Press + to open the pause menu, choose Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory, and press A. If that does not fix the problem, check the accessory connection, batteries, game compatibility, wireless interference, and whether the fault follows the Wii Remote or the MotionPlus accessory.
Start with the symptom
Different failures point to different parts of the setup. Motion drift, delayed response, and an on-screen instruction to recalibrate usually concern MotionPlus orientation or calibration. A remote that will not power on, sync, or point at the screen has a separate controller or synchronization problem that calibration alone cannot solve.

| What you see | Most useful first check | What the check isolates |
|---|---|---|
| The sport responds at the wrong angle or slowly drifts | Run the in-game calibration, then the flat-surface recalibration procedure | Calibration and controller orientation |
| Motion becomes erratic after changing batteries | Recalibrate after the battery change | A calibration state lost during play |
| Motion becomes erratic after unplugging the accessory | Reconnect it fully and recalibrate | Connector seating and calibration |
| The remote does not respond or synchronize | Install fresh batteries and troubleshoot synchronization | The Wii Remote itself, rather than only MotionPlus |
| The problem remains with one accessory but not another remote | Cross-test the accessory | A failing MotionPlus accessory |
| The problem remains with one remote but not another accessory | Cross-test the remote | A failing Wii Remote |
Use one symptom at a time when testing. For example, first establish whether buttons and the pointer work, then evaluate motion in the same sport. Changing batteries, moving the console, switching remotes, and changing the room all at once can make a temporary calibration change look like a hardware repair.

Recalibrate Wii MotionPlus in Wii Sports Resort
Use the calibration command in the pause menu
Wii Sports Resort performs MotionPlus calibration after you choose a sport and the number of players. If the controls are still inaccurate during a game, you can start calibration without leaving the activity:

- Press the + button on the Wii Remote to open the pause menu.
- Point to Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory.
- Press A and follow the on-screen instruction.
Keep the controller still while the game measures it. Do not swing, rotate, or press buttons during the measurement unless the game specifically asks you to do so. Resume play only after the calibration prompt has completed. If several players are using remotes, calibrate the remote that is showing the problem rather than assuming that one player’s successful calibration corrected every controller.
Run the command again whenever the reference position changes. A remote set down at a different angle, an accessory disconnected during a session, or batteries changed while playing can all leave the game using an old calibration state. Recalibrating is faster and safer than trying to compensate for drift by changing your swing.
Run Nintendo’s flat-surface procedure
Nintendo’s separate recalibration procedure applies to both a Wii Remote Plus and an original Wii Remote with the external MotionPlus accessory attached:
- Start a game that supports MotionPlus.
- Place the controller on a flat, horizontal surface such as a table.
- Set it down with the buttons facing down.
- Leave it undisturbed for 10 seconds.
- Pick it up and check the response in the game.
The 10-second interval is an operating instruction, not a measurement of failure rates or accuracy. The controller must remain still and correctly oriented; holding it in your hand during this step defeats the purpose of the calibration. Use a level, stable surface rather than a cushion or your lap, and do not lift the remote early to see whether the prompt has changed.
If the result is still wrong, repeat the procedure once after checking the connector and batteries. Repeating calibration with the same unstable setup will not solve a loose plug, depleted power, or radio interference, so move to those checks instead of performing the still-controller step indefinitely.
Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort manual describes the in-game calibration option and the sport-selection flow. You can consult the manual here: Wii Sports Resort instruction manual.
Check compatibility, connector seating, and power
Confirm that the game supports MotionPlus
The accessory only provides its enhanced motion sensing in software designed to use it. If another title does not support MotionPlus, an apparent lack of improved response is not evidence that the hardware is broken. Use Wii Sports Resort or another explicitly MotionPlus-compatible game for testing. A test in an unsupported title cannot distinguish a failed accessory from a game that simply does not read MotionPlus data.

