A Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 label on your device does not guarantee that a 6 GHz network will appear. The client must support 6 GHz, the router or access point must offer and broadcast it, and your operating system, driver, manufacturer and country must permit it. Check those requirements first; then investigate network naming and signal range.
First, distinguish Wi-Fi 6 from Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 6 devices operate on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices can support 6 GHz. A product advertised simply as Wi-Fi 6 is not necessarily capable of seeing a 6 GHz network. Intel explains the distinction in its Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 band-support guidance.

Both ends must support the band: a 6E/7 client cannot discover 6 GHz if the router or access point does not provide it, or if its 6 GHz radio is disabled. A router labeled Wi-Fi 6 alone does not establish that it has 6 GHz. Check the exact client and router specifications, rather than relying on a general Wi-Fi-generation label.

1. Verify the exact client model and wireless adapter
Look up the specifications for the device’s built-in wireless adapter, not just the computer or phone’s broad marketing description. Confirm explicit 6 GHz support. If you installed an Intel wireless card yourself, Intel says the computer’s manufacturer should validate and approve its 6 GHz compatibility; a card’s capability alone may not mean the whole system enables it. See Intel’s compatibility and 6 GHz support guidance.

2. Confirm the router is broadcasting 6 GHz
Check the router or access point’s specifications and administration app for Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 and an enabled 6 GHz band. Microsoft says a 6 GHz connection requires a router that supports Wi-Fi 6E. If the router only supports Wi-Fi 6, its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks may work normally while no 6 GHz network is available to find. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance describes the band requirements.
3. Check operating-system and driver support for your adapter
Requirements vary by adapter and manufacturer. Intel’s published guidance for its products calls for Windows 11 and current drivers. It lists driver version 22.70.0 or later for Intel Wi-Fi 6E products and 23.10.0 or later for Intel Wi-Fi 7 products. Intel also says Wi-Fi 7 functionality requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and a Wi-Fi 7 router. These are Intel-specific requirements, not universal thresholds for every Windows computer or wireless adapter. Use the PC maker’s validated driver when appropriate, and check the current Intel instructions for enabling 6 GHz.

On Windows, you can check whether the adapter and driver expose the expected Wi-Fi capabilities using Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi capability guidance. If the adapter is unsupported or its driver does not enable 6 GHz, changing the router’s SSID will not make the band appear.
4. Account for your country and device-maker enablement
6 GHz availability is subject to local regulations, and a computer manufacturer may not enable the band on a particular platform. Intel warns that 6 GHz may be prohibited in some countries or disabled by a system maker; Apple likewise says 6 GHz features are not available in every region. Check the support information for your exact device and location. Do not change a regulatory country setting to bypass local restrictions. Intel’s 6 GHz support information and Apple’s guide to Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 networks with Apple devices describe these limits.

5. Review the SSID and band configuration
A router can use one network name (SSID) across bands or different names for each band. The right choice depends on what you are trying to do and the device guidance:
- Apple devices: Apple recommends using one SSID across 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz for best performance and compatibility. If the bands have different names, an Apple device may show limited compatibility and offer to join the corresponding 5 GHz network instead. Follow Apple’s SSID guidance for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7.
- Troubleshooting which band is in use: Microsoft suggests separate SSIDs when you need to identify or select a band. Use this as a diagnostic approach if it suits your router and device; it is not a fix for a client or router that lacks 6 GHz support. See Microsoft’s SSID and band advice.
6. Test close to the access point and compare another device
6 GHz has shorter range and passes through walls less effectively than lower Wi-Fi bands. Stand near the router and check the available networks again. You can also compare with another device known to support 6 GHz. If that device sees the network but yours does not, the difference helps narrow the problem to client capability or configuration; it does not prove a specific cause. Microsoft recommends trying another device as part of its Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

What the result tells you
| What you find | Most relevant next check |
|---|---|
| The client is Wi-Fi 6 only, with no explicit 6 GHz support | The client cannot see 6 GHz; check whether the router’s 2.4 or 5 GHz network is available instead. |
| The client supports 6 GHz, but the router is Wi-Fi 6 only or has 6 GHz disabled | Check router specifications and settings. The access point must provide and broadcast 6 GHz. |
| Both devices support 6 GHz, but one client cannot see it | Check the exact adapter, OS, driver, system-maker enablement and local availability. |
| An Apple device shows limited compatibility or offers a 5 GHz network | Review whether the router uses different SSID names across bands and apply Apple’s guidance. |
| The network appears only near the router or not through walls | Consider 6 GHz’s shorter range and weaker wall penetration when testing placement. |
These checks identify where to look, not a guaranteed diagnosis. The exact cause depends on the client model and operating system, router settings and country.
