WiiM speakers vs Sonos: which multi-room system is right for you?

The right choice depends on what you already own and how you listen. WiiM combines its own wireless speakers with streaming components and amplifiers for passive speakers. Sonos sells an app-managed family of speakers and other network-audio products. Each system can group compatible products within its own ecosystem, but the documentation here does not establish native, unified grouping between WiiM and Sonos.

Start by checking four things for the exact models you would buy: whether your music services and casting method are supported, whether you need a wired source such as a turntable, whether you already own passive speakers, and what the complete multi-room configuration costs in your country. Official product pages provide specifications and features, not a controlled listening test or an apples-to-apples whole-home price comparison, so there is no evidence-based universal winner for sound quality or value.

The short answer

Choose the WiiM path when you want flexibility between a self-contained wireless speaker and a network amplifier for speakers you already own. The WiiM Sound page describes a wireless speaker, while WiiM Amp is a streaming amplifier intended for passive speakers. That lets you build a room around existing hi-fi equipment instead of replacing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Sonos path when you want to stay inside Sonos’s app-managed product family. The Sonos Era 100 is a standalone Wi-Fi speaker with Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 and Sonos-app control. Sonos also offers products such as Amp and Port for other system layouts, but each model has different inputs and outputs.

If your priority is a specific service, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, a turntable or another physical source, verify the exact model before buying. A feature listed for one WiiM device should not be assumed on every WiiM product, and the same caution applies across the Sonos range.

What “multi-room” means in each ecosystem

WiiM groups use a leader-and-follower model

WiiM’s multi-room documentation describes groups made from compatible WiiM devices. One device acts as the leader and the others follow its playback. The company documents creating, managing and ungrouping these groups in its app. Read the WiiM Multi-Room Management System article for the current model and software support list.

That structure matters when you mix product types. A WiiM Sound and a WiiM Amp may be useful in the same home, but compatibility depends on the particular hardware and firmware. WiiM also documents distributing inputs between WiiM devices, with the usable input determined by the device that has it; see its multi-room input guidance before planning around a line-in or digital source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sonos groups and zones are app-managed

Sonos lets you group rooms temporarily and create semi-permanent zones. Its support page says, “You can easily group and ungroup your Sonos products at any time using your Sonos app.” Treat that as vendor guidance about the app workflow, not as independent evidence that Sonos is easier than WiiM. Sonos states that a zone can contain two to 16 supported products managed under one listing with unified controls; the current rules are in Sonos’s zone documentation.

WiiM and Sonos are separate ecosystems

Nothing in the cited product documentation establishes that a WiiM speaker and a Sonos speaker can join one native group and stay synchronized through their respective apps. You can use both brands in the same home as separate systems, but plan on separate grouping and control unless a particular third-party method is explicitly supported for the exact devices.

Hardware paths: speaker replacement or component upgrade?

WiiM Sound: an all-in-one room speaker

WiiM Sound is presented as a wireless speaker with network streaming and multi-room capability. Its current product page lists playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz and more than 20 streaming services, with examples including Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, TIDAL, Qobuz and Deezer. Those are manufacturer specifications and service listings; they do not demonstrate that the speaker will sound better than an equivalent Sonos product. Service availability can vary by region and device.

The same page lists Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Alexa Cast, Google Cast, Roon and DLNA. WiiM’s separate support index documents AirPlay 2 and Google Cast for supported devices. Confirm that the specific WiiM model you select has the protocol you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WiiM Amp: keep passive speakers you already own

WiiM Amp is a streaming amplifier for passive speakers. You supply the speakers, connect them to the amplifier, and use WiiM’s network and app features for streaming and room grouping where supported. This route is relevant if you already like your bookshelf or floor-standing speakers, or if you need a conventional speaker placement that an all-in-one wireless speaker does not provide.

  • Control made simple – Manage playback and settings easily through the WiiM Home App, voice control via Alexa or Google Assistant (with compatible devices), and physical buttons on the speaker—streamlined design, no screen or remote needed.

Before buying, match the amplifier to your speakers’ impedance, power requirements, room size and available inputs. The cited product material establishes WiiM Amp’s role as a streaming amplifier, but it does not provide a universal room-by-room recommendation or a controlled comparison with Sonos hardware.

Sonos Era 100: a standalone Sonos room

The Era 100 product page identifies Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 and Sonos-app control. It is a self-contained speaker, so no separate amplifier or passive-speaker wiring is required. Other Sonos products, including Amp and Port, address different layouts; compare their inputs and outputs rather than treating the Era 100 specification as representative of the entire range.

The United States Era 100 page displayed US$219 when accessed in 2026. That is a time- and market-specific listing, not a guaranteed current price, worldwide MSRP or evidence that a complete Sonos system costs less or more than a WiiM system.

