That means a replacement may require the right glass for the vehicle’s camera and sensor setup, installation to the vehicle maker’s procedure, and any specified calibration.
Why is a windshield a safety component?
Automotive glass has two closely connected jobs: provide a clear view and perform as part of a vehicle designed to meet safety requirements. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 205, Glazing Materials, as the primary federal standard for automotive glass. Replacement glazing must meet that standard and be certified by its manufacturer. NHTSA does not approve or certify individual glass products; manufacturers certify their own compliance.

Glass compliance is only one part of the vehicle’s safety framework. Requirements for the vehicle itself address matters such as windshield mounting, roof-crush resistance, and windshield-zone intrusion. NHTSA also describes a federal restriction on knowingly making safety features inoperative after a vehicle’s first sale. These rules establish obligations; they do not guarantee that a particular replacement or repair restores every aspect of a vehicle’s original crash performance.

The windshield also has to preserve visibility. Its placement and condition matter to the driver, while its optical qualities matter to cameras positioned behind it. On vehicles with a windshield-mounted camera, the glass is part of the camera’s view—not merely a barrier in front of it.

How can replacement glass affect an ADAS camera?
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) may use a camera mounted behind the windshield to observe lane markings, vehicles, or other features. The camera needs a suitable optical path. Clarity and freedom from distortion in the relevant viewing area matter; a windshield can fit the opening and still be unsuitable for that camera application.
AAA’s 2023 report on ADAS repair explains that replacement glass not designed for an ADAS application may prevent proper camera calibration. In a February 2025 position statement, General Motors (GM) likewise says glass specifications can vary and may differ from those validated for its ADAS. GM’s statement describes GM’s position and testing practices; it is not evidence that every aftermarket windshield is unsuitable for every vehicle.

For that reason, “OEM or aftermarket?” is not enough to establish compatibility. The practical question is whether the specific glass is specified for the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, and camera or sensor configuration, and whether the installer will follow the applicable service procedure.

Does a windshield replacement require camera recalibration?
There is no single calibration rule or procedure that applies identically to every make and model. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s service instructions for the specific vehicle and work performed. A replacement can change the camera’s position or optical path, so the manufacturer may specify calibration or a camera “learn” procedure.

GM’s February 2025 statement says calibration or learn at a service point is critical for its vehicles when a front-view camera or sensor is removed, reinstalled, or replaced, and when the windshield is removed and replaced. That is GM-specific guidance, not a universal federal mandate. Other manufacturers may specify different triggers, methods, or requirements.
Before authorizing the work, ask the installer to identify the procedure required for your vehicle, say whether it will be performed, and provide documentation of the result. Do not assume that an absence of a warning light proves calibration was completed; ask for the work record.

How should you choose replacement glass and an installer?
Compare the fitment and procedure, not just the label on the glass. The vehicle’s trim and sensor package can affect what is appropriate, and an installer needs to account for any manufacturer-specified calibration.

|---|---|---|
| Vehicle fitment | Is this glass specified for my exact year, model, trim, and camera or sensor configuration? | A windshield that physically fits may not have the required specifications for the vehicle’s ADAS. |
| Optical suitability | Is the glass intended for this camera application and suitable in the camera’s viewing area? | Clarity and distortion can affect the camera’s view and whether calibration can be completed. |
| Compliance | Does the replacement glazing meet FMVSS No. 205, and is the manufacturer certifying compliance? | In the United States, replacement glazing must meet the federal glazing standard; NHTSA does not endorse individual products. |
| Installation and calibration | Which vehicle-specific procedure will you follow, and will any required calibration be documented? | The required work depends on the vehicle maker’s instructions and the work performed. |
OEM glass is not automatically necessary in every case, and “aftermarket” alone does not establish that glass is unsafe. GM says its safety testing uses GM Genuine Parts, including original-equipment glass, and cautions that other specifications may differ from those validated for its ADAS. Treat that as GM’s manufacturer guidance. For any brand, seek confirmation of vehicle-specific suitability and the applicable calibration procedure rather than relying on a broad label or promise.

Can a chip or crack be repaired safely?
NHTSA does not set a universal federal chip-size cutoff or prescribe one repair method for in-service windshields. Its guidance identifies safety considerations instead: whether damage affects the driver’s visibility, may worsen, reduces the windshield’s ability to retain unrestrained occupants, or otherwise affects safety. Those considerations are not a federal rule saying that damage below a particular size is always repairable.
State rules may regulate the condition of vehicles in use, so legal requirements can vary by location. A repair decision should account for where the damage is, its condition, its effect on visibility and safety, and whether the proposed repair is appropriate. If damage is in the driver’s sightline, spreading, or otherwise compromises safe use, have a qualified glass professional assess it promptly. A repair assessment is not a substitute for checking the rules that apply in your state.
What should you know about tint and visibility rules?
A 1990 NHTSA interpretation discusses a 70 percent minimum light-transmittance requirement for glazing areas requisite for driving visibility under the cited federal standard, as well as the federal “make inoperative” rule in the context of aftermarket tint. That is a historical federal interpretation, not a complete statement of current tint law in every state. State vehicle-use requirements can differ; check current rules in your jurisdiction before applying tint or relying on a general percentage.
