There is no evidence yet that a “PSP 3” handheld will deliver more frames per watt than a Steam Deck 2. The available sources establish neither device’s official specifications nor a matched efficiency test. Valve has described a goal of meaningfully improving performance and efficiency within a handheld power envelope, but that is a design aim—not a Steam Deck 2 specification or a measured result.
What is known about the PSP 3 and Steam Deck 2?
The claim in the headline is not established. The cited reporting treats Steam Deck 2 as a prospective successor and says it had not been officially announced when the article was published. It does not provide a final hardware configuration or efficiency result. Tom’s Guide’s Steam Deck 2 coverage also reports Valve designer Pierre-Loup Griffais discussing the company’s aspirations for a future device; those comments should not be read as specifications.

The sources here do not establish official specifications or FPS-per-watt test results for a PSP 3 handheld either. Sony’s August 20, 2026 sustainability update concerns PS5 power-saving measures, not a PSP 3 announcement, so it cannot confirm or rule out a separate announcement. Sony’s update is not evidence about a handheld’s performance.
What Valve has said about a future Deck
Tom’s Guide reports that at CES 2025, Valve SteamOS designer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the company wanted “bigger performance and power efficiency improvements” within an 8–15 watt power envelope. He also said Valve did not consider a 20–30% improvement meaningful enough for developers and users. These are reported design priorities, not promises that a specific improvement will be achieved, nor a statement of FPS per watt for a finished Steam Deck 2.

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
The same report quotes Griffais saying, “There is no Steam Deck 2 with Ryzen Z2,” in response to speculation about that chip. That reported comment does not identify the eventual processor or settle the device’s final design.
What the current Steam Deck specifications can—and cannot—tell us
Valve’s published specifications give useful context for its current hardware, but neither model’s published battery-life range or APU power range is an FPS-per-watt benchmark.

| Model | Valve-listed hardware and display | APU power | Battery and estimated gameplay |

These are manufacturer specifications from Valve’s LCD specification page and OLED specification page. Gameplay estimates depend on content. A longer battery estimate does not by itself prove higher efficiency: it can reflect battery capacity, workload, display use, power settings, or other factors. Likewise, an APU wattage range does not reveal how many frames a particular game produces at a given power draw.

FPS per watt is frame rate divided by power draw, but the result is meaningful only when both figures describe the same workload and the same power boundary. APU-only watts and whole-device watts are different denominators, so results using them cannot be treated as directly interchangeable.

A useful comparison between two handhelds would disclose and match, as far as possible:
- The same game version, scene, resolution, graphics settings, and frame cap.
- Whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled, and which settings are used.
- Whether power is measured at the APU or across the whole device.
- The measurement duration, average and sustained frame rates, and thermal conditions.
- Firmware and driver versions, since software can affect performance and power use.
Without those details, a single FPS-per-watt number can mislead. A device might show a higher short-term average but throttle under sustained heat, or appear more efficient because the test uses a lower resolution or different power measurement. The cited sources provide no such matched test for PSP 3 and Steam Deck 2.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What conclusion can be drawn now?
It is possible that a future Sony handheld could outperform a future Steam Deck on efficiency, but that is speculation, not a supported prediction. Until both devices have confirmed specifications and comparable test results, there is no defensible winner. The Steam Deck OLED is the documented current reference in the available sources—not a stand-in for either unreleased device.