Feature and compatibility comparison

Question WiiM path Sonos path
What can you buy? WiiM Sound wireless speaker; WiiM Amp streaming amplifier for passive speakers. Other WiiM models have their own capabilities. Era 100 standalone speaker, plus other Sonos speakers and components such as Amp and Port.
How are rooms grouped? WiiM app groups with a leader and followers; supported devices and grouping behavior vary by model. Sonos app grouping and semi-permanent zones; Sonos says zones support two to 16 supported products.
AirPlay 2 Documented by WiiM for compatible products; verify the exact model in the support material. Listed for Era 100.
Google Cast Listed on the WiiM Sound page and documented for supported devices; confirm model compatibility. Not stated for Era 100 in the cited product material.
Bluetooth Not established for WiiM Sound by the cited page; check the individual model. Listed for Era 100.
Roon and DLNA Listed for WiiM Sound. Not stated for Era 100 in the cited material.
Turntable connection Check the exact WiiM device’s physical inputs and the documented multi-room input compatibility. Era 100 requires the separately sold Sonos Line-In Adapter; a turntable needs suitable phono preamplification.
Price evidence available here No comparable WiiM system price is established. US$219 was displayed for Era 100 on the US page when accessed in 2026; verify the current local listing.

Streaming services and control methods

Make a list of the services and control methods you actually use before comparing devices. WiiM Sound’s page names more than 20 services and gives examples, but support can vary by country and model. A service appearing on the WiiM Sound page should not be silently generalized to every WiiM component.

For an iPhone or Mac, AirPlay 2 is the key check. Era 100 lists AirPlay 2 directly. WiiM’s support documentation lists AirPlay 2 for compatible products, so look up the model number rather than assuming every WiiM device is an AirPlay receiver.

If you cast from Android or a browser using Google Cast, check the same model-level limitation. WiiM Sound lists Google Cast, while WiiM’s support index covers supported devices more broadly. The cited Era 100 page does not list Google Cast, so do not plan on that protocol for Era 100 without separate confirmation.

Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Qobuz Connect are distinct from Bluetooth and from app-based playback. Connect services hand playback control to the network speaker; Bluetooth sends audio from a paired device. Choose the method that fits your household, and check whether every room device supports it.

Using speakers you already own

When WiiM Amp is the natural starting point

If you have passive speakers in one or more rooms, price a WiiM Amp-based system first. You may need one amplifier per room or another arrangement that the manufacturer supports. Account for speaker condition, cable runs, stands and any source components in the complete configuration.

Check the speakers’ electrical requirements and the amplifier’s documented limits before purchase. The goal is a safe, compatible pairing, not simply the lowest component price. If your speakers are powered, active or use a proprietary connection, they are not the same use case as passive speakers and may require a different WiiM component.

When a standalone Sonos speaker is simpler for the hardware layout

An Era 100 is self-contained: place it, connect it to Wi-Fi, add it in the Sonos app and group it with compatible Sonos products. If you already own passive speakers, however, compare the Sonos product designed to drive them rather than comparing an Era 100 alone with a WiiM Amp. The components solve different physical problems.

Connecting a turntable or another wired source

Era 100 requirements

Era 100 line-in requires a separately sold Sonos Line-In Adapter. Sonos’s Era 100 guide specifies that a turntable must have a built-in phono preamp or be connected through an appropriate external preamp before reaching the speaker’s line input. A turntable with only a raw phono-level output will not be ready to plug directly into the adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget for the adapter and any phono preamp, and verify that the turntable’s output level and cable format match the chosen Sonos input path. The adapter’s price is not established by the cited material, so check the current listing in your market.

WiiM input planning

WiiM’s multi-room help describes distributing several inputs across WiiM devices, but the available input differs by model. Inspect the rear-panel specifications and the model-specific support article for the exact device you plan to use. Confirm whether the source can be shared to the rooms you want and whether the connection is analog, optical, USB or another supported format; do not infer an input from the WiiM Sound feature list alone.

How to set up a WiiM multi-room group

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check the current model list and protocol notes in the WiiM support index. Put compatible devices on the same home network.
  2. Add each device in the WiiM app. Complete the network and room setup for every WiiM speaker or component before attempting to group them.
  3. Create the group. Use the app’s multi-room grouping control, select one device as the leader and add the other compatible devices as followers. The leader supplies the group’s playback control.
  4. Choose the source. Start playback from a supported service, cast method or physical input. If the source is wired, confirm that the device carrying that input is supported for multi-room distribution.
  5. Adjust or remove rooms. Return to the group controls to add or remove followers or to ungroup the devices. If a room disappears, verify its model support and network connection before rebuilding the group.

Alexa-based grouping or another casting method can have its own compatibility rules. Treat those as an additional check, not as proof that every WiiM product can join every type of group.

