Wildlife Cameras in Guatemala Capture a Rare Margay—What We Know

Trail cameras in a remote Guatemalan cloud forest reportedly photographed a margay, a small wild cat. The account appears in a February 25, 2026 Green Matters report citing a Coral Maya Conservation Instagram post, but the exact match to the headline and the claim that this happens “once in a decade” are not independently confirmed.

What did the cameras capture?

The likely subject is a margay (Leopardus wiedii), according to Green Matters’ February 25, 2026 report. That article attributes the sighting to an Instagram post by Coral Maya Conservation. The primary post has not been independently verified here, so the identification and details should be treated as reported rather than confirmed from a scientific account.

The phrase “once-in-a-decade” is not an established frequency. No verified data in the available sources show how often margays are photographed in this forest or how many years typically separate sightings.

A separate, documented margay record in Guatemala

A peer-reviewed paper published in 2021 reports a different camera-trap record: one margay photographed in 2008 at the Mario Dary Rivera University Biotope for Quetzal Conservation in Baja Verapaz. The authors describe it as the first confirmed evidence of the species in the cloud forest of that specific biotope and, at the time of publication, the highest-altitude observation for the species in Guatemala. Those are local and time-bounded claims, not a description of the likely 2026 sighting.

Detail Earlier study
Location Mario Dary Rivera University Biotope for Quetzal Conservation, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala
Survey dates February 21 to March 8, 2008
Camera effort Seven camera traps over 16 consecutive days; 110 trap-nights reported
Margay result One record, at 1,770 metres elevation
Publication Moreira-Ramírez, García-Anleu, Ponce-Santizo and Mérida, 2021

The study’s details are published in “First record of margay (Leopardus wiedii) in cloud forest of Guatemala” in Therya Notes. Its 2008 fieldwork is not evidence for the timing or frequency of the separate report from 2026.

Why trail cameras matter for elusive wildlife

Remote cameras can record animals that are difficult to observe directly, including species active at night or around dawn and dusk. A photograph can document presence at a particular location and time; by itself, one image does not establish how many animals live there, whether a population is growing, or how often the species visits.

For the earlier biotope record, the authors recommended long-term camera-trap monitoring to investigate elusive nocturnal and crepuscular species and support conservation strategies. In their abstract, they specifically call for “long-term monitoring programs within the area using camera traps.” Repeated, sustained monitoring can provide a stronger basis for understanding wildlife presence than a single striking image.

What the “once-in-a-decade” wording can—and cannot—tell us

It is reasonable to describe a margay camera capture as notable, especially given the separate published record from the biotope. But the available evidence does not establish that this particular capture is the first in ten years, that margays are photographed only once a decade in Guatemala, or that it is a national rarity measured on a regular schedule. The headline’s wording should be read as a characterization, not a verified scientific statistic.

The cautious takeaway is that a margay was reportedly captured by cameras in a remote Guatemalan cloud forest, while a separate study documents an earlier margay image from a named Guatemalan biotope. The two events should not be merged, and the reported 2026 identification remains tied to secondary reporting.
