The original includes five sports—tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and boxing. Resort adds 12 leisure sports on Wuhu Island and requires Wii MotionPlus functionality. To play both lineups, you need both discs. For Resort, use either an original Wii Remote with the Wii MotionPlus attachment or a Wii Remote Plus; some activities and multiplayer modes also require a Nunchuk and additional equipped controllers.
Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort are different games
The titles are not two editions of one disc, and Resort is not an expansion that unlocks the original sports. They are separate Wii releases with different sports lineups. If your goal is the familiar five-sport collection, buy Wii Sports. If you want the Wuhu Island activities and their more precise motion controls, buy Wii Sports Resort. To have every lineup described by Nintendo, you need both game discs.

Nintendo lists the UK release of Wii Sports Resort as 24 July 2009. It is a Wii title, so a used disc should match the regional edition supported by your console. The date and regional listing are historical product information; they do not indicate current stock or pricing. See Nintendo’s product information for the title at Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort page.
What sports are in each game?
| Game | Lineup | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Wii Sports | Five sports: tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and boxing | The original, familiar Wii Sports collection |
| Wii Sports Resort | 12 leisure sports on Wuhu Island; Nintendo names swordplay, power cruising, wakeboarding and disc dog among its examples | A separate lineup built around Wii MotionPlus precision controls |
Nintendo’s developer material identifies the original game’s five sports and describes Resort as having 12 leisure sports. The examples in the Resort description are not a replacement list for all 12 activities; they are the activities explicitly named on the cited Nintendo pages. Read the Nintendo developer interview and the Resort product page for Nintendo’s descriptions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction is therefore about more than a subtitle. The original game’s appeal is its compact set of five recognizable sports, while Resort is a broader leisure-sports package designed around finer movement sensing. Buying one does not silently add the activities from the other, so choose by the lineup you actually expect to play rather than by the newer-sounding name.
Which game should you buy?
Choose Wii Sports for the original five
Buy Wii Sports when the deciding factor is tennis, golf, bowling, baseball or boxing. The official material reviewed for this guide does not establish an extra MotionPlus requirement for the original game. Do not assume that Resort’s controller requirement automatically applies to Wii Sports; check the manual and the compatibility of your particular console and controllers if you are assembling a setup from used hardware. Nintendo’s support index provides manuals for the games and Wii accessories at Nintendo Wii Manuals.
Choose Wii Sports Resort for Wuhu Island activities
Choose Wii Sports Resort when you want its separate 12-activity collection, including the swordplay, power cruising, wakeboarding and disc dog examples Nintendo highlights. Resort is the game that needs MotionPlus functionality, so controller compatibility is part of the purchase decision rather than an optional upgrade.

Buy both for both collections
There is no single disc in these sources that combines the five original sports with Resort’s 12 activities. A household wanting both sets should plan for two games and the Resort-compatible controllers described below.
Wii Sports Resort controller requirements
Use one of two MotionPlus configurations
Every Resort session should use Wii MotionPlus functionality. You can provide it in either of these ways:
- Original Wii Remote plus the Wii MotionPlus attachment: the accessory connects to the bottom of an original Wii Remote.
- Wii Remote Plus: MotionPlus functionality is integrated into the remote, so there is no separate attachment hanging from the controller.
Nintendo explains the attachment and integrated-controller options on its Resort product page and its Wii accessories page. An ordinary original Wii Remote without either form of MotionPlus functionality does not meet Resort’s stated control requirement.
When comparing listings, treat “MotionPlus-compatible” as a hardware question, not merely a seller’s description. A standard Wii Remote and a Wii Remote Plus can look similar in photographs, while an original remote may need the separate module attached before the game recognizes it. If the listing does not clearly identify the model or attachment, ask for a close-up and an inventory of what is included.
Do not assume a used Resort copy still includes MotionPlus
Nintendo’s 2009 announcement says each game came with one Wii MotionPlus accessory. That is a historical package detail, not a guarantee that a used listing contains the attachment today or that every regional package had identical contents. Before buying a pre-owned copy, ask the seller to identify the included accessory or inspect clear photographs. The announcement is available at Nintendo’s 2009 Wii MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort announcement.
The included-one detail also matters for families. One accessory can make a package usable for a solo player, but it does not automatically equip a whole multiplayer group. Calculate the number of complete remote-and-MotionPlus sets you need before treating a boxed copy as a complete purchase.

