Wii Virtual Console vs. Nintendo Switch Online: What’s the Difference?

Wii Virtual Console was a buy-to-own download store; Nintendo Switch Online is a subscription library. On the Wii, you used Wii Points to purchase individual classic games from the Wii Shop Channel. On Switch, eligible members download catalog apps and can play the included games only while their Nintendo Switch Online membership is active. Wii and Wii U purchases do not become Switch entitlements, and Nintendo has not announced a return of the Virtual Console brand.

The short answer

The two services deliver retro games in fundamentally different ways:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Wii Virtual Console: an online storefront where each game was purchased separately with Wii Points and downloaded to the console.
  • Nintendo Switch Online classic libraries: a membership benefit. You download the relevant Nintendo Classics application, then play the games included with your active plan.

The Wii Shop Channel opened in December 2006 and stopped accepting new software purchases on January 30, 2019. Nintendo Switch Online does not replace those purchases or import them. If you bought a Wii Virtual Console title, that purchase remains tied to the Wii-era system and account ecosystem; Nintendo says Wii and Wii U eShop purchases do not carry over to Switch.

That distinction matters when deciding whether to keep an old Wii, buy a Switch for retro games, renew a membership, or look for a separately sold re-release.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How the access models differ

Wii Virtual Console was an individual-purchase storefront

Virtual Console games appeared in the Wii Shop Channel alongside other Wii software. You bought Wii Points, exchanged them for a particular game, and downloaded that title. The game was not dependent on a recurring membership. Once downloaded, it was treated as one of your Wii Shop purchases, subject to the shop’s account, console and transfer rules.

Nintendo’s Wii documentation lists classic systems such as Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES), Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 among the platforms represented, although the exact catalog depended on availability and region. A platform’s appearance in the service did not mean every game for that platform was offered.

Switch Online is access to curated libraries

Switch Online distributes classic games through software applications rather than individual transactions. The application is available to members, and the catalog is controlled by Nintendo. Nintendo’s FAQ says classic games are not planned for individual sale outside the service, so downloading an app does not create a permanent, separately purchased license for every title inside it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical result is simple: Wii Virtual Console asked, “Which game do you want to buy?” Switch Online asks, “Which library tier do you want access to?”

What happened to the Wii Shop Channel?

Nintendo’s discontinuation notice gives two important dates:

Event Date What it means
Wii Points could no longer be added or redeemed March 26, 2018 New points-based purchases were no longer possible.
Wii Shop software purchases ended January 30, 2019 The storefront stopped accepting new software purchases.

Nintendo describes the Wii Shop Channel as having been available since December 2006 and closing on January 30, 2019. The same support notice said previously purchased content could be redownloaded and transferred to Wii U “for the time being,” while warning that Nintendo would announce a later end date for those services. That page does not establish the current live status of Wii redownloads or transfers. Therefore, do not assume that a redownload will work today without checking Nintendo’s latest support information for your region and console.

The closure affects new purchases, not the historical fact that Wii Virtual Console used a purchase model. It also does not turn old purchases into Switch games.

Which systems are included with each Switch Online tier?

Nintendo groups the classic libraries by membership level. Catalogs and hardware restrictions can change, and availability can vary by country, so check the current Nintendo account page for your market before subscribing.

Switch Online access Classic systems identified by Nintendo Important condition
Standard Nintendo Switch Online membership NES, Super NES and Game Boy Requires an active standard membership.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy Requires the Expansion Pack tier; the Nintendo 64 library also has a Mature 17+ collection.
Expansion Pack on Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo GameCube, in addition to the Expansion Pack libraries GameCube classics are playable only on Switch 2.

Nintendo’s support information lists Virtual Boy software as available only in the United States and Canada and says it will not appear on Switch Lite. Treat those as region-and-hardware requirements, not universal Switch features. A title can also be unavailable in a particular country even when its system library exists there.

What happens when a Switch Online membership ends?

