A television’s USB socket is not automatically a suitable power supply for every device. Many ports provide only low-current USB power, while a streaming stick may need more current than the port can deliver. Some televisions also remove USB power in standby, causing a stick to reboot whenever the TV starts. The dependable fix for a streaming stick is usually the manufacturer’s supplied cable and wall adapter, not a different TV USB socket.
An external hard drive has a second compatibility requirement: the TV must support USB storage, its file system and intended function, and the port must provide enough power. If it does not, use a drive with its own power supply only when the TV manual says that type of drive is supported.

USB power and HDMI are separate problems
A streaming stick uses HDMI to send the picture and a separate USB cable for electricity. A black screen therefore does not prove that the USB port is underpowered. The TV could simply be on the wrong HDMI input, or the HDMI plug could be loose.

Start by selecting the HDMI input used by the stick and reseating both HDMI ends. If the device has no status light or remains unresponsive, then test its power source. Google’s black-screen guidance also recommends trying another power source when there is no indicator light: Google’s black-screen troubleshooting instructions.

Why the port runs out of power
USB output varies by television model
There is no single output rating for all TV USB sockets. For example, Sony states that the USB port on the specific KDL-55XBR8 supplies “5 volts at 500mA (2.5 W)” as USB 2.0 standard power: Sony’s KDL-55XBR8 support article. That figure applies to that model and should not be treated as a universal limit for televisions.
At 5 volts, 500 mA provides 2.5 watts. A device that needs 1 amp at 5 volts needs up to 5 watts, and one rated at 1.5 amps needs up to 7.5 watts. The port can therefore appear to work during boot and then fail when the stick starts Wi-Fi, video decoding or other higher-load functions.
Streaming-device requirements are model-specific
Roku says that the USB port on some TVs cannot power a Streaming Stick and specifies a 5 V, 1 A adapter for the referenced Streaming Stick setup: Roku setup instructions. Google recommends a 5 V / 1.5 A replacement adapter for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer, and says to use the supplied cable and adapter where possible: Google low-power troubleshooting and Google device specifications.

| Device or port | Published electrical figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Sony KDL-55XBR8 TV USB (model-specific) | 5 V, 500 mA (2.5 W) | USB 2.0 standard power for that television; not a specification for every TV |
| Referenced Roku Streaming Stick setup | 5 V, 1 A | Use the specified adapter when the TV USB port is inadequate |
| Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer | 5 V, 1.5 A | Google’s recommended replacement-adapter rating for those devices |
| Google removable-storage hub arrangement | Charger higher than 1.5 A / 7.5 W | Requirement for Google’s documented powered USB-C hub setup, not a general USB rule |
Standby can interrupt the supply
Some televisions turn their USB output off while switched off or in standby. A stick powered from that socket then has to boot again when the TV wakes. Roku documents this behavior for USB-powered players: Roku’s restart-when-the-TV-turns-on guidance. The behavior is model-dependent, so do not assume that every television cuts power in standby. A wall outlet keeps the stick powered continuously and avoids this particular power-cycle.
Diagnose the fault in the right order
- Identify the symptom. A low-power warning, a flashing red light, repeated restarts or a device that never reaches its home screen points toward inadequate or interrupted power. Roku lists an on-screen low-power or insufficient-power message and a flashing red light as signs of a power problem: Roku low-power support.
- Separate video from power. Confirm the TV’s selected HDMI input and push the HDMI connection firmly into both devices. A wrong input produces a black screen even when the stick is fully powered.
- Remove the TV USB port from the test. Connect the supplied USB cable to the supplied wall adapter and plug that adapter directly into a reliable wall outlet. Google specifically advises reseating both ends and avoiding a USB-C hub or switch between the device and its adapter: Google’s low-power instructions.
- Use the exact cable and rating. For the cited Roku setup, use a 5 V / 1 A adapter; for Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer, use Google’s 5 V / 1.5 A recommendation. Do not transfer either rating to an unrelated stick.
- Test the outlet and connections. Try another known-good wall outlet, then reseat the adapter at the outlet and the USB cable at the device. A loose connector can mimic an underpowered port.
- Check standby behavior. If the stick works from TV USB but reboots after the TV has been off, move it permanently to wall power. This addresses a switched-off TV USB output rather than a defective stick.
- For a drive, check the television manual before changing hardware. Confirm that the exact USB port supports hard drives, which file systems it accepts and whether it supports playback, recording or only photo/music files. Then compare the drive’s stated power requirement with the port’s published output.
Fixing a streaming stick
Roku devices
Roku’s setup documentation warns that “The USB port on some TVs may be unable to power a Streaming Stick.” When that warning or a flashing red light appears, connect the Roku’s supplied USB cable to a wall adapter rather than the TV. The referenced setup calls for a 5 V, 1 A adapter: Roku Streaming Stick setup. Roku’s more recent Streaming Stick 4K setup also directs users to the supplied power arrangement when TV USB power is insufficient: Roku Streaming Stick 4K instructions.
Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer
Google’s support wording is explicit: “If it’s plugged into your TV’s USB port or a different adapter, it might not be getting enough power.” Use the supplied cable and adapter first. If a replacement is necessary, Google recommends 5 V / 1.5 A for the named devices. Plug the adapter directly into a reliable outlet and do not insert a hub, switch or other intermediary between the adapter and the streaming device: Google’s low-power troubleshooting.

