock or adapter in the calculation

A dock, hub, or USB-C-to-video adapter becomes another limiting component. Read its stated maximum resolution and refresh rate for the specific output you will use; a dock may support QHD but only at 60Hz, for example. An adapter cannot make an unsupported laptop output a higher resolution or refresh rate. For diagnosis, connect the monitor directly to the laptop whenever possible.

Confirm the monitor input’s limit

Use the exact monitor model’s manual or specification table. HDMI and DisplayPort inputs can have different limits on the same monitor, and a specification that applies to DisplayPort may not apply to HDMI. If the laptop can produce 1440p/144Hz but the selected monitor input cannot accept it, choose another supported input or a lower mode.

Set and verify the mode in Windows

  1. Connect the monitor and open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the external monitor if more than one display is listed.
  3. Open Display resolution and choose 2560×1440 when it is offered.
  4. Open Advanced display (or the display information panel in your Windows version) and inspect the current resolution and refresh rate.
  5. Choose 144Hz only if it appears as an available option, then apply the change and check that the image remains stable.

Microsoft’s Windows display guidance documents the display information panel and the controls for changing resolution and refresh rate. If 144Hz does not appear, do not assume the monitor is defective: the missing capability can belong to the laptop port, driver, cable, dock, or selected input.

Will a PlayStation 5 work with a QHD 144Hz monitor?

Yes, when the monitor accepts the PS5’s supported 1440p modes over HDMI. Sony states: “1440p video output on PS5 requires a TV or PC monitor that supports 1440p/60Hz, or 1440p/60Hz and 120Hz.” A 144Hz monitor can therefore be a good match, but the PS5 does not turn its 120Hz output into 144Hz. The console selects one of its supported modes.

Test 1440p output on the console

  1. Open Settings on the PS5.
  2. Choose Screen and Video.
  3. Open Video Output.
  4. Select Test 1440p Output and let the console report which modes the display accepts.
  5. Use 1440p at 60Hz or 120Hz when that mode is shown as supported.

Console compatibility depends especially on the monitor’s HDMI input, not merely its DisplayPort specification. Before buying, look for explicit 1440p/120Hz support over HDMI if 120Hz gaming is your goal.

Understand VRR separately

Variable refresh rate is an additional compatibility question. Sony says PS5 VRR requires a compatible HDMI display and a supported configuration. Check the monitor’s manual for HDMI VRR support and then verify the setting on the console. A monitor can accept 1440p/120Hz yet lack VRR over HDMI, or support VRR only within particular ranges.

Will an older PC work?

Often, it will display an image, but not necessarily at 144Hz. Basic output compatibility and gaming performance are separate issues. An older graphics processor may drive 2560×1440 at 60Hz while struggling to render modern games at that resolution and frame rate. The monitor’s 144Hz rating does not change the PC’s rendering capability.

Check the graphics hardware and port

Identify the exact graphics card or integrated graphics hardware, then consult its specifications for 2560×1440 and the desired refresh rate on the specific output. Check the physical port as well: the card may offer different capabilities on HDMI and DisplayPort. Install a current display driver appropriate for the operating system and hardware, because an outdated driver can hide available modes.

Use the driver’s offered modes as evidence

After connecting the monitor, inspect the operating system’s available resolutions and refresh rates. If 2560×1440 appears only at 60Hz, that is the current supported mode for the complete setup. If QHD is absent, test another output or a direct connection and recheck the cable and monitor input. Do not force an unsupported mode: it can produce a blank screen or an “out of range” message.

A model-specific example

Manufacturer specifications illustrate why the input matters. MSI’s MAG 274QP QD-OLED X24 specification lists 2560×1440 up to 240Hz through both HDMI and DisplayPort. That describes the monitor’s inputs; it does not establish that an older PC, laptop, or console connected to it can provide 240Hz—or even 144Hz.

Choose the correct input and cable

Use the input that supports the mode your source can deliver. PCs commonly use DisplayPort or a USB-C video connection when the hardware supports it; consoles normally connect by HDMI. Those are practical tendencies, not guarantees, so verify the exact specifications for your equipment.

Connection decision Why it matters What to verify
HDMI versus DisplayPort The monitor can expose different maximum modes on each input QHD refresh-rate support on the input actually being used
USB-C video USB-C shape does not prove that video is supported Video-output capability of the laptop and the dock or adapter
Cable A cable must carry the selected resolution and refresh rate The cable specification and the source/monitor requirements
Dock or hub It can impose a lower limit than the laptop or monitor Maximum resolution and refresh rate for that exact output

ViewSonic’s guidance states that reaching 144Hz requires the appropriate version of DisplayPort or HDMI for the resolution. If a high-refresh option is missing, replace or bypass the cable, dock, or adapter with a known-compatible connection rather than assuming an adapter will unlock a higher mode.

A reliable setup and troubleshooting procedure

  1. Write down the target mode. Decide whether you need 2560×1440 at 144Hz, 120Hz, or 60Hz. Console users should normally target the PS5 modes the console supports.
  2. Read the monitor manual. Record the maximum QHD refresh rate for each HDMI and DisplayPort input, and note any VRR restrictions.
  3. Check the source specification. Confirm the graphics hardware and the exact port’s supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations.
  4. Remove intermediate devices. Connect directly to the monitor to determine whether a dock, hub, or adapter is the bottleneck.
  5. Use a suitable cable. Match the cable’s stated capability to the required resolution and refresh rate.
  6. Select the mode. In Windows, use the Display and Advanced display controls. On PS5, run Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Test 1440p Output.
  7. Confirm the result on the monitor. Its information screen or on-screen display may show the incoming resolution and refresh rate. Check that it reports the mode you intended.

If the screen is blank or reports “out of range”

  • Reconnect the cable and select the monitor’s correct input.
  • Return to a lower refresh rate or resolution that the source previously displayed.
  • Try a direct connection instead of the dock or adapter.
  • Test another monitor input and another cable that meets the required specification.
  • Update or reinstall the graphics driver, then check the available modes again.

If QHD works but 144Hz is missing

  • Verify that the selected input, not just another input on the monitor, supports 144Hz at 2560×1440.
  • Check whether the cable or dock is limited to a lower refresh rate.
  • Inspect the source port specification; the graphics hardware may support QHD only at 60Hz.
  • For PS5, use 120Hz if the 1440p output test supports it; 144Hz is not a PS5 output mode.

If 144Hz is available but games run below it

The display can refresh at 144Hz while the PC renders fewer frames. Refresh capability and game performance are different measurements. Lower the game’s quality settings or use a lower target if the graphics hardware cannot sustain the desired frame rate; do not treat the monitor rating as a performance guarantee.

What to look for when comparing monitors

  • Input-specific QHD refresh rates: compare the specification for the HDMI or DisplayPort input you will actually use.
  • 1440p/120Hz over HDMI: make this explicit when the monitor is intended for PS5 use.
  • HDMI VRR support: verify it if variable refresh is important, because VRR behavior can differ by input.
  • Dock compatibility: if a laptop will run through a dock, compare the dock’s limit with the monitor’s and laptop’s limits.
  • Fallback modes: a display that accepts 1440p at 60Hz remains usable with a weaker or older source.

The safest purchase decision is based on the complete connection you will install, not the largest number printed on the monitor’s box. Confirm the source port, monitor input, cable, and any intermediate device before expecting a particular refresh rate.