Switch Online classic games are not permanent purchases. Nintendo says access requires an active membership. If the membership lapses, the classic applications and their games can no longer be played through the service. Nintendo also says save data remains on the console, so renewing later can restore access to the saved progress if the relevant game and membership are still supported.

Offline play is supported, but it is not an indefinite workaround for an expired membership. Nintendo requires the console to verify the membership online at least once every seven days. Before a trip, open the classic application while the console is online and keep the membership active; if the seven-day verification window passes without a check, the service can require an internet connection before play resumes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the key ownership trade-off:

  • With Wii Virtual Console, the original transaction was for a specific download rather than a recurring library subscription.
  • With Switch Online, one membership can expose many games, but access is conditional on the plan remaining active.

Do Wii Virtual Console purchases transfer to Switch?

No. Nintendo explicitly says Wii and Wii U eShop purchases do not carry over to Switch. Switch also does not play older-console digital or physical games as a general backward-compatibility feature. A Wii Virtual Console purchase therefore cannot be used as proof of ownership for the corresponding Switch Online game.

Do not confuse two different transfer concepts:

Wii-to-Wii U transfer

Nintendo documented a transfer process from Wii to Wii U that could include Virtual Console titles and save data, with stated exclusions. That was a move within the Wii family and did not create a Switch license.

Wii or Wii U to Switch

Nintendo separately states that Wii and Wii U eShop purchases do not carry over to Switch. There is no Nintendo account step that converts the old purchase into a Switch Online entitlement.

If you want to play the same classic game on Switch, the available route depends on Nintendo’s current catalog: it may be in a Switch Online library, sold as a separate eShop release, included in a packaged collection, or unavailable on Switch. Nintendo identifies all of those as distinct ways older games can appear on newer systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the games the same on both services?

There is overlap in the platforms and individual titles, but the services are not identical catalogs. Wii Virtual Console exposed a historical selection across several systems, including TurboGrafx-16. Switch Online’s current system groupings include Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy and, on Switch 2, GameCube—systems that were not all part of the Wii Virtual Console lineup.

Catalogs are curated and can differ by territory. A game that was sold on Wii may not be in the Switch application; a Switch Online title may never have been offered through the Wii Shop in your region. Nintendo can also add games, so a title-by-title comparison should use the current official library list rather than assumptions based on the old Wii catalog.

Regional licensing, content ratings and hardware restrictions explain some differences. For example, Nintendo identifies a Mature 17+ Nintendo 64 collection within Expansion Pack and limits Virtual Boy availability to the United States and Canada. Those details are separate from the basic question of whether a game was once available on Wii.

How online features differ

The Wii Shop sources establish the purchase and download model but do not provide a like-for-like specification for online play in every Virtual Console title. Do not assume that a game’s original Wii release had the same multiplayer options now offered through Switch Online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo describes online play as an added feature of its Switch classic libraries. Depending on the application and game, members can use online multiplayer or other communication features. On Switch 2, Nintendo also describes GameChat support for compatible experiences. These features are service capabilities, not evidence that every classic title supports online play or that the original Wii version did.

Use the individual game’s information screen for the exact multiplayer mode, player count and communication requirements. A membership may be necessary for the online function even when the same game can be played locally or offline.

What you actually download on Switch

Switch Online classic games are delivered as library applications. You download the application for the system family you want to use—such as NES, Super NES, Game Boy or Nintendo 64—then launch it with the account that has the eligible membership. The game files are part of that service application, not separate purchases in the eShop.

  1. Confirm that your Nintendo Account has the correct Nintendo Switch Online tier.
  2. Open the Nintendo eShop on the Switch console and find the relevant Nintendo Classics application.
  3. Download the application at no additional per-game purchase price through the service.
  4. Launch it while signed in to the eligible account and choose a title from the available catalog.
  5. For travel, start the application while online so the console can complete its membership check; remember that Nintendo requires verification at least every seven days.

The exact application names and catalog contents can change, so use the current eShop listing for your region. The procedure does not revive a Wii Shop purchase or migrate its save data.

Which option is better for a particular player?

