It has no advertising business, subscription paywall or sale of readers’ personal data. Its immediate finances are solid, but its long-term resilience depends on whether people keep contributing, visiting and funding a service increasingly consumed indirectly by search engines and AI systems.
How Wikipedia became global infrastructure
A volunteer experiment at unusual scale
Wikipedia’s defining innovation was not simply publishing an online encyclopedia. It let volunteers create, revise and debate entries in public, with changes tracked and corrected over time. That model made coverage expand far beyond what a conventional editorial staff could produce, while also making accuracy a continuing community process rather than a one-time publication decision.

As the projects matured, the Wikimedia Foundation became the nonprofit institution responsible for operating the sites, funding servers and staff, defending the projects’ legal and technical interests, and supporting the communities that write them. The result is a hybrid: a professionally run infrastructure organization supporting a largely volunteer knowledge-production system.

Early growth depended on people opening Wikipedia directly. Today, its material is also read through search results, voice assistants, data feeds and generative-AI systems. That broader reach makes Wikimedia content more important to the internet, but it can make Wikipedia itself less visible. A reader who receives an answer elsewhere may never see the article, its citations, its edit history or the donation appeal that helps fund the system.

Who pays for Wikipedia?
The Wikimedia Foundation is a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Its funding explainer says the vast majority of support comes from readers, supplemented by major gifts, investment income, the Wikimedia Endowment and paid services for large-scale reusers. Wikipedia does not rely on advertising, subscription fees or selling users’ personal data.
The audited financial picture
For the financial year ending June 30, 2025, the Foundation reported $208,567,153 in revenue, including $189,500,000 in donations, and $190,938,007 in expenses. At that date, reserves and other assets totaled $296,550,030, described in the audited FAQ as just over 17 months of operating expenses.
| Measure | FY2024–2025 figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $208,567,153 | Audited Foundation figure for the year ended June 30, 2025 |
| Donations | $189,500,000 | The dominant source of that year’s revenue |
| Total expenses | $190,938,007 | Audited spending for the same financial year |
| Reserves and other assets | $296,550,030 | Balance at June 30, 2025; just over 17 months of operating expenses |
Why the donation banners continue
A strong balance sheet does not remove the need for recurring income. Servers, security, software development, legal work and staff are ongoing costs, while traffic and regulatory conditions can change quickly. Donations also provide a comparatively flexible source of money for volunteer support, privacy protection and emergency responses. The annual financial FAQ specifically notes declining reader traffic and increasing regulatory challenges as reasons reserves matter for sustainability.

The Endowment
The Endowment was created in 2016 to provide a permanent financial base. The Foundation describes it this way: “The Wikimedia Endowment was established in 2016 as a permanent safekeeping fund to generate income to support the operations and activities of the Wikimedia projects in perpetuity.” It is intended to complement, not immediately replace, annual fundraising.
Why a financially healthy project can still be fragile
AI reuse can weaken the visitor-and-donor loop
The Foundation’s 2024–2025 annual plan states: “Wikimedia projects are becoming more vital to the knowledge infrastructure of the internet, while simultaneously becoming less visible to internet users.” Large language models and other services can ingest Wikimedia content, summarize it and answer questions without sending users to the original page. Fewer direct visits can mean fewer opportunities for readers to inspect sources, correct errors, join the community or donate.
Automated access is expensive
Not all traffic costs the same. Wikimedia says 65% of its most expensive traffic comes from high-volume reusers such as generative-AI systems. Automated requests can consume bandwidth, storage, caching capacity and engineering attention even when the people benefiting from the output never visit Wikimedia sites. This creates a mismatch between public value and who bears the infrastructure cost.

Human capacity remains essential
Articles do not maintain themselves. Volunteers resolve disputes, monitor vandalism, update statistics, translate material and enforce community policies. Recruitment, newcomer retention and administrator capacity therefore matter as much as server uptime. The Foundation’s annual report also highlights the personal risks contributors can face on politically sensitive topics; privacy tools and safety programs are operational necessities, not optional extras.

Wikipedia’s credibility depends on processes such as neutral-point-of-view rules, citations, transparent edit histories and community review. Those processes are contested when subjects are politically charged or when false material is deliberately weaponized. The annual plan identifies contested veracity, weaponized content and regulation that differs by jurisdiction as major external trends. Compliance can require legal analysis and product changes country by country, increasing cost and complexity.
Revenue is still concentrated
The Foundation is diversifying, but donations remain the largest source of income. That concentration makes the organization sensitive to changes in public attention, household budgets, fundraising conversion and the amount of traffic that reaches Wikimedia pages directly. Reserves provide time to adapt; they do not guarantee that the same revenue mix will work indefinitely.

Can Wikipedia survive without human editors?
AI can help identify duplicate text, suggest translations, flag possible vandalism or make large archives easier to search. It cannot by itself supply the legitimacy and accountability that come from identifiable communities debating sources, applying editorial rules and accepting responsibility for corrections. A model trained on yesterday’s articles cannot reliably decide whether a new claim is well sourced, whether a living person’s biography is fair or how a disputed historical interpretation should be represented.
The more plausible future is cooperative: automation handles repetitive detection and assistance, while people set policies, investigate sources, resolve disputes and decide what should be published. That future requires better newcomer pathways, protection for vulnerable contributors and enough administrators to keep review systems functioning.

What Wikimedia is doing about the pressure
Charging high-volume reusers
Wikimedia Enterprise, created in 2021, is an opt-in paid service for organizations that need Wikimedia content at large scale. The Foundation says: “It is an opt-in product that allows companies to use Wikipedia content at scale and sustainably without severely taxing Wikipedia’s servers, while also enabling them to support our nonprofit mission.” The approach seeks to align heavy users’ infrastructure demands with a source of funding, while ordinary readers retain free access.
Best Value
Investing in programs and reliability
The 2025–2026 budget overview says 77% of planned spending is programmatic. It lists 647 staff as of December 31, 2024, supporting areas such as engineering, fundraising, legal work, contributor assistance, safety and community programs. Those expenses are the machinery behind a service that users experience as a simple free website.
Building financial shock absorbers
Recurring donations, investment income, the Endowment and paid Enterprise access give Wikimedia more options than a single annual appeal. The trade-off is that every new revenue stream must be managed without compromising editorial independence or the projects’ public-service purpose.
What to watch in Wikipedia’s next phase
| System | Key question | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Money | Can Enterprise, Endowment income and recurring gifts grow without displacing broad reader support? | More diversified income would reduce dependence on donation campaigns. |
| People | Are newcomers, administrators and high-risk contributors being supported and kept safe? | Volunteer labor remains the core production capacity. |
| Distribution | Will AI and search products send value and sustainable access back to the source? | Visibility affects corrections, participation and donations. |
| Trust | Can community governance withstand misinformation, political pressure and divergent laws? | Reliability depends on both editorial process and legal room to operate. |
| Infrastructure | Can servers and data services handle costly automated demand efficiently? | High-volume reuse can raise expenses even when direct readership falls. |
Wikipedia is not in immediate financial trouble: its audited reserves cover more than a year of current operating costs. Its fragility is systemic. The project must keep people willing and able to edit, persuade readers to support infrastructure they may encounter indirectly, charge or otherwise manage costly reuse, and preserve trust while regulation and automated distribution reshape the internet.
