YouTube’s first recommendation for an encoder startup error is to get a new key and update the encoder. A key and a server URL are separate settings, so check both.
What “invalid stream key” means
YouTube supplies a stream key for an encoder to use when sending a feed to YouTube. It is distinct from the stream URL (also called the server setting): the key identifies the stream connection, while the URL tells the encoder where to send the feed. YouTube describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
The message does not, by itself, establish that OBS is defective or that your internet connection is the cause. YouTube’s published guidance does not provide an OBS-version-specific cause list or guarantee that resetting the key will solve every case.
Replace the saved key with the current one
- Open the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio. Go to Go Live / Live Control Room and select the stream you plan to send from OBS. In the stream settings, copy the key shown for that stream. Don’t assume a value saved in OBS is still current. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Update OBS. Open OBS’s streaming connection settings and replace the saved stream key with the one you just copied. The exact layout can vary by OBS version and connection method; use the stream or service settings where OBS stores its YouTube connection.
- Check the server setting if you configured a custom server. If OBS is not using YouTube as a selectable service, put YouTube’s stream URL in the server field and the copied key in the separate stream-key field. Don’t paste the URL into the key field, or the key into the server field. YouTube documents these as separate encoder settings. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Start the encoder again. YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions specifically advise retrieving a key in Live Control Room, updating the third-party encoder, and then starting it. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
If you reset the key, replace it in OBS too
If the key may have been reset or is no longer usable, reset it in Live Control Room, then copy the newly generated key into OBS before trying again. A reset does not update OBS’s saved value automatically. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Its help page gives a potentially compromised key as an example reason to reset one. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Check which connection method OBS is using
Manual stream key
If you entered a stream key in OBS, troubleshoot the selected YouTube stream, the current key, and—if you use a custom server configuration—the stream URL. Previous stream settings can load again, including an old key, so replacing what OBS saved is important. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Account sign-in or integration
If OBS or another third-party encoder signs into YouTube and manages the connection without a manually entered key, changing a manual key may not address the problem. YouTube’s advice for this mode is to contact the software’s support team; the software may need an update to work with YouTube Live. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream

If the key and server are correct but the error persists
- Update OBS. YouTube recommends using current encoder software as a general troubleshooting step. Its guidance does not say that a particular OBS version causes this specific key error. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
- Confirm you selected the intended stream and key. A key copied for a different broadcast may not be the one you mean to use. For vertical and horizontal versions, YouTube says to check that each format is sent to its corresponding key. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Check channel livestream eligibility. YouTube says livestreaming requires a verified channel and no livestreaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. These are eligibility checks, not established explanations for every invalid-key message. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