Do the first comparison in the same supported sport and, when possible, from the same player position. This keeps the game, television, and controller orientation constant while you work through the hardware checks.
Reseat the expansion connector
Turn the remote off, remove the MotionPlus connector, and insert it again firmly into the expansion port. A partially inserted plug can allow buttons to work while motion data is unreliable or unavailable. Nintendo also recommends removing and reinserting the connector several times when necessary, then testing again.
Do not force the plug at an angle. Inspect the port and connector for obvious dirt or damage, and keep the accessory aligned with the remote’s expansion socket. After reconnecting during gameplay, run calibration again; disconnecting and reconnecting can invalidate the previous calibration state.

Test the connector by gently holding the remote normally, not by twisting the plug or applying pressure to it. If motion cuts in and out when the accessory is handled, stop stressing the connector and use the cross-test later in this guide to determine whether the fault follows the accessory or the remote.
Check battery level before deeper diagnosis
Weak batteries can make a remote appear unreliable. Install a fresh, matched pair of batteries and confirm the battery indicator from the Wii HOME menu. If you changed batteries while playing, recalibrate before judging the result, because Nintendo lists a battery change during play as a situation that can require recalibration.
Fresh batteries will not repair a damaged connector or a remote that cannot synchronize, but they remove the simplest power-related cause. Keep the battery contacts dry and correctly oriented, and close the battery cover before testing motion. If the remote powers on but immediately loses connection, treat that as a synchronization or power symptom as well as a possible MotionPlus symptom.
Fix drift and erratic movement
Allow for temperature changes
Nintendo identifies sudden temperature changes as a calibration factor. If the console, remote, or accessory has moved from a cold room, vehicle, or storage area into a warm room, let the equipment reach room temperature before calibrating. Place the remote buttons-down on the flat surface and repeat the 10-second procedure after the temperature has stabilized.
Do not compare a cold-start test with a later warm-room test as if they were identical conditions. First allow the equipment to settle, then perform the in-game calibration and evaluate several controlled movements. This separates a changing reference from a persistent fault.
Reduce radio-frequency interference
Nearby wireless equipment can contribute to erratic operation. Temporarily move or switch off devices near the play area, including cordless phones, wireless keyboards, and wireless mice. Then recalibrate and test the same sport from the same position. If the motion becomes stable, restore devices one at a time to identify the source.
Do not change several variables at once. Testing with the same television, console position, remote, and game makes it easier to tell whether interference was responsible rather than simply coinciding with another change. A stable result after removing one device is useful evidence; a single improvement after moving the entire setup is not enough to identify which device mattered.
Use controlled movements
Nintendo advises avoiding overly fast or exaggerated movements. MotionPlus tracks the controller’s orientation; violently snapping the remote can produce an unintended angle, make a normal swing difficult to reproduce, or cause you to cross the game’s intended movement range. Recalibrate, hold the remote naturally, and make deliberate movements appropriate to the sport.
For a sport that requires a steady aim or angle, pause and recalibrate rather than trying to compensate by moving harder. A larger swing does not correct a bad reference position. Compare a few repeatable, moderate movements before deciding that the game is ignoring input.
Separate a remote problem from an accessory problem
Cross-test the MotionPlus accessory

