YouTube does not say it automatically ends a livestream at 12 hours. Its 12-hour guidance is about whether YouTube captures an archive and whether viewers can rewind—not a fixed broadcast cutoff. If your live feed actually stops, check the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room and your encoder or streaming setup instead of treating the archive limit as the cause.
What YouTube’s 12-hour limit actually means
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be archived automatically, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” That is a warning about preserving the replay, not a statement that YouTube ends the live broadcast at hour 12.

The separate DVR guidance says viewers’ ability to rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. DVR affects playback while a stream is live; it does not establish that the encoder connection is cut at 12 hours.

First determine what stopped
“The livestream ended” can describe three different problems. Check which one you experienced before changing settings:
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- The live broadcast ended: The feed is no longer live in YouTube Live Control Room. Investigate the encoder or streaming software and the stream status there. The cited YouTube guidance does not give a universal cause for an individual broadcast stopping at 12 hours.
- The broadcast continued, but there is no replay: This can happen because YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Keep an independent local recording if preserving the full program matters.
- The broadcast continued, but viewers could not rewind: That is consistent with YouTube’s stated DVR limitation for streams longer than 12 hours; it is not evidence by itself that the live feed ended.
If the live feed really stopped, troubleshoot the setup
- Check Live Control Room. Confirm whether YouTube marked the broadcast as ended or whether only the archive or rewind behavior changed.
- Check the encoder or streaming software. Look for a stopped session, connection loss, or an error at the time the broadcast ended. The official pages cited here do not identify one universal 12-hour shutdown cause.
- Check stream status and reconnect. Use the status shown in Live Control Room to distinguish an active broadcast from one that has actually ended. If the encoder stopped, diagnose that software or connection rather than assuming the 12-hour archive rule caused it.
- Record a local backup and verify it is being saved. YouTube recommends a local archive because an extended stream may not be captured on YouTube. Check the recording during the broadcast and make sure the destination has enough available storage for the intended recording.
- Check music rights separately. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on providers to have the necessary rights for live content and archives, including music licensing rights. Confirm that your permissions cover both uses. The terms do not show that a rights issue caused a particular stream to stop at 12 hours.
Plan for the replay and the live feed separately
If uninterrupted broadcasting is the priority, monitor the actual live status and the system sending the stream. If keeping a complete recording is the priority, make and check a local recording rather than relying on YouTube to archive a stream longer than 12 hours. These solve different problems: a local recording preserves a copy, but it does not keep a stopped broadcast live.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and does not change YouTube’s archive or DVR behavior. Try StreamNeo’s free first day.