Choosing a replacement adapter safely
Match the device model, output voltage, connector and cable, and ensure the adapter can provide at least the device’s specified current. A higher current number alone does not establish compatibility: the voltage, connector dimensions, cable quality and polarity must also be correct. The included adapter remains the least ambiguous choice.
When an external hard drive is involved
Confirm that the TV supports the drive’s job
USB storage support is not guaranteed just because a television has a USB socket. Read the exact TV manual for supported drive types, file systems, capacity limits and whether the port is intended for media playback or recording. A port may power a small flash drive yet be unsuitable for a hard disk.
Compare the drive’s requirement with the TV’s output
A hard drive that needs more power than the port can deliver may fail to spin up, disconnect repeatedly or disappear from the TV’s file browser. Sony states that drives drawing more than the cited KDL-55XBR8 port’s 5 V / 500 mA (2.5 W) require an external supply, while also noting that the television must support HDD use: Sony support. Do not apply that 2.5 W figure to another TV without its own specification.

If you're using a custom USB-C device with a thicker port housing, please contact us for compatibility advice.
An externally powered drive can solve a power deficit only after compatibility is established. It cannot make an unsupported file system, recording mode or drive type work.
Powered hubs are a narrow exception
For removable storage attached to supported Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer setups, Google documents a compatible USB-C hub with power delivery and a charger higher than 1.5 A / 7.5 W: Google’s removable-storage instructions. Google cautions that this method is not intended for general use and is not guaranteed in every configuration. A powered hub is therefore not a universal answer for a TV hard-drive problem or for a streaming stick that is otherwise underpowered.

Compare the practical fixes
| Fix | Best use | Limit or check |
|---|---|---|
| Supplied wall adapter and cable | Streaming stick that shows low power, has a flashing warning light or reboots | Use the rating and connector specified for that exact device |
| Replacement wall adapter | Lost or damaged original adapter | Match voltage, current, connector and cable; do not choose by connector shape alone |
| Externally powered USB hard drive | TV supports HDD use but its USB port cannot supply the drive | Verify file system, intended TV function and drive compatibility first |
| USB-C PD hub with charger | The specific Google removable-storage arrangement | Requires a compatible hub and charger above 1.5 A / 7.5 W; not guaranteed generally |
| A different TV USB socket | Only as a diagnostic test or when the manual gives a suitable rating | Another socket may have the same limit or may also switch off in standby |
Common mistakes that waste time
- Assuming every USB socket supplies 500 mA. The 500 mA figure belongs to Sony’s cited KDL-55XBR8, not to all TVs.
- Using HDMI as a power diagnosis. HDMI carries the picture; it does not replace the streaming stick’s USB supply.
- Buying an adapter solely because the plug fits. Incorrect voltage or wiring can damage equipment, while an apparently larger current rating does not prove the right connector or cable.
- Putting a hub between a Google streaming device and its adapter. Google advises a direct connection for low-power troubleshooting.
- Assuming a powered hub fixes every hard-drive problem. The TV still has to support the drive, file system and intended function.
- Replacing the stick before testing wall power. A direct outlet test distinguishes a power-path problem from a failed device.
A quick decision guide
If the stick displays a low-power message, flashes a red light or loops through reboots, connect its original cable and adapter to a wall outlet. If it then works normally, the TV USB port is inadequate or is being switched off in standby.

If wall power does not help, verify the HDMI input and connection, test another outlet, reseat every connector and confirm that the adapter matches the device specification. A persistent failure after those checks may indicate a damaged cable, adapter or streaming device rather than a TV USB limitation.
If the problem is an external drive, do not begin with a new hub. First read the TV manual, identify the port’s power specification, check the drive’s own requirement and confirm the supported file system and TV function. Only then choose an externally powered drive or the narrowly documented powered-hub arrangement for compatible Google devices.