- Attach the suspect MotionPlus accessory to another compatible Wii Remote and test it in Wii Sports Resort.
- Attach a different MotionPlus accessory to the original remote and test the same activity.
- Run the in-game calibration for each combination before comparing behavior.
If the fault follows the accessory to the second remote, the accessory is the likely source. If the fault stays with the original remote while a different accessory works normally, the remote or its expansion port is more likely at fault. If both combinations behave badly, revisit batteries, interference, temperature, and the calibration procedure before concluding that more than one component has failed.
Keep the test fair: use the same supported sport, the same number of players, and the same movement. A different remote may have a different starting angle, so calibrate it before judging its response. Record which physical part was used in each combination; otherwise it is easy to confuse “remote one with accessory two” and “remote two with accessory one.”
Keep synchronization failures separate
A controller that does not connect to the Wii, does not respond to buttons, or cannot point at the screen needs Wii Remote troubleshooting as well as MotionPlus troubleshooting. Install fresh batteries, clear and restore the remote’s synchronization, and test another licensed remote if one is available. Calibration cannot make an unsynchronized controller communicate with the console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNintendo identifies the licensed original Wii Remote as model RVL-003. A licensed Wii Remote Plus is model RVL-036. The model number is printed near the remote’s expansion connector and helps you identify which hardware you are testing.
If buttons work but the pointer does not, do not automatically blame MotionPlus: basic remote response and synchronization remain separate checks. Conversely, a pointer that works does not prove that the expansion accessory is seated correctly, because motion data can fail while ordinary buttons still register.
Check whether MotionPlus is already built in
Wii Remote Plus does not need the separate attachment
A Wii Remote Plus incorporates MotionPlus technology inside the controller. It works with MotionPlus games without the external accessory. Nintendo’s manual says that the controller “incorporates the technology of the Wii MotionPlus™ accessory, allowing more precise and detailed control of gameplay.”
Attaching a separate MotionPlus accessory to a Wii Remote Plus is unnecessary and adds no feature. If your controller is model RVL-036, remove the external attachment before testing; otherwise you are introducing an extra connector and another possible point of failure.

Distinguish the two hardware layouts
| Hardware | MotionPlus location | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Wii Remote, RVL-003 | External MotionPlus accessory connected to the expansion port | Accessory seating, connector condition, and a second accessory or remote |
| Wii Remote Plus, RVL-036 | Built into the remote | Batteries, calibration, interference, synchronization, and a second remote |
This distinction changes the likely failure point. With an RVL-003, there are two physical devices and an expansion connection to isolate. With an RVL-036, there is no removable MotionPlus module to reseat, so focus on calibration, power, environment, synchronization, and comparison with another complete remote.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Follow this order so each test answers a specific question and you do not replace hardware prematurely:
- Use a supported game. Open Wii Sports Resort and select the sport and number of players so its normal calibration can run.
- Calibrate in the pause menu. Press +, choose Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory, and press A.
- Perform the still-controller procedure. Place the remote buttons-down on a level horizontal surface for 10 seconds, then test again.
- Check power. Install fresh batteries and verify the battery level from the HOME menu.
- Check the connection. For an original Wii Remote, remove and firmly reconnect the MotionPlus accessory. Recalibrate after reconnecting.
- Stabilize the environment. Let cold equipment warm to room temperature, move nearby wireless devices away, and avoid exaggerated swings.
- Test synchronization. If buttons, pointing, or connection are also failing, clear and restore synchronization and try another licensed remote.
- Cross-test hardware. Try the accessory on another remote and another accessory on the original remote, recalibrating each setup.
- Decide what needs service. Replace or seek support for the component that consistently carries the fault after the preceding tests; do not treat replacement as the first step.
After each step, repeat the same short test rather than jumping to a different sport. The aim is to learn whether one change altered the symptom. If calibration fixes the problem temporarily and drift returns only after a battery change or reconnection, that pattern points to a recurring calibration trigger rather than immediate proof of a dead sensor.

