Short answer: A book-style foldable is usually better for reading across several columns or pages and for frequent multitasking because its inner display opens to roughly tablet size. A conventional wide-screen Android phone is usually easier to carry, hold and use as a single-screen phone. Video is not an automatic win for foldables: aspect ratio, cropping, speakers and measured picture quality matter more than diagonal size alone.
There is no universal category winner. Your best choice depends on whether your day is dominated by one-app reading, split-screen work, or watching particular video formats.

Quick verdict by workload
| Primary task | Better fit | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading books, documents and web pages | Book-style foldable for maximum workspace; either type for one-app reading | The opened inner display gives more room for page layout, two-page views and larger text without as much scrolling. | The outer cover screen remains useful for quick reading, and comfort depends on weight, hinge feel and how you hold the device. |
| Video | Whichever device best matches your content and has better sound and picture performance | A larger panel can make video more immersive, but aspect ratio determines how much of a stream is filled, cropped or letterboxed. | A 2025 review found judder on demanding content and less capable sound on Galaxy Z Fold7, so do not buy a foldable for size alone. |
| Multitasking | Book-style foldable | The inner screen supports adjustable split screen, drag-and-drop and, in one comparison, three simultaneous apps on Galaxy Z Fold7 versus two on Pixel 10 Pro Fold. | App support and controls vary by model and software version. |
| Simple daily handling | Conventional wide-screen phone | One rigid slab has no hinge to open and no second screen layout to learn. | Not every conventional phone is lighter than every foldable; compare the exact models. |
What the two designs actually give you
Conventional wide-screen Android phones
A conventional phone has one fixed display. “Wide-screen” in this comparison means a slab-style Android handset with a relatively large, broad panel, such as the Galaxy S25 Ultra used as a category example in the available material. Its screen does not expand, so all reading, video and app combinations happen within the same rectangle.
Recommended Free Tools
That fixed format is also its practical advantage. You pick it up, unlock it and use one surface. There is no decision about whether to open the phone, which display should receive an app, or whether a hinge angle is comfortable on a desk. A slab can still be excellent for reading and video when its display, speakers and software suit your needs, but the available evidence does not establish a specific conventional model as superior to both named foldables for all three tasks.

Book-style foldables
A book-style foldable has a normal cover display on the outside and a larger flexible display inside. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 with a 6.5-inch, 21:9 cover screen and an 8-inch main screen. Google lists the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with a 6.4-inch exterior display and an 8-inch inner display. These are 2025 product specifications; check the exact regional configuration and current model before buying.
The outer panel works like a regular phone for calls, messages, navigation and short reading sessions. Opening the hinge exposes the main reason to choose this form factor: more usable screen area for a page, two apps or a video viewed at a larger size. The extra capability comes with more hardware, a hinge and greater folded thickness, so it is a trade rather than a free upgrade.
Reading: where the inner display has its clearest advantage
More page area and less scrolling
On an opened foldable, an e-book can show more lines at a readable font size, and a web page or document can retain more of its layout. Independent review coverage considered the larger inner display useful for e-book reading and browsing. That does not mean every page becomes easier: badly responsive websites may leave wide empty margins, while some apps may not be optimized for the unusual aspect ratio.

In a book app, the inner panel can make a two-page spread feel closer to a small reader or tablet. You still need to test the app because page-turn controls, margins and scaling are controlled by the software, not just the panel size.
When the cover screen is enough
Short articles, messages, recipes and quick searches often feel natural on the cover display. The Fold7’s 21:9 outer screen is tall and narrow, while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s 6.4-inch exterior display is described by an independent reviewer as slightly wider in use. A wider cover screen can make typing and ordinary phone apps feel less constrained, but the perceived difference comes from shape and corners as well as diagonal measurement.

For a long reading session, the opened screen reduces the need to scroll, but it also changes how you hold the device. Two-handed use is more stable for a large page; one-handed use may favor the cover screen or a conventional phone. Weight and thickness matter more after several chapters than they do during a short demonstration.
Reading decision checklist
- Choose the inner display if you read long documents, comics, PDFs or two-page layouts most days.
- Choose either format if your reading is mostly short articles and messages; compare text rendering, brightness and the comfort of the exact handset.
- Check whether your preferred book, news and note apps support the unfolded aspect ratio and split-screen resizing.
- Try the device with your normal font size. A larger panel is useful only if text remains comfortable and the device is not tiring to hold.
Video: screen size helps, but format and performance decide the result
Aspect ratio determines the visible picture
Streaming video arrives in many shapes: widescreen films, television episodes, vertical clips and older material. A foldable’s tall cover screen may show substantial bars around a widescreen film. The opened inner panel is larger, but its shape can still leave bars or require cropping. A conventional wide-screen phone may use its area more efficiently for some content even when its diagonal measurement is smaller.

