Start with the exact message in YouTube Studio
Do not treat every failed upload as the same problem. YouTube’s help pages name specific messages, including “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached” and, during phone verification, “this phone number cannot be used for verification.” The wording determines which fix is appropriate.
- Thumbnail control missing or disabled: check feature eligibility and phone verification.
- File rejected: check format, size, dimensions and aspect ratio for the device and content type.
- Shorts has no thumbnail upload option on your phone: use YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Daily custom thumbnail limit reached: stop retrying and wait 24 hours.
- Thumbnail saved but is not visible: allow time for YouTube to update its displays.
- Image or feature restricted: review policy notices and channel standing.
1. Enable custom thumbnails through Feature eligibility
YouTube classifies custom thumbnails as an intermediate feature. The channel must be phone-verified before the custom-thumbnail control becomes available.
Check the channel’s status
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Channel, then Feature eligibility.
- Look for the intermediate-features section and complete phone verification if it is not enabled.
For a channel that is not a Brand Account, only the channel owner can complete phone verification. On a Brand Account, an owner or manager can phone-verify the channel. If you are signed in as an editor or another role, the control may be unavailable even when the channel itself is eligible.

When verification itself fails
YouTube can send a verification code by text message or voice call. Some mobile carriers do not support Google verification, so try the other delivery method or an eligible number. If Studio reports that the phone number cannot be used, use a different eligible number rather than repeatedly submitting the same one. YouTube limits a phone number to verification of no more than two channels per year.
2. Make the file acceptable for the upload path
YouTube recommends JPG or PNG files. File-size limits depend on what you are uploading and whether you use a phone or a computer.

The dimensions and aspect ratios are YouTube recommendations, not stated universal rejection rules. They are practical targets: export at the recommended resolution, keep a 16:9 canvas for a regular video and a 9:16 canvas for a Short, then compress until the file is below the limit for your device.
Fast re-export checklist
- Export as JPG or PNG rather than an unusual or animated format.
- Confirm the pixel dimensions, not just the file’s display size.
- Remove unnecessary metadata and lower JPEG quality gradually if the file is too large.
- Keep important text and faces inside the crop; changing the aspect ratio can cut them off.
- Use the desktop limit when uploading from a computer; do not assume a file that fails on mobile will fail on desktop.
3. Use the correct Studio workflow
Regular videos on a computer
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Choose the video.
- In the video details, select Thumbnail, then Upload file.
- Pick the exported JPG or PNG and select Save.
Regular videos on iOS or Android
The YouTube Studio app provides a custom-thumbnail route for regular videos. If the option is missing, return to Feature eligibility first; an app update cannot substitute for channel verification.
Shorts
YouTube currently provides custom Shorts-thumbnail uploads in Studio on a computer. If you are looking in the YouTube or Studio phone app and cannot find an upload control, switch to desktop Studio rather than troubleshooting the image itself.
4. Rule out a daily limit
When Studio displays “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” YouTube’s instruction is to try again in 24 hours. The limit can vary by country or region and by channel history, and YouTube does not publish one universal number on the cited help page. Repeated attempts during the waiting period will not reset the limit.

This is different from a file error: a smaller image or a different browser will not resolve a daily quota message. Wait the full period, then upload once through the normal Studio path.
5. Check policy restrictions and channel standing
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube specifically identifies nudity or sexually provocative material, hate speech, violence and harmful or dangerous content as grounds for rejection or a strike. A strike can affect feature eligibility or upload limits.

- Review the thumbnail for prohibited imagery, suggestive nudity, hateful symbols or instructions that promote dangerous acts.
- Open your channel notices and the email associated with the channel for a strike or removal notice.
- In YouTube Studio, check the channel settings and policy area for restrictions before trying another upload.
If the image is rejected for policy reasons, changing its file extension or compressing it will not help. Create a compliant design and follow the appeal or warning instructions shown in the notice.
6. When the thumbnail saved but viewers still see the old image
A successful save does not guarantee immediate propagation to every YouTube surface. Allow time for the new thumbnail to appear before concluding that the upload failed. Check the video details again to confirm that the new image is selected.
Vertical-video display exception
For vertical videos, YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom image with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. This is a display rule, not proof that the upload was rejected.

Troubleshooting branches
The custom-thumbnail button is absent
Open Feature eligibility and complete phone verification. Confirm that you are the channel owner, or—on a Brand Account—an owner or manager. If intermediate features remain unavailable, sign out of other Google accounts and reopen the correct channel in Studio.
The verification code never arrives
Try voice delivery if text fails, or text if voice fails. Carrier support varies. If YouTube refuses the number, use another eligible number within YouTube’s channel-verification limits.
The file is rejected immediately
Re-export as JPG or PNG, verify the device-specific size limit, and use the recommended canvas. A mobile video upload must be 2 MB or less; desktop video and desktop Shorts uploads can be up to 50 MB. Mobile podcast artwork has a 10 MB limit.
A Short cannot accept my phone image
Move to YouTube Studio on a computer. Shorts custom-thumbnail uploads are currently a desktop Studio workflow.
The daily-limit warning persists
Wait 24 hours from the warning, then try again. The applicable limit varies by region and channel history, and YouTube does not state a single global quota.

The image violates a guideline
Read the policy notice, replace the offending design and check channel standing. A strike may remove access to features or reduce upload limits; follow the appeal instructions in the notice rather than creating repeated upload attempts.

Allow propagation time and check the video details. For vertical videos, remember that Home, Explore and Subscriptions may show an automatic 4:5 crop while other surfaces retain the custom image.
A reliable order for fixing the problem
- Copy the exact Studio error message.
- Check Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility and complete phone verification if required.
- Identify whether the upload is a regular video, Short or podcast and whether you are on mobile or desktop.
- Re-export a JPG or PNG within the applicable size limit and use the recommended aspect ratio.
- For a Short, switch to desktop Studio.
- If the message names a daily limit, wait 24 hours.
- If YouTube cites policy or a strike, resolve the notice before uploading again.
- After a successful save, allow time for the image to appear across YouTube surfaces.

Are YouTube’s recommended thumbnail dimensions strict rejection rules?
No. YouTube presents 3,840 × 2,160 for regular videos and 2,160 × 3,840 for Shorts as recommendations, alongside minimum dimensions. The hard checks you must satisfy are the applicable file and upload-path limits; matching the recommendations avoids avoidable cropping and quality problems.
Can I verify several channels with the same phone number?
