English Wikipedia does not prohibit every use of AI. Its guidance bars editors from using large language models to generate or rewrite article content, with narrow exceptions for human-reviewed copyediting and separately governed translation. Volunteers also have a speedy-deletion route for articles made up mainly of AI slop—but writing style alone is not proof of AI use, and the rule is not shared automatically by every Wikipedia.
What “war on AI slop” means
The phrase describes two related responses by English Wikipedia’s volunteer community: a rule restricting LLM-generated or rewritten article text, and cleanup procedures for suspected or clearly qualifying material. It is not a ban on every AI tool across Wikimedia, nor is it an automated system that detects and removes AI-written pages.

The distinction matters because Wikimedia has two different roles in this debate. Volunteer editors and administrators write, review and govern Wikipedia content. The Wikimedia Foundation provides technology and legal support, and has separately explored AI tools to assist volunteer workflows.
What English Wikipedia’s LLM guidance allows—and prohibits
English Wikipedia’s Writing articles with large language models page is a content guideline. It prohibits using LLMs to generate or rewrite article content, except for specified cases. The stated concern is that generated text can breach Wikipedia’s content requirements, including by making claims that are not supported by reliable sources.

Basic copyediting suggestions
An editor may ask an LLM to suggest basic copyedits to that editor’s own writing. The editor must review the suggestions and may incorporate them only if the model has not added content of its own. The guideline warns: “Caution is required, because LLMs can go beyond what you ask of them and change the meaning of the text such that it is not supported by the sources cited.”
Translation
Translating material into English Wikipedia is covered by separate LLM-assisted translation guidance, rather than treated as ordinary copyediting. Editors need to follow that guidance for translation work.

ChatGPT and other chatbots
The guidance concerns what an LLM does, not a particular brand of chatbot. Using ChatGPT or another model to draft or rewrite article prose falls under the restriction on generated or rewritten content; using a model for permitted copyedit suggestions remains subject to human review and the no-new-content condition.

How suspected AI slop is handled
In August 2025, English Wikipedia expanded its speedy-deletion process to include articles consisting mainly of AI-slop content. Speedy deletion allows administrators to remove pages that meet qualifying criteria without the ordinary deletion discussion. The process involves a nomination that puts the article into a queue for administrator review; it is not an automatic AI-detection verdict.

Wikipedia editors have also organized volunteer cleanup work. The Washington Post reported on 8 August 2025 that WikiProject AI Cleanup, formed in 2023, had a review list of more than 500 articles suspected of AI writing. That is a count of suspected pages listed for review at the time of the report—not a confirmed count of AI-generated articles or an estimate of how much of Wikipedia was affected.
The same report described examples of errors in suspected AI-written pages, including an article that confused an Argentine hotel with a similarly named village and a fictitious Ottoman fortress article that remained unflagged for almost a year. Wikimedia Foundation director of product for core experiences Marshall Miller told the newspaper, “I like to think of it as like an immune system.” That is Miller’s metaphor for community review, not a measured success rate.

Why style alone cannot establish AI use
English Wikipedia’s guideline cautions that some people naturally write in ways that resemble LLM output. A prose pattern or linguistic tell is not, on its own, enough to justify sanctions. The guideline says editors should also consider whether policies were violated and examine recent editing behavior.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That approach separates an editorial problem from an accusation about how text was produced. Editors can assess whether a claim is verifiable, whether its sources are reliable and whether the prose accurately reflects those sources. A chatbot-like style may prompt scrutiny, but it does not prove that a person used AI.

The Foundation’s AI strategy is separate from the editing rule
In an April 2025 strategy statement, Wikimedia Foundation authors Chris Albon, Director of Machine Learning, and Leila Zia, Head of Research, described possible AI support for moderators and patrollers doing tedious tasks, tools to help editors find information on Wikipedia, and translation or adaptation that can help share local perspectives. They emphasized human agency, transparency, open-source or open-weight AI, and multilingual needs.
The statement does not establish a Foundation policy permitting AI-generated article prose, and the English Wikipedia guideline does not amount to a ban on the Foundation developing workflow tools. As the Foundation explains, it supports Wikipedia with technology and legal services but does not write or control its content; volunteer editors do. The Foundation has said, “The community of volunteers behind Wikipedia is the most important and unique element of Wikipedia’s success.”
Does the rule apply to every Wikipedia?
No. The LLM guidance discussed here applies to English Wikipedia. Wikimedia projects set their own policies, and approaches differ across language editions and other projects. Meta-Wiki’s AI policy inventory records project-specific rules; a proposed global policy remains a draft, not a rule automatically binding every project.
The timeline also matters. A 2026 review in AI & SOCIETY describes roughly thirty months—from late 2022 to mid-2025—when Wikipedia had no AI-specific policy or guideline, relying instead on a non-binding essay and case-by-case application of existing policies. The current English-language guidance and deletion procedure developed later; they should not be read as a policy that all Wikimedia projects adopted when generative AI tools first appeared.
What is known about whether the response works
The available evidence establishes that English Wikipedia has a content guideline, a speedy-deletion criterion for qualifying AI-slop articles, and volunteer review efforts. It does not establish a reliable rate for detecting AI-generated text, quantify how much Wikipedia content is AI-generated, or show that the rules have eliminated AI-related errors. The reported review-list figure is a snapshot of suspected pages, not an audited measure of prevalence or effectiveness.
