That family is widely used, but available evidence does not establish which individual generation—such as Wi-Fi 5, 6, or 7—is used by the most active devices today.
What is the most used Wi-Fi protocol?
The clearest answer is IEEE 802.11: Wi-Fi is based on this family of standards for wireless local-area networks (WLANs). IEEE describes the family as one of the world’s most widely used wireless computer networking protocols. That describes Wi-Fi broadly, not the market share of a particular generation. IEEE’s Wi-Fi overview explains the relationship between Wi-Fi and the 802.11 series.

There is not enough comparable, current worldwide data here to say whether Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, or Wi-Fi 7 has the most active devices. A standard’s publication date identifies its status as a standard, not how many devices use it.
What do IEEE 802.11 and Wi-Fi generation names mean?
IEEE 802.11 is a standards family, not one single protocol version. Its formal documents specify wireless LAN functions, including medium access control (MAC) and physical-layer (PHY) behavior. Wi-Fi generation names are simpler labels for generations of technology; the corresponding IEEE documents use identifiers such as 802.11be.

The first IEEE 802.11 standard appeared in 1997. IEEE says it supported wireless data transmission of up to 2 Mbit/s over unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum. IEEE’s history of 802.11 gives that early context.
What is the current IEEE 802.11 standard?
IEEE lists IEEE 802.11-2024 as an active consolidated standard. It supersedes IEEE 802.11-2020 and incorporates amendments published through 2024. The IEEE working group lists its publication date as April 28, 2025. This consolidated standard is not itself a claim that every Wi-Fi device uses the newest generation.

How does Wi-Fi 7 fit into the standards family?
IEEE associates Wi-Fi 7 with IEEE 802.11be-2024. The working group’s listing gives July 22, 2025, as the standard’s publication date. That establishes the standard’s publication status; it does not show that Wi-Fi 7 is more prevalent than earlier generations.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does the newest router make every device use the newest Wi-Fi generation?
No. A wireless network’s practical capabilities depend on the access point and the client device communicating with it. A newer router does not make an older phone, laptop, or other client support a generation it was not built to use. A router’s standard therefore cannot serve as a count of the generations used by devices on the network.

Why is “most used” difficult to answer by generation?
A reliable comparison needs a defined measure and comparable data—for example, active client devices counted over the same period and geography. Shipment totals, devices supported by a router, and the publication of a standard measure different things; none alone proves which generation is used by the most active devices worldwide. Without a current, comparable generation-by-generation dataset, a specific winner cannot be named responsibly.
