A Wi‑Fi 7 router can be working normally even when a speed test falls well below its advertised maximum. First separate the internet connection from the wireless link: run the same test over Ethernet, then compare the client’s Wi‑Fi capability, connected band, distance, obstacles, channel conditions, software and service plan. If Ethernet is also slow, investigate the modem, plan or ISP. If Ethernet is fast but Wi‑Fi is slow, the bottleneck is on the wireless path.
Do not buy another router until you have made those comparisons. A router cannot give a Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 device Wi‑Fi 7 features, and a 6 GHz connection can lose speed quickly through walls or at longer distances.

Start with the result that identifies the bottleneck
Run a speed test with one client, then classify the result before changing settings. Use the same test service, browser or app, server choice, and device for every comparison. Record download speed, upload speed, latency, connected band and the approximate distance from the router.

| Comparison | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet and Wi‑Fi are both slow | The wireless link is probably not the only problem. | Check the modem, service plan, router-to-modem link and ISP service. |
| Ethernet is near the plan rate, Wi‑Fi is slow everywhere | The client, router configuration, driver or radio environment is limiting Wi‑Fi. | Verify client capability, band, drivers, channels and channel width. |
| Wi‑Fi is fast beside the router but slow in the normal room | Distance, walls, floor construction or interference is reducing the link. | Improve placement, test another band and measure the actual room where you use the device. |
| One device is slow while others are normal | The slow client is the likely constraint. | Check its adapter generation, operating system, drivers, antenna layout and power settings. |
| Performance collapses when several devices are active | Available airtime or internet capacity is being shared. | Repeat with other traffic paused and inspect which devices are consuming bandwidth. |
These are diagnostic comparisons, not promises of a particular speed. A result can change with the device, distance, frequency band, physical barriers and concurrent traffic.

Why a Wi‑Fi 7 “maximum” is not a speed-test promise
Router packaging usually combines the theoretical capacities of several radios. A client must support the relevant Wi‑Fi 7 features, and the actual transfer is then limited by the client’s stream count, channel width, modulation, signal quality, protocol overhead, distance, interference and the internet connection itself.
Intel describes a 2×2 Wi‑Fi 7 client figure of 5.76 Gbps as a theoretical maximum under assumptions including 320 MHz channels, 4096 QAM and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). Intel also gives an estimated 5.19 Gbps over the air for a 2×2 client using a stated 90% efficiency assumption in the exclusive 6 GHz band. Those figures are engineering estimates, not normal household speed-test results. A speed test also cannot exceed the capacity of the ISP service or the test server.
Intel’s Wi‑Fi 7 infographic presents 320 MHz bandwidth and 4K QAM as draft-specification assumptions behind a greater-than-5-Gbps figure. Treat that number as a qualified capability reference, not a measurement of your particular router, client or network.
Establish a repeatable baseline
Make the first measurements before changing channels, widths or firmware. A controlled baseline prevents a setting change from being mistaken for an improvement caused by a different test location or a quieter network.
- Choose one test client. A laptop is useful because it can usually connect by Ethernet as well as Wi‑Fi. Keep its power source, browser or test app and location consistent.
- Test near the router. Stand or place the client a short distance away with a clear path, and note whether it connects on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz.
- Test at the normal use location. Repeat from the room where performance matters. Record walls, floors, doors and large appliances between the client and router.
- Pause unusual traffic. Stop cloud backups, game downloads, video uploads and other large transfers. If you want to measure a busy-network case, run a second set with those devices active and label it accordingly.
- Run several tests. Take at least three readings in each location rather than relying on one result. Use the median or a typical value, and note large swings rather than hiding them in an average.
- Record the connection details. Capture the band, negotiated link rate if the operating system shows it, signal indicator, channel and channel width. A high negotiated rate does not guarantee equal application throughput, but the details reveal whether the client is on the expected radio.
Use Ethernet to separate Wi‑Fi from the internet service
Connect the same computer directly to a LAN port on the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. If your layout permits, a second test directly from the modem or gateway can distinguish a router LAN issue from an upstream service issue. A suitable Cat 6 cable is enough for this diagnostic comparison when you do not already have one. It is not a Wi‑Fi upgrade and does not guarantee a faster wireless connection.

When wired speed is healthy
If Ethernet is close to the speed included in your plan while Wi‑Fi is not, concentrate on the client and radio path: capability, band selection, distance, obstacles, congestion, channel width, drivers and router settings.
When wired speed is also low
Do not spend time forcing a wider wireless channel. Confirm the subscribed rate, check the modem or gateway indicators, verify the Ethernet port negotiated at the expected rate and contact the ISP if the wired result remains below the service level. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance uses this wired-versus-wireless distinction because working internet over Ethernet points toward a Wi‑Fi or router-connectivity problem, while low results on both paths point upstream.
Confirm that the client can use Wi‑Fi 7
A Wi‑Fi 7 router does not upgrade an older adapter. A Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 laptop may connect successfully but will negotiate only the features it supports. Check the exact wireless adapter model in the computer or phone specifications, not merely the product name of the router.
Check operating-system and driver support
Install the current wireless driver supplied for the client and verify that the operating system supports the intended features. For the Intel products covered by Intel’s compatibility guidance, Wi‑Fi 7 functionality requires a compatible router and Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. That is an Intel-specific requirement, not a universal rule for every platform.
Check the conditions for 6 GHz
On Intel Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 7 products, 6 GHz use also depends on a compatible router, supported operating system and driver, enablement by the computer manufacturer and the rules in your country. A missing 6 GHz network may therefore be a compatibility or regulatory condition rather than a defective router. Do not assume that a 6 GHz-capable radio can use every channel in every region.

