1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn Indian VPS location alone does not explain why a YouTube Live stream buffers. First identify where the failure occurs: the encoder may be dropping frames or losing its connection, the VPS may not sustain the outbound upload to YouTube, or viewers may be buffering even though the incoming stream is healthy. Those symptoms point to different fixes, so measure before changing settings.
Identify which part of the stream is buffering
A live broadcast passes through three distinct stages: the encoder produces and sends video, YouTube ingests it, and YouTube delivers playback to viewers. Start by recording what each stage reports rather than treating every stall as a VPS network problem.

- Encoder-side trouble: Look for dropped frames, connection instability, encoder warnings, or an unhealthy local recording. These point toward the source, encoder, server resources, or the connection used to send the stream.
- Ingestion trouble: Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. An unhealthy incoming stream suggests YouTube is not receiving a stable feed.
- Viewer-side buffering: If the preview and incoming stream look healthy but viewers report stalls, investigate playback conditions and latency mode. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering.
YouTube’s guidance covers outbound bandwidth, encoder health, bitrate, and latency; it does not establish that Indian VPS routes are generally problematic. Without the VPS provider and region, stream profile, CPU/load information, health messages, and route measurements, the cause in an individual case remains unconfirmed.
Check the stream profile before changing bitrate
Write down the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, streaming protocol, keyframe interval, and YouTube latency mode. Find these values in your encoder and Live Control Room, then compare the bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for that specific profile. The figures below are YouTube-published H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain them.
#1 Best Overall

| H.264 profile | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
These are examples, not universal targets: resolution, frame rate, and codec all affect the appropriate bitrate. Use YouTube’s full settings guidance for other profiles and for AV1 or H.265 recommendations: YouTube Live encoder settings.
Use the recommended delivery settings
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
These encoder recommendations help standardize delivery; they do not correct an inadequate or unreliable outbound connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the full configuration context.

Measure outbound capacity from the VPS
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate. Measure sustained outbound throughput from the VPS during the period when instability occurs, then compare it with the aggregate bitrate of every stream the server sends. If you send both primary and backup streams, count both. A speed test on your home computer or another client device does not measure the VPS’s outbound route.

Record throughput and stream-health changes during the relevant time window. If performance varies by time of day, or changes when you test a different network or provider route, those observations are useful evidence to give the VPS provider. YouTube does not prescribe a particular third-party test or guarantee a VPS route to its ingest servers.
Separate encoder or server faults from network faults
Review the encoder’s warnings and CPU load while the problem occurs, and inspect a local recording or archive of the same output. A defective local recording points toward the source or encoding process. If the recording is clean but YouTube reports an unhealthy incoming stream, focus next on outbound capacity and connection reliability. This comparison helps avoid changing network settings to fix an encoding fault—or lowering video quality when the route is the actual constraint.

YouTube’s troubleshooting flow advises checking connection strength when encoder output appears healthy. If the connection remains an issue, YouTube’s guidance is: “If you find issues with your Internet connection, contact your Internet service provider to troubleshoot.” See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Compare latency modes if viewers are the ones buffering
Latency mode matters most when the incoming stream appears healthy but viewers experience stalls. Lower latency leaves less time for playback to build a read-ahead buffer. YouTube warns that “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” Its documentation describes most low-latency viewers as under 10 seconds and most ultra-low-latency viewers as under 5 seconds; these are latency descriptions, not buffering guarantees.

If real-time interaction is not essential, test normal latency against the current low- or ultra-low-latency mode. Change only that variable and compare viewer reports and the live preview. A latency change is not a general remedy for encoder-side disconnects. See Manage live stream settings.
Run a controlled test before the next broadcast
- Record the baseline: Note the encoder profile, latency mode, CPU load, outbound throughput, and any encoder or Live Control Room warnings.
- Test ahead of the event: Start a test stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing in advance; see Streaming tips and live stream troubleshooting.
- Change one factor at a time: For encoder symptoms, test the encoder/source or server load. For an unhealthy incoming stream with clean local output, examine outbound capacity and reliability. For viewer-only buffering, compare latency modes.
- Keep the evidence: Save relevant logs and note when the problem occurs. If measurements implicate the route, share them with the VPS provider instead of assuming geography is the cause.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you observe | What to check |
|---|---|
| Encoder reports dropped frames or connection instability | Encoder warnings, CPU load, local recording quality, and sustained outbound throughput from the VPS. |
| Local recording is clean, but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream | Aggregate outbound bitrate, 20% headroom, connection reliability, and any primary or backup stream competing for bandwidth. |
| Live Control Room looks healthy, but viewers report stalls | Latency mode; compare with normal latency when interactivity is not essential. |
| It works at some times but not others | Log throughput and health messages during both good and bad periods; use the measurements when asking the VPS provider to investigate its route or capacity. |
