Use the actual start and end times for the uninterrupted encoder session, not the lecture schedule. YouTube does not specify an official safety buffer or a recommended lecture-session length, so choose a schedule that leaves time for a controlled stop and restart rather than aiming at the threshold.

The cited YouTube guidance does not give one universal explanation for a partial archive under 12 hours. Compare the archive’s visible beginning and end with a local recording, if you have one. A matching gap in both files points you toward the recording or stream workflow; an intact local file with a shorter YouTube archive helps narrow down where to investigate, but neither result alone identifies the cause.

- Compare timelines. Note when the YouTube archive begins and ends, then compare those points with the lecture schedule and local file.
- Check the local file. Confirm it opens, plays through the relevant period, and has no damaged or missing section. YouTube’s Streaming tips advise checking local archive integrity and verifying that the file size is growing during the stream.
- Review encoder events. Check whether the encoder stopped, restarted, lost its connection, or reported an error around the gap.

Protect the next lecture with a local recording
Send the live feed and record a separate copy locally. Before the event, confirm that the recording destination has enough available space and test that the encoder can write to it. During the lecture, check that the file is growing; after the event, verify that it plays through the needed material. A suitable external SSD or hard drive is one option if the recording device lacks enough local storage. A drive can protect a future recording, but it cannot restore footage that was never recorded locally.

DVR is the rewind experience available to viewers while a stream is live. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. That is separate from the post-stream archive warning: a viewer being unable to rewind to the beginning does not by itself explain a partial saved video. YouTube’s DVR on live streams guidance says viewers can still see a recording of the entire stream once it becomes available when DVR is disabled. This does not change the distinct warning about archiving streams exceeding 12 hours.
