Yes—but not because every field stops every fire. A 2026 analysis of nearly 10,000 wildfire perimeters found that cropland was associated with fire-stopping locations far more often than most other land types. As irrigated fields disappear, the West can lose both moist, low-fuel surfaces and the open ground firefighters use for access and staging.
The finding creates a difficult drought-policy tradeoff: retiring farmland can conserve water, yet the replacement landscape may burn more readily or be developed in ways that add ignition risk. The practical answer is not to preserve every field indefinitely, but to evaluate water savings and wildfire consequences together for each proposed land-use change.

What the 2026 study examined
A regional perimeter analysis
Published in Environmental Research Letters, the study led by Austen Lorenz and Beatrice Gordon examined wildfire perimeter data for nearly 10,000 fires from 1985 through 2024 across 11 Western states. It is described as the first regional assessment of cropland’s association with where Western fires stop.
The main numbers
| Finding | What it means |
|---|---|
| More than 4 million hectares of Western cropland lost since about 1985 | A large reduction in a land cover that often has high moisture and little continuous fine fuel during the growing season. |
| About 10.6 million acres (4.3 million hectares) converted in areas where cropland and wildfire perimeters converged | This is the portion identified in the fire-convergent analysis, not a separate estimate of all Western farmland loss. |
| Cropland 1.3 to 5 times more associated with fire-stopping locations than other land types | The strength varied by comparison and location. Only barren land was described as an equally effective barrier. |
| About 20% of converted cropland became developed communities | Development can introduce additional people, infrastructure and potential human ignitions into fire-prone areas. |
These are associations from landscape and perimeter data. They do not mean that a particular field will stop a crown fire, that every irrigated field is equally protective, or that cropland is the sole reason a fire ends at a given boundary.

Why irrigated fields can interrupt fire spread
Moisture changes the fuel
Irrigated crops generally contain more live moisture than adjacent dry grass, shrub or forest fuels during the period when irrigation is active. That can reduce the continuity of burnable material at the ground level and make flame spread less likely across a field than across unmanaged vegetation. The effect depends on crop type, harvest timing, soil moisture, wind and whether irrigation overlaps the local fire season.
Open ground helps crews work
Large fields also create relatively open areas where engines, water tenders and other resources may maneuver or stage. That operational value is different from a field physically extinguishing flames, but it can give firefighters safer positions from which to build or defend a line. Access is not automatic: roads, gates, terrain and the condition of the crop still determine whether a parcel is usable.

Where the signal was strongest
The buffering association was amplified where irrigation overlapped the fire season, including California’s Central Valley, Washington’s Columbia Basin and Idaho’s Snake River Plain. In those regions, the timing of water application may matter as much as the existence of farmland on a map.
What replaces the fields matters
When cropland is retired, the replacement is not always a low-risk, nonflammable surface. The study reports that much of the remaining converted area became scrubland or other low vegetation that can be more flammable than irrigated crops. A parcel may therefore save water while becoming a more continuous fuel bed between wildland and communities.

Development creates a different exposure. The study estimates that roughly one-fifth of converted cropland became communities. Buildings, vehicles, utilities and everyday activity can add ignition sources and place more people in the path of a fire. Development can also fragment open staging space, even when individual lots contain defensible landscaping.
Drought adaptation and fire planning are now linked
Water managers often consider farmland retirement, fallowing or other conservation measures when groundwater and surface supplies are stressed. Fire managers, meanwhile, look for breaks in fuel continuity and locations where crews can operate. Treating those decisions separately can shift risk from one hazard to another.

Beatrice Gordon summarized the broader problem in the study’s release: “It’s a reminder that out here in the West, we don’t have the luxury of thinking of just one hazard anymore.” The recommended approach is joint water-and-wildfire planning: estimate the water benefit of a transition, then test how the resulting vegetation, development pattern and access would change fire behavior and response.
How to evaluate a proposed land transition
No single alternative is best in every valley. Agencies can use the following questions before approving a retirement, redevelopment or habitat conversion.
Best Value
| Decision axis | Questions to answer | Why it changes wildfire risk |
|---|---|---|
| Water saved | How much irrigation demand is removed, in which year types, and for how long? | A large water benefit may justify a transition, but it should be weighed against the fire consequences rather than treated as a standalone gain. |
| Resulting vegetation | Will the parcel become scrub, grass, forest, bare ground or a managed crop, and how will fuels change through the fire season? | Low vegetation is not automatically low fuel; unmanaged growth can reconnect fire pathways. |
| Perimeter proximity and connectivity | Does the parcel touch recent fire perimeters or form a narrow link between larger fuel blocks? | A strategically located field may matter more than a larger but isolated tract. |
| Development and ignition potential | Could housing, roads, utilities or industrial activity follow the conversion? | New human activity can increase ignition opportunities and the number of structures exposed. |
| Firefighter access and staging | Are there all-weather roads, turnarounds, water points and open areas that crews can legally use? | Operational access can determine whether a theoretical break is usable during a fast-moving fire. |
| Reversibility and governance | Can the land be returned to a lower-fuel use, and who will maintain it? | Permanent conversion and short-term fallowing have different long-term risk profiles; unmanaged parcels can accumulate fuels. |
The finding sits inside a worsening fire environment
Cropland is only one component of a larger social-ecological system. A 2023 PNAS Nexus analysis reported a 246% increase in West-wide wildfire structure loss when comparing 1999–2009 with 2010–2020, with a 160% higher structure-loss rate in the later decade. It attributed 76% of structure loss to unplanned human-related ignitions. A 2023 USDA Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission report described an eight-fold increase in high-severity wildfire in Western U.S. forests since the mid-1980s.
USGS work also shows that severe fire and a changing climate can convert forests to other vegetation when seed sources, post-fire conditions or repeated burning limit recovery. Those changes affect the fuels surrounding farms as well as the farms themselves. Preserving or losing a field cannot substitute for ignition prevention, fuel treatment, resilient buildings, evacuation routes or emergency planning.
What planners and communities can do
- Map fire and water decisions together. Overlay proposed cropland transitions with historical perimeters, current fuels, irrigation-season timing and community boundaries.
- Protect strategically located fields where feasible. Parcels that repeatedly sit between wildland fuels and populated areas may provide disproportionate response value.
- Set a post-conversion fuel plan. If irrigation stops, specify who will control scrub or grass growth, how often it will be treated and how crews will access it.
- Review development proposals for ignition and staging effects. Account for roads, utilities, structure density and the loss of open operating space, not just the acreage converted.
- Track outcomes over time. Water savings, vegetation condition, fire perimeters and firefighter use of open areas should be monitored after a transition rather than assumed from the original plan.
- Consider conservation incentives that recognize fire value. The Desert Research Institute release suggests expanding the USDA Conservation Reserve Program to include fire-buffering value alongside existing criteria. Eligibility and implementation details would need to be established by the responsible agencies.
Limits of the evidence
The study covers 11 Western states and four decades of fire perimeters, making it a broad regional assessment rather than a parcel-by-parcel experiment. Perimeter association cannot isolate every influence of wind, suppression, topography, crop management or chance. Irrigated cropland may be protective in one season and less so after harvest or when water deliveries are curtailed. Barren land’s comparable performance also does not mean that creating barren ground is automatically desirable or practical.

The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: in parts of the American West, losing irrigated cropland can remove a landscape feature that often coincides with where fires stop and where firefighters can operate. Whether that loss is acceptable depends on the water gained, the fuels and development that replace it, and the ability to govern the new land use.