What not to conclude too quickly
- “The game is broken because one swing was wrong.” A single missed movement can result from calibration, an exaggerated gesture, or a changing reference position.
- “New batteries fixed everything.” Battery replacement can require a new calibration, so test only after recalibrating.
- “The accessory failed because the remote still turns on.” Power and buttons can work even when an expansion connector is not fully seated.
- “A Wii Remote Plus needs the add-on.” Its MotionPlus hardware is already built in; the external accessory is redundant.
- “Every remote fault is MotionPlus.” Synchronization and pointer failures require separate Wii Remote checks.
- “One successful test proves the hardware is healthy.” A controller can behave normally in one setup and fail when the accessory, temperature, or wireless environment changes. Repeat the comparison after a proper calibration.
When to stop troubleshooting
After fresh batteries, correct calibration, a secure connection, a stable temperature, reduced wireless interference, and cross-testing with another licensed remote or MotionPlus accessory, a fault that consistently follows one component is strong evidence that the component needs replacement or Nintendo support. Keep the failing part identified by its behavior: accessory-following faults implicate the external MotionPlus unit, while remote-following faults implicate the Wii Remote or its built-in MotionPlus hardware.
Current marketplace inventory, prices, seller quality, and repair availability vary and are not established by Nintendo’s manuals. If you shop for a replacement, match the hardware layout: an original RVL-003 remote requires a compatible external MotionPlus accessory, while an RVL-036 Wii Remote Plus already contains MotionPlus. Do not buy a separate attachment for an RVL-036 simply because a listing uses the words “MotionPlus”; verify whether the controller already includes the technology.
Official guidance in brief
Nintendo’s key instruction is to place a Wii Remote Plus “on a flat horizontal surface (such as a table) with the buttons facing down” during recalibration. The same still-controller approach is applicable when an original Wii Remote has the MotionPlus accessory attached. The Wii Sports Resort manual also provides the in-game calibration command, allowing you to correct the controller without leaving the current sport.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Wii Sports Resort keep telling me to recalibrate?
Start with the in-game calibration command, then repeat the buttons-down, flat-surface procedure for 10 seconds. Recalibration may be needed after changing batteries during play or disconnecting and reconnecting MotionPlus. If the message returns, check temperature, nearby wireless devices, movement style, and connector seating before assuming the accessory has failed.
Can I recalibrate without exiting my sport?
Yes. Press + to open the pause menu, select Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory, and press A. Follow the on-screen instruction and keep the controller still until the measurement finishes.

No. A Wii Remote Plus has MotionPlus built in. The separate attachment is unnecessary and adds no feature. The original Wii Remote model is RVL-003; Wii Remote Plus is RVL-036.
What if the remote buttons work but motion does not?
Reseat the external accessory if you are using an RVL-003, install fresh batteries, and recalibrate. Buttons can continue to work when an expansion connector is only partly inserted, so button response alone does not clear the accessory or port.
How can I tell whether the remote or MotionPlus accessory is bad?
Use both cross-tests: the suspect accessory on another compatible remote, and a different accessory on the original remote. Calibrate each combination in the same supported sport. A fault that follows the accessory implicates that unit; a fault that remains with one remote implicates the remote or its port.
Can wireless devices really affect MotionPlus?
Nintendo identifies radio-frequency interference as a possible cause of erratic operation. Move or switch off nearby cordless phones, wireless keyboards, and wireless mice, recalibrate, and test again. Restore devices one at a time if the controls become stable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Wii Sports Resort keep telling me to recalibrate?
Run the pause-menu calibration, then place the controller buttons-down on a flat surface for 10 seconds. Recalibrate after battery changes or reconnecting MotionPlus, and check temperature, interference, movement style, and connector seating.
Can I recalibrate without exiting my sport?
Yes. Press +, choose Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory, press A, and keep the controller still while the prompt completes.
Does a Wii Remote Plus need an external MotionPlus accessory?
No. Wii Remote Plus (RVL-036) has MotionPlus built in; the separate attachment is unnecessary.
How do I isolate a bad accessory from a bad remote?
Test the suspect accessory on another compatible remote and a different accessory on the original remote, calibrating each setup. The component that carries the fault is the likely source.
What should I do if buttons work but motion does not?
Check batteries, reseat the external accessory on an RVL-003 remote, and recalibrate. Button response does not prove the expansion connector is fully seated.
Can wireless devices interfere with MotionPlus?
Nintendo lists radio-frequency interference as a possible cause. Move or switch off nearby cordless phones, wireless keyboards, and wireless mice, then recalibrate and retest.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I replace MotionPlus right away?
No. Complete the calibration, power, connector, environmental, synchronization, and cross-test steps first. Replace or seek support only when the fault consistently follows one component.
The Bottom Line
Start in Wii Sports Resort: press +, select Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory, and press A. If needed, place the remote buttons-down on a flat surface for 10 seconds. Then check fresh batteries, connector seating, supported-game compatibility, temperature, wireless interference, and controlled movements. Finally, cross-test the remote and accessory. A fault that follows one component—not one temporary calibration state—is the clearest reason to seek replacement or Nintendo support.