Compare a movie, a live stream, a vertical clip and a downloaded file rather than relying on a single promotional demo. Picture and sound are separate from physical size
A larger panel does not automatically have better motion handling, color, peak brightness or speakers. What Hi-Fi’s Galaxy Z Fold7 review advised against buying that model purely for somewhat larger video and reported judder on demanding content plus less capable sound. Those are that publication’s review findings under its test conditions, not universal results for every foldable, app or stream.
Tom’s Guide measured peak brightness of 2,566 nits for Pixel 10 Pro Fold and 2,245 nits for Galaxy Z Fold7 in its comparison. It also reported that Samsung displayed more of the tested color spectrum and more accurate color in the modes it evaluated. These are publication-specific measurements, not guarantees for every unit or viewing mode. Brightness can be especially important outdoors, while accurate color matters more for films, photography and creative work.

Listen to both devices at the volume you normally use. Speaker placement, stereo balance and whether your hand blocks an outlet can change the experience. If you use headphones or a Bluetooth speaker, the handset’s built-in sound matters less than screen behavior and battery endurance.
Streaming-specific software
Google documents streaming optimization for Netflix and Disney+ on Pixel 10 Pro Fold. That is a model-specific software feature, so do not assume that another foldable or another service behaves identically. Check subtitle placement, playback controls and full-screen behavior in the services you pay for.
Video buying checklist
- Match the panel shape to your usual content, and inspect cropping and letterboxing rather than judging by inches.
- Compare brightness, color mode, motion handling and speaker quality on the exact models.
- Test both the cover and inner displays on a foldable; you may watch short clips without opening it.
- Consider a stand for hands-free viewing. Google describes Pixelsnap accessories and a ring stand for Pixel phones, but verify compatibility with the exact phone and accessory.
Multitasking: the strongest case for a foldable
Two apps with adjustable split screen
Google documents adjustable split screen and drag-and-drop on Pixel 10 Pro Fold. You can place two apps side by side, resize their portions and move content between supported apps. Typical examples include a browser beside notes, a calendar beside email, or a video beside a chat. The usefulness depends on whether each app allows resizing and whether Android preserves your arrangement after rotation or folding.
Three apps versus two in one comparison
Tom’s Guide reported that Galaxy Z Fold7 can run three apps on its main screen, compared with two on Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This is that publication’s comparison of those models, not a general Android rule. Three narrow panes can be useful for a reference, messages and a document, but they may make each app cramped. Two larger panes are often easier to read and tap.
Samsung positions the Fold7’s 8-inch opened display as providing more room for editing and multiple apps. The practical gain is not simply counting windows: it is seeing more context without repeatedly switching away from the task. A conventional phone can use picture-in-picture, app pairs or quick switching, but every app still shares one smaller surface.

Multitasking limits to check
- Some apps force a fixed portrait layout or refuse split screen.
- Drag-and-drop works only where the source and destination apps support it.
- Three-app layouts can reduce tap targets and increase visual clutter.
- Keyboard use, hinge angle and the position of the fold affect desk-based work.
- Software updates can change available layouts, so inspect the current version before purchase.
Portability and handling: the cost of the larger workspace
Foldables vary widely, so use model-specific figures rather than assuming all are heavy. Samsung lists Galaxy Z Fold7 at 215 grams and 8.9 millimeters thick when folded. Tech Advisor reports Pixel 10 Pro Fold at 258 grams and 10.8 millimeters folded. The 43-gram and 1.9-millimeter differences are noticeable in a pocket, but they compare two particular 2025 devices and do not describe every conventional phone.
| Model | Cover or exterior display | Inner or main display | Folded weight | Folded thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 | 6.5 inches, 21:9 | 8 inches | 215 g | 8.9 mm |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | 6.4 inches | 8 inches | 258 g, as reported by Tech Advisor | 10.8 mm, as reported by Tech Advisor |
Samsung’s cover screen is tall and narrow; the Pixel’s outer panel was described by Tech Advisor as feeling wider, while Samsung’s can feel larger because of its shape and corners. Handle both phones closed and open. Check whether you can reach the top of the cover screen, whether the hinge makes one-handed use awkward and whether the opened device fits your preferred bag or stand.
A conventional phone avoids the opening step and has a single rigid body. That simplicity can matter if you frequently use the device while walking, commuting or carrying other equipment. It does not prove that a slab is lighter than every foldable; compare the published weight, thickness and case you will actually carry.