Choose the Wii route only for access to an existing Wii library

If you already own a Wii with previously downloaded Virtual Console games, that console is the relevant environment for those purchases. Check the latest Nintendo support information before relying on a redownload, because the closure notice did not give a permanent end date for redownloads and Wii-to-Wii U transfers.

Buying a Wii today solely to make new Virtual Console purchases is not a practical plan: Nintendo ended new Wii Shop software purchases on January 30, 2019, and Wii Points could no longer be added or redeemed after March 26, 2018.

Choose standard Switch Online for Nintendo, Super NES and Game Boy access

The base membership is the relevant tier if those three libraries meet your needs. It avoids hunting for individual old downloads, but the games remain available only while the membership is active.

Choose Expansion Pack for later systems

Expansion Pack is required for Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy libraries. On Switch 2, it also covers the GameCube classics identified by Nintendo. Confirm that your console supports the system you want; GameCube software, in particular, is not a feature of the original Switch hardware.

Choose a separate release when permanent access is the priority

Nintendo’s FAQ points to eShop releases and packaged collections as alternatives to the subscription libraries. A separate release can have its own licensing and support terms, so check the product listing rather than assuming that every classic game has a buy-once option.

Common misconceptions and the correct answer

Misconception Correct explanation
“Nintendo Switch Online is Virtual Console under a new name.” Nintendo says there are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner. It presents Nintendo Classics, eShop releases and packaged collections as separate routes.
“I bought the Wii version, so I own the Switch version.” Wii and Wii U eShop purchases do not carry over to Switch.
“Downloading the classic app means I own the games.” The app provides membership-based access; Nintendo requires an active plan.
“Offline mode means I can play after canceling.” Offline play works for members, but the console must verify membership online every seven days. An expired membership ends access.
“Every Switch can run every classic library.” GameCube classics require Switch 2, and Nintendo lists additional region and hardware restrictions for Virtual Boy.
“A Wii-to-Wii U transfer proves Switch transfer is supported.” The Wii-to-Wii U process was a separate transfer path. Nintendo says Wii and Wii U purchases do not carry over to Switch.

Controllers and the retro-play experience

Nintendo says members in the United States and Canada can receive special offers, including the opportunity to purchase classic-style controllers. A controller is optional: it is not included automatically with membership and is not required to launch the library applications. Availability, compatibility and stock can change, so check Nintendo’s current offer for your country and console before buying an accessory.

The controller offer does not alter the licensing model. A classic-style controller can make games feel closer to their original hardware, but it does not make Wii purchases playable on Switch or make a Switch Online game a permanent purchase.

A decision checklist before you subscribe or retire a Wii

  • Identify the game first. Confirm whether it is in the current Switch Online catalog, a separate eShop release, a packaged collection or none of those.
  • Check the system tier. NES, Super NES and Game Boy are in standard membership; Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy require Expansion Pack; GameCube requires Expansion Pack on Switch 2.
  • Check region and hardware. Virtual Boy is listed for the United States and Canada and is not available on Switch Lite; GameCube classics are Switch 2-only.
  • Decide how you value access. A subscription offers a broad catalog for one recurring membership, while a separate release may be preferable when a buy-once license is available.
  • Protect existing Wii data. If an old Wii contains purchased games or saves, do not erase or reset it until you have confirmed the current redownload and transfer status.
  • Plan for offline use. Keep the membership active and connect the console at least once every seven days for Nintendo’s verification requirement.

Bottom line for Wii owners and Switch buyers

Wii Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch Online are not two versions of the same store. Virtual Console was a now-closed Wii storefront built around purchasing individual downloads with Wii Points. Switch Online is an ongoing membership that unlocks curated classic-game applications for as long as the plan is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical consequences are decisive: new Wii purchases ended years ago; old Wii and Wii U purchases do not transfer to Switch; Switch Online access ends when membership ends, even though save data remains; and Nintendo currently does not describe the service as a renamed Virtual Console. Choose the Switch membership tier by system and region, and treat any old Wii purchase as a separate legacy entitlement rather than a transferable Switch license.