When do you need a Nunchuk?
A Nunchuk is not a universal requirement for every Resort activity. Nintendo’s manual specifies the equipment by activity and mode. Some activities require a Nunchuk, and some multiplayer modes call for a Wii Remote, Nunchuk and MotionPlus functionality for each player. Therefore, buy or connect Nunchuks according to the sport and mode you intend to play rather than assuming that every person needs one.
Check the activity-specific diagrams and instructions in the Wii Sports Resort manual and the Resort controls manual. Those manuals are the authority for the exact controller combination for the mode selected on your disc.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis activity-by-activity approach prevents two common errors: arriving without a required Nunchuk, or buying several Nunchuks that your preferred activities never use. If different people plan to switch between activities, check each activity’s diagram and keep the required accessories accessible before starting.
How many controllers are needed for multiplayer?
Solo play
For one player, start with one compatible Wii Remote: either an original remote fitted with MotionPlus or a Wii Remote Plus. Add a Nunchuk only if the selected activity’s instructions call for it. Resort’s first start includes a MotionPlus test and setup procedure, so follow the on-screen and manual instructions before beginning an activity.
Two or more players
Additional players need additional compatible Wii Remotes, and Resort play requires MotionPlus functionality for the remotes being used. If a chosen mode specifies a Nunchuk, each player in that mode needs the relevant Nunchuk as well. You cannot treat one attachment as a shared requirement for simultaneous players when the manual calls for equipment per player.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the game’s creator, recommended obtaining another MotionPlus accessory and an additional Wii Remote for competitive multiplayer. His recommendation was made in Nintendo’s interview because the original package included one accessory; the activity instructions still determine the exact equipment for a particular mode. Read the interview at Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort interview.

A practical multiplayer checklist
- Count the people who will play at the same time.
- Provide one Wii Remote per player.
- Confirm that every remote is either a Wii Remote Plus or an original Wii Remote with a Wii MotionPlus attachment.
- Open the selected activity’s manual instructions and identify whether that mode uses a Nunchuk.
- If it does, provide the specified Nunchuk for each player covered by the mode’s instructions.
- Run Resort’s MotionPlus test and complete its setup before starting the competition.
For a rotating group, you may not need every remote active at once, but you still need enough equipped sets for the number of simultaneous players in the selected mode. Swapping a single attachment between players is only practical between rounds, not when the instructions require all players to be equipped at the same time.
What to check when buying used games and accessories
Verify the disc and region
Confirm that the listing is for the exact title—Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort—rather than a similarly named bundle or a case without its disc. Resort’s UK product page dates the game to 24 July 2009; regional editions can differ, so match the disc region to the console you plan to use.
Verify the Resort controller hardware
- For an original Wii Remote, ask whether the Wii MotionPlus attachment is included and functional.
- For a Wii Remote Plus, confirm that the listing is the integrated MotionPlus model rather than an ordinary Wii Remote.
- If the seller advertises a bundle, check whether “one MotionPlus included” refers to the original retail package or to what is actually present in this used copy.
- For multiplayer, count complete controller sets, not just the number of game discs.
Check the accessories needed by your chosen activity
Do not purchase a collection of Nunchuks solely because Resort can use them. First identify the activities and modes you expect to play, then use the manuals to map each one to its required controller. This avoids both an incomplete setup and unnecessary accessories.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

There is no reliable universal price for a used disc or accessory: condition, region, package contents and seller listing all affect the total. Compare the complete cost of the game plus the number of MotionPlus-equipped remotes and any Nunchuks required for your player count, rather than comparing disc prices alone.
Setting up Wii Sports Resort correctly
- Connect the Wii console and insert the Wii Sports Resort disc.
- Pair or synchronize the Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus with the console using the console’s normal Wii controller procedure.
- If you are using an original Wii Remote, attach the Wii MotionPlus unit securely before launching Resort.
- Start the game and complete the MotionPlus test and calibration instructions shown at first launch.
- Select an activity and read its controller diagram before inviting additional players.
- Connect a Nunchuk only when the selected activity or mode specifies one.
- For multiplayer, repeat the controller and MotionPlus checks for every player’s remote, then follow the mode’s per-player equipment instructions.
The manual’s first-start test matters because Resort is designed around MotionPlus sensing. If a remote is not recognized as MotionPlus-capable, stop at this stage and correct the hardware instead of trying to play with an ordinary remote.
Run the setup with the final controller configuration whenever possible. Adding an attachment after calibration, changing remotes, or moving to a different activity can require you to repeat the relevant test. Keep the sensor area clear and follow the game’s prompts rather than treating the initial test as optional.
Common buying and setup mistakes
Buying only Resort and expecting the original sports
Resort does not supply the original game’s tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and boxing lineup. Those sports belong to the separate Wii Sports disc, so buy that title as well if they are important to you.
Buying the original game and a MotionPlus attachment unnecessarily
The sources reviewed here do not establish an extra MotionPlus requirement for Wii Sports. MotionPlus is the documented requirement for Resort. Keep the two games’ controller requirements separate and verify the relevant manual for a particular setup.