Check which band the client is actually using
Many routers use one network name for several bands. The client may remain on 2.4 GHz for range even when 5 GHz or 6 GHz is available. Inspect the connection details on the device or in the router’s client list.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Band | Typical strength | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Longest reach and better wall penetration | Usually slower and more exposed to congestion from nearby networks and household devices. |
| 5 GHz | Faster than 2.4 GHz at suitable range | Shorter reach and more attenuation through walls than 2.4 GHz. |
| 6 GHz | Very high performance close to the router | Shortest practical reach of these bands in many homes and weaker performance through walls; availability varies by device, driver, manufacturer and local regulation. |
Test each available band from the same location. A lower 6 GHz result in a distant bedroom does not show that the router is slow; it may show that the band’s shorter range makes 5 GHz the better choice there. Conversely, a fast result beside the router can be normal for 6 GHz and should not be extrapolated to the whole home.
Improve placement before changing advanced settings
Place the router as centrally and openly as practical, elevated rather than enclosed in a cabinet. Avoid corners, metal furniture, dense masonry, large appliances and locations immediately beside other radio equipment. Keep the antennas in the orientation recommended by the manufacturer.
Run the near-router and normal-location tests again after moving the router. If the near result remains good but the distant result improves substantially, placement and propagation—not the internet plan—were the limiting factors. If neither location changes, continue with client and channel checks.
Check congestion, channel selection and channel width
Nearby networks compete for airtime. Router auto-channel selection can choose a busy channel, and a channel that looked clear at one time can become crowded later. Use the router’s channel or wireless-environment view, if available, and compare the channel with nearby networks.

Understand the width trade-off
Wider channels can carry more data when the spectrum is clean. They also occupy more neighboring spectrum, are more vulnerable to nearby-channel interference and can have less usable signal strength at the edge of coverage. A narrower, cleaner channel may deliver a steadier connection than a wider channel repeatedly retransmitting data.
There is no universal “fastest channel” or width. The useful choice depends on the band, local networks, router firmware, client support and country-specific channel rules. On 6 GHz, the client and regulatory domain must also permit the selected channel.
Change one setting at a time
- Write down the current channel, width, band steering or MLO setting and security mode.
- Change only one variable, such as channel selection or width.
- Save the router configuration and allow all clients to reconnect.
- Repeat the same near-router and normal-location tests under similar network load.
- Keep the change only if throughput and stability improve together. Restore the original value if devices disconnect, latency rises or performance becomes erratic.
This method matters because changing channel, width, band steering and firmware simultaneously makes it impossible to identify the cause.

Install the router’s current stable firmware and the client’s current wireless driver, then reboot the router and test again. Check the router’s release notes for radio, 6 GHz, compatibility or stability changes. Verify that the client has not enabled an aggressive power-saving mode that reduces radio performance during testing.
If a device cannot see 6 GHz or repeatedly falls back to another band, confirm the operating-system version, driver, manufacturer enablement and regional rules before treating it as a hardware failure. For Intel hardware covered by its support guidance, Windows 11 24H2 or later is required for Wi‑Fi 7 functionality.

Account for the service plan and competing traffic
Compare the wired result with the plan’s stated rate for the correct service tier and region. Internet speed tests measure the path to a test server, not the router’s maximum local link rate. A plan below the router’s wireless capability will naturally cap an internet download.
Then repeat the test while checking the router’s traffic or client list. A television streaming several high-resolution videos, a game console downloading an update, a cloud backup or another user’s upload can consume capacity. If the wired result drops only when those devices are active, the router may be sharing a limited service connection rather than failing to deliver Wi‑Fi 7 performance.
Use a symptom-based diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Only one older phone or laptop is slow | Client adapter or driver limit | Adapter generation, driver, operating system and negotiated band. |
| All devices are slow, including Ethernet | Modem, plan, ISP or router-to-modem path | Wired speed, port negotiation, service status and modem logs. |
| 6 GHz is fast beside the router but unusable through a wall | Shorter range and weaker wall penetration | 5 GHz at the same location, router placement and obstacles. |
| Speed varies sharply from test to test | Congestion, interference or active background traffic | Other clients, nearby networks, channel choice and time of day. |
| Wider channel improves peak speed but causes dropouts | Interference or weak edge-of-coverage signal | Use a narrower width and compare stability, latency and throughput. |
| Device never offers Wi‑Fi 7 or 6 GHz | Unsupported client, driver, manufacturer setting or regional rule | Exact adapter model, operating-system version, driver and country rules. |
When replacing hardware is justified
Consider a different access point, an additional access point connected by Ethernet or a mesh arrangement only after the measurements identify a coverage or capacity problem. Replacement is reasonable when a supported client remains slow at short range on a clean, correctly configured band, the router’s firmware is current and Ethernet confirms that the internet service is healthy. It is also reasonable when the router lacks the required LAN port speed for your service or cannot provide stable coverage where you need it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A new router is not a universal fix for an older client, a congested neighborhood, a low service tier, thick walls or an ISP fault. In a distant room, improving wired backhaul or access-point placement can address the actual limitation more effectively than buying a model with a higher theoretical radio total.
Quick Recap
A practical final checklist
- Run repeated tests near the router and at the normal use location.
- Compare the same client over Ethernet and Wi‑Fi.
- Write down the connected band, channel and width.
- Confirm the client supports the Wi‑Fi features you expect.
- For Intel Wi‑Fi 7 products, verify a compatible router and Windows 11 24H2 or later; check driver, manufacturer and regional requirements for 6 GHz.
- Test 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz from the same location where available.
- Improve open, central placement and retest before tuning advanced options.
- Check congestion and change only one channel or width setting at a time.
- Update router firmware and client drivers.
- Compare wired speed with the ISP plan and contact the ISP if Ethernet is also slow.
