YouTube comments appear beside the video because comments are built into the video’s watch-page interface. That placement is a layout observation, not proof of a single design reason: YouTube’s official help documentation explains where comments are opened and managed on each device, but it does not state why the desktop player is shown alongside comments. The arrangement can also differ between a computer, phone, smart TV, and game console.
The practical answer is therefore device-dependent. On a computer, comments are part of the watch page and pinned comments can sit at the top. On a phone, you normally expand the comments section. On a smart TV or console, you reach comments through the video’s title, About area, and comments tile.

What “comments beside the video” means
A YouTube comment belongs to an individual video’s watch page. It is not a separate feed that exists independently of the video. When the watch page has enough horizontal space, YouTube can show the player and the comments area in the same overall view, which is why a viewer may describe the comments as being “beside the video.” On narrower screens, the same comments are usually placed behind an expandable section instead.
Replies remain attached to the comment that started the conversation. YouTube Help describes this relationship directly: “Replies to a comment are threaded beneath the original comment so you can follow the conversation.” Opening a parent comment’s replies therefore changes the visible thread, not the video to which the discussion belongs.

There is no documented rule saying that every viewer must see one fixed arrangement. YouTube’s own device instructions describe different paths for computers, mobile devices, smart TVs, and game consoles. Screen size, the app or web interface in use, and the viewer’s account or device context can all affect which part of the watch-page interface is immediately visible. Treat “beside the video” as a description of one presentation, not a universal YouTube layout.

This is why instructions that work on a laptop may appear wrong on a phone or television. They are describing different interfaces for the same watch-page data.
On a computer: comments are part of the watch page
When you watch through a computer browser, YouTube presents comments within the watch-page interface. Depending on the available window width and the current page arrangement, the comments area may sit alongside the player or lower on the page. The important point is that it is associated with the current video rather than being a separate destination.
Finding a pinned comment
YouTube Help describes pinned comments at the top of the watch page on a computer. If a creator has pinned a comment, look at the beginning of the visible comments area before assuming it is missing. A pinned comment can be a creator’s own message or a viewer comment selected by the channel owner.
Following a reply thread
Select the replies beneath a parent comment to open the conversation under that original post. The threaded structure preserves which comment each reply answers, which is especially useful when several discussions are active at once.

Changing the order you see
The watch page can offer Top comments and Newest first choices. YouTube says Most relevant is the default viewer sorting in its comments system, while the channel owner can choose Top or Newest for the watch-page ordering available on the video. A comment near the top is therefore not necessarily the oldest or newest comment.
On mobile: expand the comments section first
On a phone or tablet, the screen is narrower, so comments are commonly collapsed behind a comments section rather than displayed continuously next to the player. Tap or otherwise expand that section to load the visible comments and their replies.

Locating a pinned comment on mobile
A pinned comment may seem absent if the section is still collapsed. Expand the comments area; YouTube’s mobile guidance says that viewers must do this to see a pinned comment. After expansion, the pinned item is presented within the comment list according to the mobile interface.
Why mobile instructions do not match desktop instructions
The underlying comments belong to the same video, but the control used to reveal them is different. Searching for a side panel on a phone can waste time because the mobile interface prioritizes the player and places the discussion behind an expandable control.
On smart TVs and game consoles: use the About route
Television and console interfaces provide a separate comments panel. To reach it, open the video’s title, move to the About section, and choose the comments tile. The panel then lets you select an individual comment and read its replies.

