Why Your Wi‑Fi Slows Down in the Evening—and How to Fix It

Evening slowdowns usually come from one of three places: congestion on your broadband provider’s network, heavier use inside your home, or a Wi‑Fi link weakened by distance, walls, interference or too many competing devices. The clock is a clue, not a diagnosis. Test the same connection over Wi‑Fi and Ethernet at a consistent evening time, repeat on another device, and compare the results with a quieter period before buying hardware or changing your plan.

What changes after work or school?

Two layers can slow at the same time. Outside your home, your provider’s access network may be busiest during peak hours. Microsoft describes local internet congestion as occurring when many people connect at once, especially after school, while Ofcom says both the time of day and the number of people using your home connection affect speed.

Inside the house, several people may stream video, play online games, join video calls, download files, run cloud backups or install updates simultaneously. Wireless devices also share the same radio airtime. Neighbouring networks, microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, thick walls and distance can reduce the usable rate even when a device shows full signal bars. A busy Wi‑Fi channel and a busy broadband service can therefore look identical in a speed test.

Diagnose the bottleneck before changing anything

1. Record comparable tests

Run a speed test more than once, as Ofcom recommends, because performance varies by day and time. Test once at the time your connection normally slows and once during a quieter period. Write down the time, measured download and upload speeds, latency if shown, the device, and whether it was connected by Wi‑Fi or cable.

2. Compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet

Connect a computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the test. The Federal Communications Commission says a direct Ethernet connection provides the highest speeds and alleviates Wi‑Fi congestion; Ofcom describes wired connections as faster and more reliable.

  • Ethernet is also slow in the evening: the wireless link is not the main limitation. Check the provider’s status information and report a recurring, time-linked fault with your recorded results.
  • Ethernet is fast but Wi‑Fi is slow: investigate radio congestion, router placement, distance, walls, the device’s band and the number of active wireless clients.

3. Test a second device

If only one phone or computer is slow, restart it, close unused applications and install pending operating-system, browser and driver updates. If every device is slow, continue with router and service testing rather than treating one device as the cause.

4. Temporarily remove heavy traffic

Pause large downloads, cloud synchronisation, game updates and unnecessary smart-TV or camera connections, then test again. Ofcom specifically recommends disconnecting unused devices and checking for data-heavy activity. If performance immediately improves, schedule those jobs outside busy periods or limit their bandwidth where your equipment allows it.

5. Check for a service incident

Look at your provider’s service-status page when the slowdown occurs. Keep the test times and wired and wireless results ready when you contact support; a repeated evening pattern is more useful than a single low reading.

Low-cost fixes to try first

Restart the network

Reboot the router and connected networking equipment, wait for the connection to return fully, and retest. This can clear temporary software or radio-state problems, but it cannot add capacity to a congested provider network.

Improve router placement

Move the router to an open, central and elevated position. Keep it away from thick walls, radiators, fish tanks, microwaves, cordless phones and baby monitors. Do not hide it inside a cabinet or place it on the floor; every obstruction reduces the signal available to rooms farther away.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Choose the appropriate band

Use 5 GHz for nearby devices that need high throughput. The FCC says 5 GHz connections are faster but cover a shorter range than 2.4 GHz. Use 2.4 GHz when a device is farther away or must pass through more walls, accepting lower typical rates and potentially more neighbouring interference.

Wire fixed, high-demand equipment

Connect a desktop, television, streaming box or game console by Ethernet when practical. The cable removes that device’s traffic from the shared wireless airtime and gives you a dependable reference for future troubleshooting.

Update every layer

Install current firmware for the router or mesh nodes and updates for phones, computers, televisions, browsers and wireless drivers. Updates can improve compatibility, security and radio performance.

Change channels only when evidence points there

Use the router’s management page or app to see whether it reports channel congestion. Many modern routers select a less crowded channel automatically, so a manual change is not a universal cure. Change it only when the equipment identifies a crowded channel and retest afterward.

When new hardware is justified

Mesh for coverage holes

A Wi‑Fi 6 mesh system is suited to a larger home or rooms where tests show weak coverage or consistently poor wireless performance. Ofcom warns that adding too many mesh boxes can make problems worse, and mesh cannot increase the capacity of an overloaded broadband connection.

A newer router for an old or overloaded network

A Wi‑Fi 6 dual-band router may help when the existing router is old, supports too few simultaneous devices or provides poor coverage. Ofcom says newer routers can support more connected devices and offer better coverage and speeds. Confirm that the model is supported by your provider before replacing supplied equipment.

Extenders and powerline adapters

A range extender can target one coverage dead zone, but Ofcom notes that it can reduce speed. Powerline performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring, so results vary between properties. These are targeted coverage tools, not solutions for an evening slowdown that also appears over Ethernet.

What the Wi‑Fi generations actually promise

Ofcom’s 2024 table lists the following typical maximum speeds. These are standard-level figures, not guaranteed speeds in a household; walls, distance, channel width, client hardware and competing traffic reduce real results.

Wi‑Fi generation IEEE standard Band(s) listed by Ofcom Typical maximum speed
Wi‑Fi 6 802.11ax 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz 600 Mbps+
Wi‑Fi 5 802.11ac 5 GHz 200 Mbps
Wi‑Fi 4 802.11n 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz 100 Mbps
Wi‑Fi 3 802.11g 2.4 GHz 20 Mbps

Choose the remedy that matches the test

What your tests show Most appropriate next step Why
Ethernet and Wi‑Fi are slow at the same evening time Check provider status and discuss service capacity or a fault The slowdown persists after removing the wireless link.
Ethernet is fast; distant rooms are slow Improve placement, then consider a Wi‑Fi 6 mesh system The evidence points to coverage and wall penetration.
Ethernet is fast; one nearby wireless device is slow Use 5 GHz, update or restart that device, and close background traffic The problem is local to a device or its radio connection.
Fixed high-demand devices consume wireless airtime Connect them with Ethernet Wiring removes their traffic from shared Wi‑Fi airtime.
One dead zone needs a limited extension Consider an extender or powerline adapter after checking trade-offs These target coverage, but may reduce speed or depend on wiring.

An ISP upgrade is the service-capacity option; it will not repair poor in-home coverage. Conversely, a new router or mesh system cannot fix provider-wide evening congestion. Let the wired-versus-wireless comparison determine which side to address first.
