Game Mode does not have one universal dim-picture fault. It reduces image processing to help lower input lag, and some TVs handle picture adjustments differently in that mode. Start by checking energy-saving settings and the active picture preset; then determine whether the problem affects all content, only one HDMI input, or HDR alone. Change one setting at a time while the affected game is on screen.
Why Game Mode can change the picture
Game Mode is designed to prioritize responsiveness over some image processing. TCL says its Game Mode reduces processing and input lag; Samsung says the mode prioritizes gaming speed and may involve a slight decline in graphics quality. Neither description means every TV will become dim or washed out: the result depends on the TV, signal, and selected settings. TCL’s settings guide and Samsung’s picture-settings guide describe these trade-offs and controls.

First identify when the picture changes
Compare the affected game with other content, using the same TV input where possible. Note whether the image looks wrong everywhere, only in Game Mode, only when HDR is active, or only in one game. Also check whether the TV’s own menus look normal. This comparison can help narrow the cause, but menus and video from an external device may use different picture paths.

Settings may be stored separately by input or picture mode. Keep the affected input selected while testing, and note any recent changes to the TV, console, connection, or settings. TCL says advanced picture settings can apply to the selected input and may be saved per input and picture mode.

Rule out power-saving settings and the picture preset
Energy-saving controls can reduce light output independently of Game Mode. LG identifies Eco or Auto Power Save picture modes and Energy Saving settings as possible causes of a dim image. On an LG TV, turn Energy Saving Step off and try Standard Picture Mode as a comparison—not as a universal calibration recommendation. LG’s menu path varies by webOS generation, so consult the model-specific instructions rather than assuming one path applies to every set. LG’s dim-picture guide lists version-dependent menu locations.
For another brand, look for an equivalent Eco, energy-saving, or ambient-light control in the TV’s manual. Change one option at a time and check the same scene so you can tell which change matters.

Adjust the control that matches the problem
“Brightness” may mean overall light output or the level of dark areas, depending on the TV’s labels. Raising the wrong control can lift blacks, hide shadow detail, or alter color. Make small adjustments while the game is visible, and record the original values before changing them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Overall screen light: TCL describes TV brightness as affecting the overall picture and Backlight as controlling overall screen light intensity. Samsung also lists Backlight separately from Brightness.
- Black level: TCL’s Brightness control adjusts the dark level of black areas. Samsung lists Brightness and HDMI Black Level as separate controls.
- Other image controls: Contrast, Color, Gamma, and HDMI Black Level are distinct settings, not interchangeable ways to make the whole screen brighter.
Menu names and available controls differ by model and year. See the relevant TCL guide or Samsung guide for the manufacturers’ descriptions.

If the problem happens only with HDR
Confirm that the console and game are actually outputting HDR and that the TV has switched to its HDR picture settings. HDR can look different from SDR, and tone mapping can change perceived brightness.
On supported LG TVs, Game Optimizer offers Tone Mapping Compensation choices. LG says HGiG may look darker than Tone Mapping ON; that difference alone does not establish a fault. HGiG is available only when an HDMI device is connected and Game Optimizer is selected, and support depends on the TV, console, and game. Compare the available options using the same scene, then run the source device’s HDR calibration again according to its own instructions. There is no single tone-mapping choice or calibration procedure that applies to every setup. LG’s HGiG guide explains the feature and its limitations.

If the game device’s HDMI signal features did not activate automatically, check the setting for the port it uses. Samsung calls this setting Input Signal Plus; its availability and menu details vary by model and software. Use Samsung’s Game Mode guide for the relevant input instructions.
Check the HDMI input and connection
- Confirm that the game device is connected to the intended HDMI input and that the cable is fully seated at both ends.
- If the TV requires an enhanced-signal option for the features you are using, enable it for that specific port. Samsung documents Input Signal Plus for the HDMI port carrying the game device.
- Consider another cable only if the current one is loose, damaged, or unsuitable for the signal features you want. LG lists a loose HDMI connection as one possible cause of a dim picture; replacing a cable is not a general fix for Game Mode dimness or washed-out color.
Reset the affected picture settings, then escalate if needed
If several adjustments have accumulated, reset the picture settings for the affected input or mode after recording your custom values. Samsung documents a Reset Picture option, and LG provides picture-reset instructions; the exact menu path varies by model and software. A reset can erase your own adjustments, so use the TV’s model-specific guide. Samsung picture settings and LG dim-picture troubleshooting describe their respective guidance.
If reversible settings and connection checks do not help, contact the manufacturer with the TV model, software version, input, and whether the signal is SDR or HDR. LG advises seeking support if the TV’s own menu is too dark to read or only part of the screen is dark, since those symptoms may indicate an internal issue. Do not open the TV or assume a particular component has failed based only on a dim game image.
