Each nesting bird is due to receive two H5 avian-influenza vaccine doses about three to four weeks apart, followed by monitoring. The birds showed no reported H5 disease signs when the operation began, so this is preventive conservation rather than treatment of a known outbreak.
What is happening on Albatross Island?
A government-permitted field team is capturing nesting shy albatrosses by hand, giving each selected bird an H5 vaccine dose, and planning a second visit to administer the booster. The official target is up to 100 birds, but weather, access and the need to complete both doses without undue disturbance could reduce the final number.

The field operation is scheduled to run for roughly three to four weeks during the breeding season. Tasmania’s wildlife guidance specifies the same three-to-four-week interval between doses, followed by at least two weeks of observation.

Why shy albatrosses are a priority
Shy albatrosses are threatened and Australia’s only endemic albatross. They breed on just three isolated Tasmanian islands: Albatross Island, Mewstone and Pedra Branca. The Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels describes Albatross Island as an 18-hectare Tasmanian State Nature Reserve.

H5 avian influenza is considered a particularly serious risk to threatened wildlife. H5N1 infects birds and some mammals associated with aquatic environments, including seabirds such as albatrosses. A severe outbreak in a species concentrated on only three breeding sites could have consequences well beyond individual sick birds.
Albatross Island is the only one of the three colonies accessible to people. That unusual access means staff can approach nesting birds, identify individuals, return to the same nests and deliver a second dose. Those conditions are not available for most free-ranging bird species.
How do you vaccinate a wild albatross?
- Select and approach nesting birds. Trained departmental personnel experienced in handling albatrosses capture birds by hand while they are on their nests.
- Assess each bird. Staff check and weigh the bird before vaccination. An experienced wildlife veterinarian oversees the medical procedure.
- Give the first dose. A staff member holds the bird securely while the veterinarian or supervised personnel administer the approved vaccine.
- Mark the study bird. Temporary non-toxic paint and numbered nest markers identify vaccinated individuals and show which nests require a return visit.
- Return for the second dose. Crews use the marks and records to find the same birds three to four weeks later, subject to safe access and acceptable disturbance levels.
- Monitor outcomes. Officials observe birds after vaccination and use remote cameras and follow-up visits to assess behavior, survival and the practical response to the program.
Animal-ethics approval, wildlife permits, biosecurity rules, trained handlers and veterinary oversight govern the work. Tasmania’s standing guidance warns that vaccinating wild birds is impractical for most species and that current permit conditions restrict which species may be vaccinated.

Have the shy albatrosses caught bird flu?
No H5 disease signs were reported in the breeding colonies when the vaccination program began. That statement describes the starting situation, not a guarantee that infection cannot occur later.
A Tasmanian government H5 update issued on 7 October 2026, with data current to 8 October, recorded 46 H5 bird-flu events. At that dated snapshot, officials reported no mass mortalities and no H5 detection in Tasmanian poultry. Event totals can change as surveillance finds new cases, so the date matters.
The Australian environment department describes H5 avian influenza as a significant risk to wildlife, ecosystems and especially threatened species. Vaccinating before an outbreak is therefore intended to reduce vulnerability rather than respond to confirmed disease on the island.

Is this the first albatross bird-flu vaccination?
Tasmania’s Environment Minister Guy Barnett called it “the first known attempt anywhere in the world to vaccinate albatrosses against H5 bird flu.” The claim refers to a known effort involving albatrosses; it does not mean every possible historical wildlife-vaccine experiment has been ruled out.
“This is a unique opportunity because these birds can be safely approached while nesting, allowing us to provide the required two doses of vaccine for each bird over a three-to-four-week period and monitor individual birds in a way that’s not possible for many wild species,” Barnett said.
Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said the Australian Government has invested almost $2 million since 2024 preparing to use vaccination to help protect vulnerable native birds.

What the pilot is designed to find out
The project is not only a protective intervention. It is also a feasibility study intended to establish whether a larger population-level strategy could be carried out safely and reliably.
Remote cameras and later visits will help biologists examine how vaccinated birds behave, whether marked individuals remain at their nests, and whether the team can locate the same birds for the booster without excessive disruption. The records can also show how many birds complete both doses and what level of staffing, access and biosecurity a wider effort would require.
“This controlled vaccination program will help inform future decisions about whether a more comprehensive vaccination strategy could feasibly be used at a population level to play a role in protecting shy albatross from the impacts of H5 bird flu,” NRE Tas wildlife biologist Sheryl Hamilton said.

Will the vaccine protect the whole colony?
Not by itself. A target of up to 100 birds is a limited sample from a colony, and vaccination does not immunize unhandled birds, birds on the other two breeding islands, or future birds that join the breeding population. Protection at population scale would require evidence that the vaccine produces a useful response, that the second dose can be delivered consistently, and that repeated handling does not harm breeding success.
Any expansion would also have to address the features that make this island unusual: a reachable colony, predictable nesting locations, the ability to identify individuals and return within the dose interval, and enough trained staff and veterinary supervision. Those constraints explain why officials are testing the method here rather than proposing routine vaccination of wild birds generally.
What happens next?
- Crews complete first and second doses where weather and access permit.
- At least two weeks of post-vaccination monitoring follows the dosing period.
- Remote cameras and return visits collect longer-term observations.
- Animal-ethics and permit requirements continue to govern handling and biosecurity.
- Officials use the results to decide whether a broader shy-albatross vaccination strategy is technically and ethically feasible.
Readers cannot safely reproduce this work: the vaccine, handling equipment, permits and veterinary controls are regulated, project-specific inputs. The intervention is being conducted by trained wildlife personnel under government oversight.