Battery life is highly dependent on which display you use, network conditions, brightness and apps. Tom’s Guide’s cellular web-surfing test recorded 10 hours 44 minutes for Galaxy Z Fold7 and 12 hours 16 minutes for Pixel 10 Pro Fold. These are dated review results from one test method, not a promise of real-world endurance.

| Manufacturer battery statement | Not stated in the supplied model notes | “Up to 30+ hours” | Google’s claim, not an independent test result. |
Samsung advertises peak brightness of up to 2,600 nits for Galaxy Z Fold7. The small difference between that claim and a review measurement should not be treated as a contradiction: manufacturers and reviewers can use different modes, windows, conditions and measurement methods. Use independent testing for comparisons and manufacturer specifications for the advertised ceiling.
Best Value
- A premium foldable smartphone featuring an 8.0" Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, 6.5" cover display, 200MP main camera, Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, 4,400mAh battery, and a slim 215g design.
Durability and long-term ownership
Google says Pixel 10 Pro Fold has an IP68 rating and that its hinge is twice as durable as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s. Google also says the hinge can handle more than 10 years of folding. These are manufacturer statements, not independent durability tests. Treat them as design claims and confirm the warranty, repair options and water-damage exclusions in your region.
The presence of a hinge adds another component to keep clean and protect. A case may increase folded thickness and weight, while a conventional phone’s single body generally requires less handling discipline. Neither design removes the need for a screen protector, careful charging and prompt attention to damage.
How to choose without relying on a category stereotype
Pick the foldable when these situations describe you
- You regularly read long documents, books or web pages and value seeing more content at once.
- You write, research or communicate with two or more apps visible together.
- You can accept extra folded weight, thickness and a hinge in exchange for a larger opened workspace.
- You are willing to learn model-specific window controls and verify app compatibility.
Pick a conventional wide-screen phone when these situations describe you
- Most sessions use one app and you want the fastest, simplest interaction.
- You prefer a lighter-feeling, rigid device and do not need an inner display.
- Your video library fits the phone’s fixed aspect ratio and you prioritize speakers or picture quality over screen area.
- You would rather avoid foldable-specific case, hinge and repair considerations.
Use a hands-on test before buying
- Open the book or document you read most and set your normal font size.
- Play several familiar videos, including widescreen and vertical clips, on both the cover and inner screens where applicable.
- Arrange your real multitasking pair, then try a three-app layout if the model supports it.
- Type a message one-handed on the outer display and carry the closed phone in your usual pocket or bag.
- Check brightness outdoors, speaker balance at normal volume and the exact case or stand accessories you plan to use.
What the named 2025 examples show
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7
Samsung’s launch information specifies a 6.5-inch 21:9 cover display, an 8-inch main display, 215-gram weight and 8.9-millimeter folded thickness. The company presents the opened screen as useful for editing and multitasking and claims peak brightness of up to 2,600 nits. Samsung executive TM Roh described it as combining Galaxy AI with powerful hardware, but that launch statement is marketing language rather than independent evidence of superiority.

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold
Google lists a 6.4-inch exterior display and an 8-inch inner display and documents adjustable split screen, drag-and-drop and streaming optimization for Netflix and Disney+. Google claims “up to 30+ hours” of battery life, an IP68 rating and a hinge capable of more than 10 years of folding. Those figures and durability statements come from Google; the independent brightness and battery numbers above come from Tom’s Guide’s testing.
Conventional phones as a category
A large slab phone such as Galaxy S25 Ultra can be a sensible comparison point for people who value a single, broad screen, but the available evidence does not support declaring it the better reading, video or multitasking choice against both foldables. Compare the exact display, speakers, weight, software and battery results for the conventional model you are considering.
Bottom-line decision
Choose a book-style foldable if your priority is workspace: long-form reading with fewer page turns and frequent split-screen or multi-app work. Choose a conventional wide-screen Android phone if your priority is uncomplicated one-screen use and easy handling. For video, decide from the content you watch and the phone’s measured picture, motion and sound performance—not from the unfolded diagonal alone.
