Connect a Wi-Fi thermostat if you want to adjust your heating or cooling remotely, manage settings in an app, or use connected scheduling and energy-information features. The connection itself does not guarantee lower bills: savings depend on the thermostat’s functions and whether its settings fit your household.
What Wi-Fi adds to a thermostat
Remote temperature control
The clearest benefit is being able to change your home’s heating or cooling when you are away. ENERGY STAR describes Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats as allowing remote control through a smartphone, and its buying guidance says adjustments can be made from anywhere with an internet connection. The exact app, account requirements, and supported devices depend on the model. ENERGY STAR’s smart thermostat guidance

Schedules and automation
Many smart thermostats let you set schedules; some learn preferences or use geofencing to adjust temperatures based on whether residents are home. These features can make it easier to reduce heating or cooling when it is not needed, but only if the resulting schedule suits your routine and comfort needs. Check which functions the model actually supports.

Depending on the product, an app may show temperature or equipment-use information and the thermostat may receive periodic software updates. The data and update arrangements vary by provider; Wi-Fi alone does not mean every thermostat offers the same reports or features.

Does connecting it save money?
It can help make energy-saving settings easier to use, but connecting a thermostat to Wi-Fi is not itself a savings measure. ENERGY STAR says its certified smart thermostats are independently certified using actual field data to deliver energy savings. The certification process described by ENERGY STAR uses a full year of anonymized, aggregated real-world customer data. That category-level finding is not a promise of a particular bill reduction for your home. ENERGY STAR smart thermostat guidance and ENERGY STAR certification information
ENERGY STAR says heating and cooling account for almost half of the annual energy bill for the average American household, and describes that amount as more than $900 a year. The page does not state a year for those estimates, so treat them as broad context rather than a current estimate for every household.

What happens if the internet connection fails?
ENERGY STAR’s certification criteria require certified models to “Work as a basic thermostat in absence of connectivity to the service provider.” That is a limited offline assurance: basic thermostat operation should remain available on a certified model, but app control, remote access, smart-home integrations, and other cloud-dependent services may not work without the relevant connection. Wi-Fi coverage matters where the thermostat is installed. ENERGY STAR recommends keeping a Wi-Fi thermostat reasonably close to the router and notes that a range extender may help if distance causes periodic disconnections. A weak signal can interrupt connected features even if basic temperature control continues.

Utility programs and privacy
Utility programs are optional arrangements
ENERGY STAR says certified thermostats can work with utility programs intended to help prevent brownouts and blackouts, while allowing residents to override grid requests. Participation may require enrollment and comes with separate program terms; a Wi-Fi connection does not automatically enroll you or qualify you for a rebate. Check eligibility and terms with your local utility or the relevant program.
Review who handles your data
A connected thermostat may require a provider account and involve data handling by the provider. ENERGY STAR advises customers to ask their thermostat provider about privacy and security. Its FAQ says the federal government does not receive personally identifiable information or individual usage data from users of ENERGY STAR-certified thermostats; that statement does not mean the manufacturer or service provider receives no data. Review the provider’s current policy and any optional utility or other data-sharing terms. ENERGY STAR FAQ

Check these things before buying or connecting
- HVAC compatibility: Consult the thermostat maker’s compatibility guide for your heating and cooling equipment, including any proprietary or advanced features. ENERGY STAR notes that very high-efficiency equipment may be best paired with a controller from the same company.
- Power requirements: Many smart thermostats need a consistent power supply. ENERGY STAR says most, but not all, use a C-wire. If your setup lacks one, model choices may be limited or an adapter may be needed; confirm requirements for the exact thermostat and installation.
- Signal at the thermostat: Check Wi-Fi coverage at the installation location, not just near the router. A range extender may help if the connection is unreliable.
- Useful features and data terms: Compare the app, scheduling behavior, learning or geofencing features, sensors, integrations, software support, and privacy controls rather than assuming all Wi-Fi models work alike.
- Certification and local incentives: If independently evaluated energy performance matters to you, look for ENERGY STAR certification. Rebates depend on location and program rules; check the official ENERGY STAR rebate finder or ask your utility about current eligibility.
When connecting makes sense
Wi-Fi is most useful if you expect to change temperatures away from home, want app-managed schedules, or will use connected information or automation. If you only need local temperature control, the connected features may not justify setting up an account and network access. Before deciding, make sure the thermostat fits your HVAC system and power setup, the signal reaches its location, and you are comfortable with the provider’s data terms.