The one-accessory package statement describes Nintendo’s original 2009 retail package. A used copy may have been separated from its attachment, and the package contents of a regional edition should be confirmed. Ask for an inventory rather than relying on the box art or listing title.
Providing one controller for a multiplayer group
Some Resort modes require the relevant Wii Remote, MotionPlus functionality and Nunchuk for each player. A single equipped remote cannot satisfy a per-player requirement. Count complete sets before the session starts.
Giving every activity the same controller setup
Resort’s accessory needs vary by activity and mode. A Nunchuk required by one activity is not evidence that all activities require it. Use the manual’s activity-specific instructions.
Confusing a remote with a complete Resort controller set
A listing that says “two Wii Remotes” may still leave you short of MotionPlus functionality if the remotes are ordinary models without attachments. For Resort, count either Wii Remote Plus units or original remotes paired with working MotionPlus modules. Then check whether the chosen mode adds a Nunchuk requirement.

A decision guide by reader goal
| Your goal | Game(s) | Controller planning |
|---|---|---|
| Play tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and boxing | Wii Sports | The reviewed sources do not establish an additional MotionPlus requirement for this title; verify your console and controller combination in the manual. |
| Play Resort’s Wuhu Island activities | Wii Sports Resort | MotionPlus functionality is required: original Wii Remote plus attachment, or Wii Remote Plus. |
| Play both lineups | Both discs | Plan the Resort-compatible controller setup in addition to the original game’s disc. |
| Compete with several players in Resort | Wii Sports Resort | Use one compatible remote per player; add Nunchuks wherever the selected activity or mode requires them. |
If you are buying for a single player who wants only the original sports, the simplest setup is the Wii Sports disc and a compatible Wii controller. If that player also wants Resort, add the second disc and one MotionPlus-capable remote. For a family or party setup, decide the maximum simultaneous player count first; that number determines how many equipped remotes you must test, while the activity determines whether Nunchuks are added.

Does Wii Sports Resort come with MotionPlus?
Nintendo’s 2009 announcement says the original game package included one Wii MotionPlus accessory. For a used copy, verify the actual contents because the attachment may no longer be with the disc. A Wii Remote Plus is an alternative because MotionPlus functionality is built in.
Can I use a Wii Remote Plus instead of the attachment?
Yes. Nintendo identifies Wii Remote Plus as the integrated MotionPlus option for Resort, while an original Wii Remote can use the separate attachment.
Do I need a Nunchuk for every Resort sport?
No. The requirement depends on the activity and mode. Consult the controller diagrams in the Resort manual before buying or connecting Nunchuks.
Is one MotionPlus accessory enough for two-player Resort?
Not when the selected multiplayer mode requires MotionPlus functionality for each player’s remote. Provide a compatible equipped remote for every simultaneous player, then check whether that mode also requires a Nunchuk per player.
Can one disc provide both games’ sports?
No. The five original sports and Resort’s 12 activities are on separate Wii titles. Playing both collections requires both discs.
What should I verify in a second-hand listing?
Confirm the exact disc, its regional edition, the condition of the disc, and whether the listing includes a working MotionPlus attachment or Wii Remote Plus. For group play, count the number of complete compatible controller sets and check Nunchuk requirements for the activities you intend to use.
Does Resort work with an ordinary Wii Remote?
Resort requires MotionPlus functionality. An ordinary original Wii Remote needs the separate Wii MotionPlus attachment; without that attachment, it does not meet the stated Resort control requirement. A Wii Remote Plus meets it through integrated hardware.
Should every player have a Nunchuk?
Only when the selected activity or multiplayer mode specifies one. The manual’s diagrams determine whether the Nunchuk applies to one player’s setup or to each player in that mode.

No. It is Nintendo’s listed UK release date for the Wii title. It does not guarantee current stock, a particular used-disc condition, pricing or package contents.
Bottom line
Wii Sports is the five-sport original; Wii Sports Resort is a separate 12-activity game that requires MotionPlus functionality. Buy the original disc for tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and boxing, Resort plus a Wii Remote Plus or MotionPlus-equipped Wii Remote for the Wuhu Island activities, and both discs if you want both collections.