How to group Sonos rooms and create a zone

  1. Add the products to Sonos. Set up each speaker or component in the Sonos app and give rooms clear names.
  2. Group rooms for a listening session. From the room view, use the app’s Group control, select the rooms you want to play together and start the source.
  3. Create a semi-permanent zone when appropriate. Follow the steps in Sonos’s zone guide to manage supported products as one listing. Sonos documents two to 16 products per zone.
  4. Ungroup or edit. Use the app to remove rooms from a temporary group or change the products assigned to a zone. The available controls can depend on the product combination.
  5. Use Bluetooth with care. Era 100 supports Bluetooth, but Bluetooth playback and Sonos network grouping are separate functions. If you want to share Bluetooth audio through the system, consult Sonos’s current Bluetooth-sharing instructions for supported products and limitations.

Core room hardware WiiM Sound, or WiiM Amp plus compatible passive speakers; exact prices are not established here. Era 100 or another Sonos product matched to the room; Era 100’s US page displayed US$219 when accessed in 2026.
Existing-speaker equipment Include WiiM Amp and any speaker or cable purchases only when you do not already own suitable passive speakers. Use a Sonos amplifier product when driving passive speakers; do not substitute Era 100 in the calculation.
Wired-source accessories Include any adapter, preamp or cable required by the specific WiiM input. Include the separately sold Era 100 Line-In Adapter and a phono preamp if the turntable lacks one.
Additional rooms Price one compatible device or amplifier-speaker combination per room, then verify grouping support. Price one compatible Sonos product per room and account for the two-to-16-product zone rules where relevant.
Regional and timing effects Check your local listing and taxes. The US$219 figure is US-specific and volatile; check the current listing in your country.

No cited source provides a comparable whole-home price study. A lower entry price for one component would not prove a lower total cost once speakers, adapters, preamps, taxes and additional rooms are included.

Decision guide by listening situation

You already own good passive speakers

Investigate WiiM Amp first because it is explicitly designed as a streaming amplifier for passive speakers. Compare it with the Sonos amplifier product that matches your connection needs, not with Era 100. Check electrical compatibility, inputs and the number of rooms before deciding.

You want a new, self-contained speaker in one or more rooms

Compare WiiM Sound and Sonos Era 100 on the services and control methods you use. WiiM Sound lists high-resolution playback, more than 20 services and several casting options; Era 100 lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 and Sonos-app control. Those feature lists describe capability, not a sound-quality ranking.

Your household uses iPhones and Macs

Era 100 supports AirPlay 2. WiiM supports AirPlay 2 on compatible products, so verify each model in WiiM’s support material. If different rooms require different protocols, choose devices that share the control method your household actually uses.

You rely on Google Cast

WiiM Sound lists Google Cast, with broader support documented by model in WiiM’s support index. The cited Era 100 page does not list Google Cast. Confirm current Sonos compatibility before making Google Cast a purchase requirement.

You want a turntable in the multi-room setup

For Era 100, plan on the Line-In Adapter and suitable phono preamplification. For WiiM, identify the exact input-equipped device and verify multi-room distribution in the input guidance. The physical signal path is more important than the brand name.

You want one group containing both brands

Do not buy on that assumption. The cited documentation describes grouping inside each ecosystem and does not establish native WiiM-Sonos grouping. Treat them as separate systems unless the exact products and a supported integration explicitly say otherwise.

Common pitfalls and fixes

A feature appears on a product page but not on your chosen model

Return to the model-specific support page and confirm the protocol, service or input. WiiM’s lineup is not covered by one universal feature set, and Sonos products have different connection options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A speaker does not appear when you try to group rooms

Check that it is on the same network, has completed setup and is a supported member of that ecosystem’s group. A WiiM device will not become a Sonos group member merely because both are connected to the same router.

The turntable is silent or very quiet

On Era 100, confirm the Line-In Adapter is installed and that the turntable has a built-in phono preamp or an external one. On WiiM, verify that the selected device actually has the required input and that the source level matches it.

AirPlay or casting is missing

Check the exact model’s support documentation rather than relying on a lineup-wide claim. WiiM identifies AirPlay 2 and Google Cast as supported on compatible devices; Era 100’s listed controls include AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth.

The system seems cheaper when viewed one product at a time

Recalculate with every room, adapter, phono preamp, passive speaker and tax included. The available evidence does not establish a universal lower-cost system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

WiiM is the more adaptable path to investigate when you want both wireless speakers and streaming amplification for passive speakers, or when a specific combination of Connect, Cast, Roon, DLNA or other services is central to your setup. Sonos is the more relevant path when you want a dedicated Sonos app ecosystem with products such as Era 100 and documented grouping and zone controls.

Neither choice has an evidence-backed universal advantage in sound quality or total-system price. Match the exact model to your services, protocol, physical inputs, existing speakers and room count, then verify local pricing and compatibility before ordering.