Posting or replying from a TV
Reading comments is distinct from writing them. YouTube notes that posting or replying on a smart TV or game console may require connecting the TV to the YouTube app on a phone. If the television interface does not present a convenient keyboard or sign-in control, use the phone connection flow offered by the app rather than assuming comments are disabled.
Why a TV may not show comments beside the player
The TV and console pathway is not a side-by-side desktop view. Comments open as a panel reached through the title and About area. That is a documented interface difference, not evidence that the video has a different comment set.
Why YouTube puts comments there: what is established and what is not
The official help material establishes the location and controls for comments, but it does not give a universal explanation for why a desktop layout can place them beside the video. It does not say that the arrangement was chosen to increase engagement, preserve viewing context, or achieve another particular business or design objective.
Those explanations may sound plausible, but presenting them as YouTube’s stated reason would go beyond the available documentation. The defensible explanation is narrower: comments are part of the watch-page experience, and each device interface chooses a practical way to expose that experience. A side-by-side view is one of those presentations.
Why comments can appear out of order or disappear
Seeing comments beside a video does not mean you are seeing every comment in chronological order. YouTube’s sorting and enforcement systems affect which items are shown and where they appear.

Sorting choices
- Most relevant: YouTube describes this as the default viewer sorting. The system uses signals to decide which comments are most useful or relevant to show first.
- Top comments: This view draws on multiple signals rather than simply listing comments by posting time.
- Newest first: This option prioritizes recent comments and is the quickest check when an expected comment is not near the top.
Channel owners can choose Top or Newest for the watch-page ordering on their videos. That owner setting and the viewer’s selected sorting option can affect the sequence a person sees.
Moderation and policy enforcement
If a comment is not visible under Top comments, switch to Newest first. If it is still absent, YouTube says the channel may have moderated it, or YouTube may have removed it for a policy violation. Ranking systems can also omit content their systems assess as potentially inappropriate, spam, or impersonation. A missing comment is therefore not automatically a loading failure.

Comment availability is controlled by the video owner and by YouTube’s account and audience restrictions.
- Private videos: Private videos do not support comments.
- Unlisted videos: Unlisted videos can have comments. Being absent from search does not by itself disable the discussion.
- Made for Kids videos: Comments are turned off for videos marked Made for Kids.
- Supervised accounts: Supervised accounts have restrictions on changing comment settings and may encounter a different interaction experience.
These rules explain why two videos viewed on the same device can have different comment interfaces. The layout is only the presentation layer; availability is determined by the video’s status and the viewer or owner restrictions that apply.

For an individual video, the owner can change comment settings in YouTube Studio. The owner selects the video, opens its comment settings, and saves the desired availability or moderation choice. The owner can also manage settings for their own videos in the mobile YouTube app.
Restrictions to check before changing a setting
- A video marked Made for Kids has comments turned off.
- Private videos do not support comments.
- A supervised account can restrict the ability to change comment settings.
If one of these conditions applies, changing a normal comment toggle will not produce the expected result. Check the video’s privacy and audience designation first.
Ordering comments on a creator’s watch page
Owners can select Top or Newest for watch-page ordering. This choice controls the ordering option associated with the video; it does not guarantee that every comment will be displayed, because moderation and policy systems can still remove or suppress content.
Troubleshooting: comments are not showing
- Confirm the device path. On a computer, look within the watch page. On mobile, expand the comments section. On a smart TV or console, open the title, choose About, and select the comments tile.
- Check whether the video permits comments. Private videos cannot receive comments, and Made for Kids videos have comments turned off. An unlisted video can still have comments.
- Reveal pinned content. On mobile, expand the section before looking for a pinned comment. On a computer, inspect the top of the comments area.
- Change the sort order. Switch from Top comments or Most relevant to Newest first and look again.
- Interpret a continued absence correctly. If a comment is missing even in Newest first, it may have been moderated by the channel or removed for a policy violation. Potentially inappropriate, spam, or impersonation content may also be omitted by YouTube’s systems.
- For TV posting problems, connect the phone app. If reading works but posting or replying does not, follow the TV’s prompt to connect with the YouTube app on a phone.
A reliable way to describe the layout
For support instructions or explanations, say that comments are part of the video’s watch page and then name the device-specific path. “Open the comments on the watch page” is accurate for a computer; “expand the comments section” is accurate for mobile; and “open About, then the comments tile” is accurate for a smart TV or console.
